Miramax Secures Remake Rights To Thai Blockbuster ‘How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies'
Miramax has struck a deal for remake rights to Thai film How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, a huge hit across Asia last year, which also became the first Thai movie to be shortlisted for Best International Feature at the Oscars.
The deal for English-language remake rights, struck with the film's director Pat Boonnitipat and Thai powerhouse studio GDH 559, followed an intense bidding war with several other studios. Since its release in April 2024, the comedy drama has become one of the hottest properties out of Asia, grossing more than $55m, including $17m in China.

In the U.S., the film premiered last summer at the New York Asian Film Festival, where it picked up the audience award, and has since earned a 98% Tomatometer score and 95% Popcornmeter rating. Well Go USA gave the original film a theatrical release in North America.
Starring Thai singer and actor Putthipong Assaratanakul (a.k.a. Billkin), the film follows a college dropout who moves in with his ailing grandmother after her cancer diagnosis, hoping to secure her million-dollar inheritance. However, he soon finds she is no pushover and what started as a cynical race to secure her fortune soon transforms into a powerful reminder of family bonds.
The remake deal was negotiated on behalf of GDH by Nelson Mok of Mokster Films, a Singapore-based investment and sales company with a primary focus on Asia-produced content. Yvette Zhuang, Miramax's SVP of International Production and Distribution who is transitioning out of her current role at the end of May, will remain closely involved as a producer on the film.
Miramax said it was confident the film's 'universal appeal and deeply relatable themes' will resonate with A-list talent and audiences globally.
'A masterclass in storytelling, this is the kind of film that reminds us why we make movies,' said Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman. 'How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is a rare gem that manages to be hilarious, surprisingly poignant, and moving all at once. Like the original, we hope our adaptation brings generations of families to the cinema together.'
The film's director Pat Boonnitipat said: 'Its success worldwide surprises me, yet it warms my heart to know that people across the world share this value—or some kind of core—that connects us beyond the identities of countries or cultures.'
Producer Vanridee Pongsittisak said: 'The heart of a family is universal, but each home holds an entirely different story. That's why I'm excited to see How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies come to life once again — this time in an American household.'
Miramax is coming into Cannes with a film slate that also includes the sequel to hit action film The Beekeeper, again starring Jason Statham and this time directed by Indonesia's Timo Tjahjanto; Roofman, starring Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst and Peter Dinklage; and Colman Domingo's directorial debut Scandalous, starring Sydney Sweeney and David Jonsson.

Jury to start deliberating in Harvey Weinstein rape retrial
By Jack Queen and Jody Godoy NEW YORK (Reuters) -Jurors in Harvey Weinstein's rape and sexual assault retrial will begin deliberating on Thursday in a Manhattan court, weighing the credibility of the former movie mogul's three accusers against the defense's efforts to brand them liars. The Academy Award-winning producer and Miramax studio co-founder is accused of raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013 and assaulting two other women in 2006 and 2002. Weinstein, who has denied ever having non-consensual sex or assaulting anyone, has pleaded not guilty. The trial began in April. Weinstein, 73, is on trial for a second time after a New York state appeals court threw out his conviction in April 2024. He faces up to 25 years in prison for two counts of criminal sexual acts and up to four years for one count of rape. He is already serving a 16-year prison sentence after being found guilty in December 2022 of rape in California. Two days of closing arguments wrapped up on Wednesday, and state Supreme Court Justice Curtis Farber will instruct the 12 jurors on the law before handing them the case. Prosecutors with the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg have portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who promised career advancement in Hollywood to women, only to then coax them into private settings where he attacked them. 'He held the golden ticket, the chance to make it or not. He made each of these women feel small, no match for the power broker of Hollywood,' prosecutor Nicole Blumberg told jurors on Wednesday. Weinstein's defense lawyers have said his encounters with the women were consensual and accused them of lying about being raped after failing to make it big in Hollywood by sleeping with him. "They are lying about what happened. Not about everything, but about a small slice - just enough to turn their regret, their buyers' remorse, into criminality," defense lawyer Arthur Aidala told jurors Tuesday. Weinstein was convicted of rape by a Manhattan jury in February 2020, but the New York Court of Appeals threw out the conviction and ordered a new trial, citing errors by the trial judge. Weinstein had been serving a 23-year sentence in a prison in upstate Rome, New York, when the conviction was overturned. That conviction was a milestone for the #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful men. Weinstein has been held at New York City's Rikers Island jail since his conviction was overturned. He has had several health scares while being held at Rikers, and in September was rushed to a hospital for emergency heart surgery. More than 100 women, including famous actresses, have accused Weinstein of misconduct. He has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex. Miramax studio produced many hit movies in its heyday, including "Shakespeare in Love" and "Pulp Fiction." Weinstein's own eponymous film studio filed for bankruptcy in March 2018, five months after the original sexual misconduct accusations became widely publicized.

Nintendo Switch 2 launches in Tokyo drawing hours-long lines
Eager customers lined up outside electronics stores in Tokyo hours in advance to collect their preordered Nintendo Switch 2 video game consoles. The much anticipated Switch 2, being released around the world Thursday, is an upgrade to its eight-year-old predecessor with new social features meant to draw players into online gaming. Nintendo is counting on the Switch 2 to boost sagging sales. In the U.S., a chaotic preorder process in April left some fans frustrated after the consoles quickly sold out. In Japan, the new consoles were sold through a competitive lottery system that Nintendo said got about 2.2 million applications. Outside the official draw, some retailers offered their own lotteries to preorder the devices. Koji Takahashi was among those who missed out on the official draw but he was selected in the second round of a lottery held by a major electronics retailer in Japan. He was first in line waiting outside the store, arriving four hours ahead of its opening. He hoped to secure a limited supply of Nintendo accessories to buy along with his preordered Switch 2. 'I feel very sorry for those who weren't successful in the lottery. But I also had tough time getting this far, so I hope they forgive me!' Takahashi said. The new console comes with a larger and higher resolution screen than its predecessor, with improved processing power, offering smoother and more vivid graphics. Nintendo has said it expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles for the fiscal year through March 2026. The company has promised to roll out attractive software for the Switch 2 later this year, including 'The Legend of Zelda' games, a Pokemon title and a Kirby game, as well as offerings from outside software companies. Nintendo is capitalizing on the launch with the opening of a store in San Francisco and the Super Nintendo World amusement facility in Orlando, Florida, both set for this month. The Switch 2's rollout arrives at an uncertain time for much of the gaming industry due to new tariffs implemented by U.S. President Donald Trump. In the U.S., the Switch 2's baseline launch price is $449.99—significantly higher than the original Switch's $299 price tag. U.S. preorders for the Switch 2 were delayed for several weeks so the company could assess the potential impact of tariffs.

Nintendo's Switch 2 Has the Handheld Market All to Itself
Eight years since the launch of Nintendo Co.'s original Switch, the new console is finally here, in stores Thursday and online Friday. To greet the Switch 2, the return of what I feel is a much-missed staple, there was a frenzied midnight launch. Reports the Guardian: When the first Switch hit the market in 2017, rival console makers paid little attention. Nintendo was the walking wounded, reeling off the back of a highly disappointing Wii U, which sold a mere 13.6 million units, an extreme disappointment after 100 million in sales of the groundbreaking Wii. Its choice to separate from the pack, to not create a traditional home console to compete with Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox and Sony Group Corp.'s PlayStation, was seen as an admission of having fallen behind.
