Winona Ryder Threatened By Director After Reporting Him

Winona Ryder was just 15 years old when she starred in the movie that catapulted her to global stardom: Tim Burton's Beetlejuice, which was released in 1988. While Winona had already been acting for a few years by this point, it was this performance that really put her name on the map, and before long, she was one of the biggest names in Hollywood. And, as you might expect, being a young woman in the acting world during this era wasn't exactly a walk in the park. Speaking to Esquire just last year, Winona revealed that she was sexually harassed throughout her career, and even suggested that it was no coincidence that her decline in the late '90s coincided with the rise of disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein, who is currently serving time in prison for various sexual abuse charges. In fact, Winona claimed that she was 'blacklisted' by Miramax, the company Harvey ran until 2005, for 'various reasons.' Appearing to refer to the fact she'd already been in the industry for several years before Harvey gained prominence, Winona said: 'I think I knew a little bit too much. He did not like me.'And while being shunned by him may have meant that Winona thankfully escaped falling victim to Harvey in other ways, she said that she still endured relentless sexual harassment from other men in the industry.'I had a couple of difficult experiences with a couple of people who were just blatantly sexually harassing me,' she recalled. 'And then it happened again in my thirties. It wasn't an assault. But it was incredibly inappropriate. It was wild.' 'I was lucky because I was known, so it didn't happen as much as maybe it would if I had been a struggling actor,' Winona then acknowledged. 'But I remember this feeling in your mind: you're negotiating, you're thinking about what's going to happen if you say something. You're working it out while this person is being extremely creepy.' Winona also said that she became accustomed to jovially brushing off unwanted advances from men, saying: 'If someone was being inappropriate or drunkenly hitting on me it was like, 'Ha ha!' You kind of do that. 'Ha ha!' Inappropriate? I dealt with that. But touching me? It felt very invasive.'And while Winona doesn't intend on naming any of the men involved, she did open up some more about her troubling on-set experiences in a new interview with Elle. Speaking to the publication, the actor, now 53, revealed that when she was younger, a director threatened her during filming after she reported his problematic behavior toward her to the movie's producers. Winona said that she told the producers the director was being inappropriate, and asked if they could talk to him about it. 'The next day I had a big scene,' she shared, detailing how the director approached her on set to discuss the scene before changing his tone to a whisper. 'He came up to me, and he was like: 'OK, so, um, if we just try it like — you fucking cunt, I'm gonna destroy your fucking life. OK? So let's just do it like that?'' 'And I had to fucking act,' Winona went on. 'And what's so crazy is my brother was working as a PA on the movie, and I didn't even tell him, and I didn't complain.' Even more shockingly, Winona said that she didn't even realize just how messed up this moment was until she was telling her Beetlejuice Beetlejuice co-stars Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O'Hara about it two years ago. 'I was almost telling it like it was this funny story,' she confessed. 'Then I'm looking at Jenna's face and imagining it happening to her. It wasn't until that moment that I was like, 'Oh my God, this is bad.''

Uma Thurman Says She Didn't Realize ‘Pulp Fiction' Would Be As Iconic When She Was Making It

Though now widely recognized as a seminal film with indelible cultural influence — sparking references, parodies and homages aplenty since its 1994 release — Pulp Fiction, created on a small seven-figure budget, wasn't something star Uma Thurman initially realized would have such a watershed impact. In a recent interview with The Times U.K., the Oscar nominee discussed her four-decade-plus career and turn alongside Charlize Theron in Victoria Mahoney's The Old Guard 2, released July 2 on Netflix. More from Deadline 'Squid Game' Is Still Blowing Up For Netflix Charlize Theron On Studios' "Risk" Aversion Toward Action Films With Female Leads: "Guys Will Get A Free Ride" 'Old Guard 2' Director Victoria Mahoney On Charlize Theron & Uma Thurman, Being #1, Sequels, 'Star Wars' & Miles Davis 'I knew it was special, you could tell from the writing, the uniqueness,' Thurman said of the Quentin Tarantino- helmed and written feature, 'but it was a relatively small film.' Amid its debut at Cannes, where it won the coveted Palme d'Or, Thurman had already been acting for 10 years. At 24, she starred as Mia Wallace, the wife to Ving Rhames' crime boss and an aspiring actress, for which she was Oscar nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category. Though her black bob cut, monochromatic attire and penchant for cigarettes comprised an iconic look for the era, Thurman wasn't Miramax's first choice for the project — with Michelle Pfeiffer, Meg Ryan, Holly Hunter and Rosanna Arquette being considered — and stated previously she was unsure about taking on the role. 'He wasn't this revered demigod auteur that he has grown into,' she told Vanity Fair previously, adding she was in a 'funny little slump' following the box office failure of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and that the vulgarity of the film made her initially hesitant. 'And I wasn't sure I wanted to do it because I was worried about the gimp stuff. No one could believe I even hesitated in any way. Neither can I, in hindsight.' Elsewhere in her interview with The Times, Thurman spoke of her daughter, Stranger Things actress Maya Hawke, and how she avoids giving her professional advice: 'Oh, she knows what she's doing. She went to Juilliard, thank God. She actually finished high school. And what I did learn [about mothering] is that nobody listens. So it's really about being there for [my kids] rather than telling them what to do,' she said. Pulp Fiction, about two hitmen — portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta — and how their exploits intersect with the lives of a cast of characters existing in the criminal underworld of Los Angeles, also stars Bruce Willis, Tim Roth, Christopher Walken and Harvey Keitel. Considered Tarantino's magnum opus, the flick was nominated for seven Oscars, winning for Best Original Screenplay. Thurman can currently be seen flexing her Kill Bill-era action skills in The Old Guard 2 as well as Showtime's Dexter: Resurrection, now airing its first season. Ben Affleck And Gwyneth Paltrow Relationship Details In New Book

