OSAKA—The master pyrotechnicians behind the Omagari fireworks festival, Japan's most prestigious fireworks competition, lit up the night sky with their jaw-dropping creations at the Osaka Kansai Expo here on June 28.
With the theme 'Gunpowder should be used for peace, not war,' the pyrotechnicians embedded the powerful message in their fireworks, sending it out to the world.
The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition announced that the number of expo visitors reached a record-high 177,000 (preliminary figure, excluding 18,000 staff and officials) that day.
The overwhelming drawing power of the Omagari fireworks left an impression both at home and abroad.
The Omagari fireworks festival, known as 'a fireworks display you must see at least once in your lifetime,' is considered the ultimate competition to determine Japan's top fireworks masters.
The competitions are usually held in Daisen, Akita Prefecture. The festival's 100th anniversary event will be held in 2028.
For the upcoming 97th event on Aug. 30 this year, the most expensive seats, 60,000 yen ($420) each, sold out online in just one minute. These seats are regarded as the most difficult fireworks tickets to obtain in Japan.
The fireworks displayed at the expo on June 28 were launched by the Omagari fireworks cooperative association, which is composed of four local companies: Komatsu Fireworks Co., Kita-Nihon Hanabi Co., Wabiya Inc. and Hibikiya Omagari Hanabi Inc.
Seventeen pyrotechnicians traveled more than 12 hours to the expo site in two trucks and two vans.
This is the first time all the leading pyrotechnicians from Omagari have gathered and launched their fireworks in the Kansai region, and a massive crowd filled the venue to see their work.
At 7:48 p.m. on June 28, following a signal flare, a breathtaking five-minute display of around 1,000 top-tier fireworks began.
Four top pyrotechnicians showed off their masterworks in succession.
Tadanobu Komatsu, 61, who won the prime minister's prize at last year's festival, stunned the audience with the highly technical 'Nobori Gin Ryu Goeshin Henka Giku' (Silver Rising Dragon Five-Core Transforming Chrysanthemum), a chrysanthemum-shaped firework that soars to the height of Tokyo Tower.
Yoshikazu Konno, 61, fascinated the audience with his signature 'Happosaki' fireworks, which create an eight-petal blossom effect. The labor ministry named him a contemporary master craftsman in 2024, only the 10th person in the fireworks field to receive this title.
Kazuyuki Kumegawa, 51, nicknamed the 'Wizard of Color,' also amazed spectators. A graduate of Osaka University of Arts, Kumegawa presented the 'Pastel Senrin Chrysanthemum,' a difficult piece requiring masterful color control.
Kentaro Saito, 45, captivated the audience with a multicolor-changing 'gradation' effect, which is also gaining attention overseas.
'It was a great opportunity for visitors from around the world to experience the artistry and impact of Omagari fireworks. We hope many of those visitors will come to see the fireworks in their original setting of Omagari next time,' said Komatsu, who is also the Omagari fireworks cooperative association's chairman.

Ishiba Calls on People to Think about Future at Osaka Expo

Osaka, July 3 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba called on people to think about the future, in a speech at a Japan Day ceremony at the World Exposition in the western city of Osaka on Thursday. "I hope that this day will be a day (for people) to think about the future in which they will walk together with Japan and the path to that hope," said Ishiba, honorary chairperson of the Expo. Crown Prince Akishino, honorary president of the Expo, said in a speech, "I want people who will lead the next generation to experience encounters with people and cultures around the world and deepen their thinking about the world and the future." Following the ceremony, creative performances blending various Japanese cultures, including "gagaku" ceremonial court music and manga, were held. A parade joined by characters such as Sanrio Co.'s Hello Kitty and Kumamoto Prefecture's Kumamon took place under the Grand Ring, the huge wooden structure that is a symbol of the Expo. About 8.9 million people had visited the Expo as of Wednesday since its April 13 opening, according to its organizer, the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition. 2025 Osaka Expo: Akita Pref.'s Omagari Fireworks to be on Display on June 28

Yomiuri Shimbun file photo Pyrotechnic artwork launched during last year's Omagari Fireworks Festival in Daisen, Akita Prefecture. AKITA — Pyrotechnic artworks from the famous Omagari Fireworks Festival in Daisen, Akita Prefecture, will illuminate the night sky over the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo venue on June 28. This will mark the first time that the pyrotechnicians behind one of Japan's three major fireworks festivals will travel to the Kansai region to set off fireworks. 'We want to show people from Japan and abroad the beauty of fireworks,' fireworks specialist Tadanobu Komatsu, 61, said. They will display fireworks as part of the Japan Fireworks Expo, where pyrotechnicians from all over the country will gather to showcase their work at the Kansai Expo. The Omagari Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the organizer of the local fireworks festival, was approached last October about participating in the Expo event. Komatsu and his colleagues readily agreed, calling it 'an honor to shoot off fireworks at the Expo.' Held every August, the Omagari Fireworks Festival attracts 100,000 spectators and involves 28 fireworks companies from Daisen and other regions in Japan. Each display is scored, and the participating companies rotate every five years based on their rankings. Last year, Komatsu Fireworks Co., headed by Komatsu, won the Prime Minister's Prize, the highest honor. 'It's a competition where the best pyrotechnics are brought together, and that's why fireworks at Omagari festival are considered the pinnacle of the art,' Komatsu said. On June 28, the Omagari Hanabi Design Team, comprising of Komatsu Fireworks and three other fireworks companies from Daisen, will shoot off fireworks from the southern embankment of Yumeshima Island in Osaka's Konohana Ward. The team will showcase about 800 fireworks, including the most difficult 'goeshin' firework which consists of six layers of concentric circles spread evenly; 'happosaki,' which shoots light rays in various colors in a circular pattern from the center; and 'senringiku,' which explodes with a countless number of small bursts. Komatsu went to Yumeshima in advance to confirm the launch positions. 'The fireworks of Omagari are still not well known in western Japan. We want to put on a show that will make people want to visit Omagari,' he said. Fireworks at Expo The Japan Fireworks Expo will feature eight fireworks displays during the 2025 Expo. Two displays have been held so far: the Ise Shrine Dedication National Fireworks Display from Mie Prefecture on April 26 and the Futaba Fireworks from Fukushima Prefecture on May 31. The Ise display attracted 104,803 people, and the Futaba display brought a record 169,923, leading the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition to limit the number of spectators allowed to ascend the venue's Grand Roof (Ring) for viewing. The Omagari fireworks display on June 28 is also expected to draw large crowds, so the association will dispatch more security personnel than usual to control the crowds during the event. The June 28 display will be followed by the other famous displays on July 21, Aug. 23, Sep. 27 and Oct. 8, though details have not yet been announced. Fireworks from various regions will be launched jointly on July 23.