This post contains brief discussions of alcohol addiction. Thinking about it today, Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow might seem like an oddly matched couple, but in the '90s, they were pretty loved up. In late 1997, a few months after her split from Brad Pitt, Gwyneth met a guy named Ben at a Miramax party. Ben was on the rise at the time, preparing to release Good Will Hunting, and he and Gwyneth hit it off. The pair dated on and off for three years before splitting in 2000. If there's one thing we know about Gwyneth, it's that she's pretty good at maintaining good relationships with her exes, which seems to be the case with her and Ben. In 2015, she told Howard Stern that he's 'super intelligent and really, really talented,' but that their relationship didn't work out because 'he wasn't in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend.' Now, thanks to some newly released excerpts from a forthcoming biography all about Gwyneth's life and career, we have some new insight into the struggles that these two faced during their romance. In the new book, Gwyneth: The Biography, author Amy Odell writes that though Gwyneth and Ben were a good intellectual match, the Gone Girl star had 'demons.' 'Affleck was struggling with alcoholism and a gambling habit around the time he met Gwyneth,' she alleges. 'Her friends had reservations about him because he didn't always reciprocate her affection. He at times seemed more interested in playing video games with the guys at his house than being with Gwyneth.' Despite this, Gwyneth and Ben apparently had great sexual chemistry, and she 'spoke openly about how much she enjoyed their sex life.' 'She told [her friend makeup artist Kevyn] Aucoin one day that she loved when Affleck [engaged in a certain sex act],' Odell writes in the book. This kinda tracks, given that Gwyneth said on the Call Her Daddy podcast in 2023 that Ben was 'technically excellent' in bed… However, no amount of physical chemistry could outweigh 'his self-destructive impulses,' the book suggests, 'which may have even included cheating on her.' They split in 1998, shortly after the opening of their movie, Shakespeare in Love, which won Gwyneth an Oscar for Best Actress in 1999. Ben and Gwyneth did get back together for a while, although the relationship was apparently strained in October 2000 when 'Affleck's addiction issues resurfaced,' causing them to split for good. 'While he had been turning to alcohol, she was practicing Ashtanga yoga six times a week, meditating daily, and watching her diet,' Odell writes. Ben has talked openly about his past struggles with alcohol misuse, and first went to rehab for alcoholism in 2001. He sought treatment for alcohol addiction on subsequent occasions in 2017 and 2018, and is now happily sober. As for his love life, Ben was engaged to Jennifer Lopez from 2002 to 2004, and after their split, he married Jennifer Garner in 2005. He and Jen Garner welcomed three children during their marriage, before separating in 2015. In 2021, he got back together with and they tied the knot in 2022. However, they ultimately got divorced after just over two years of marriage in 2024. Meanwhile, Gwyneth met Chris Martin in 2002, and the pair were married by the following year. Chris and Gwyneth welcomed two children together, Apple and Moses, before announcing their split (or 'conscious uncoupling') in March 2014. Today, she is married to Brad Falchuk, whom she began dating in 2014. Gwyneth: The Biography by Amy Odell hits shelves on July 29 and is available for pre-order here.
