Ben Affleck And Gwyneth Paltrow Relationship Details In New Book
Thinking about it today, Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow might seem like an oddly matched couple, but in the '90s, they were pretty loved up.
In late 1997, a few months after her split from Brad Pitt, Gwyneth met a guy named Ben at a Miramax party. Ben was on the rise at the time, preparing to release Good Will Hunting, and he and Gwyneth hit it off. The pair dated on and off for three years before splitting in 2000.
If there's one thing we know about Gwyneth, it's that she's pretty good at maintaining good relationships with her exes, which seems to be the case with her and Ben. In 2015, she told Howard Stern that he's 'super intelligent and really, really talented,' but that their relationship didn't work out because 'he wasn't in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend.'
Now, thanks to some newly released excerpts from a forthcoming biography all about Gwyneth's life and career, we have some new insight into the struggles that these two faced during their romance. In the new book, Gwyneth: The Biography, author Amy Odell writes that though Gwyneth and Ben were a good intellectual match, the Gone Girl star had 'demons.'
'Affleck was struggling with alcoholism and a gambling habit around the time he met Gwyneth,' she alleges. 'Her friends had reservations about him because he didn't always reciprocate her affection. He at times seemed more interested in playing video games with the guys at his house than being with Gwyneth.'
Despite this, Gwyneth and Ben apparently had great sexual chemistry, and she 'spoke openly about how much she enjoyed their sex life.' 'She told [her friend makeup artist Kevyn] Aucoin one day that she loved when Affleck [engaged in a certain sex act],' Odell writes in the book.
This kinda tracks, given that Gwyneth said on the Call Her Daddy podcast in 2023 that Ben was 'technically excellent' in bed…
However, no amount of physical chemistry could outweigh 'his self-destructive impulses,' the book suggests, 'which may have even included cheating on her.' They split in 1998, shortly after the opening of their movie, Shakespeare in Love, which won Gwyneth an Oscar for Best Actress in 1999.
Ben and Gwyneth did get back together for a while, although the relationship was apparently strained in October 2000 when 'Affleck's addiction issues resurfaced,' causing them to split for good. 'While he had been turning to alcohol, she was practicing Ashtanga yoga six times a week, meditating daily, and watching her diet,' Odell writes.
Ben has talked openly about his past struggles with alcohol misuse, and first went to rehab for alcoholism in 2001. He sought treatment for alcohol addiction on subsequent occasions in 2017 and 2018, and is now happily sober.
As for his love life, Ben was engaged to Jennifer Lopez from 2002 to 2004, and after their split, he married Jennifer Garner in 2005. He and Jen Garner welcomed three children during their marriage, before separating in 2015. In 2021, he got back together with J.Lo, and they tied the knot in 2022. However, they ultimately got divorced after just over two years of marriage in 2024.
Meanwhile, Gwyneth met Chris Martin in 2002, and the pair were married by the following year. Chris and Gwyneth welcomed two children together, Apple and Moses, before announcing their split (or 'conscious uncoupling') in March 2014. Today, she is married to Brad Falchuk, whom she began dating in 2014.
Gwyneth: The Biography by Amy Odell hits shelves on July 29 and is available for pre-order here.

Meghan Markle's Former BFF Going Through Major Life Change: Report
Meghan Markle's Former BFF Going Through Major Life Change: Report originally appeared on Parade. Jessica Mulroney has reportedly split from her husband of 16 years, Ben Mulroney. On July 29, Page Sixreported the news and said that Jessica, 45, has taken off her wedding ring. "They're split. Jessica seemed sad, but also relieved to have some clarity," a Canadian source told the outlet, while another source said the pair separated "some time ago." A source also confirmed the reported breakup to Us Weekly. In Instagram selfies posted on June 28 and July 24, the Canadian fashion stylist did not appear to be wearing her wedding band. However, Jessica did share a birthday tribute for Ben, 49, on March 12, writing, "Happy belated Birthday Benny! Hope all your wishes come true as well as Bruce Wayne's dream to try my cheesecake. Xx." The former best friend of Meghan Markle also celebrated the pair's wedding anniversary via Instagram with a series of sweet photos on November 17, 2024, admitting that they had forgotten about the special day. "Ok so our wedding anniversary was a slight oversight this year ( ie… we forgot). But the love all year round makes up for it," she wrote. "Which reminds me, how many years has it been @benmulroney? I feel lucky everyday so what's a number?" Jessica and Ben—who works as a radio host and is the eldest son of late former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney—tied the knot in 2008 after having met as teenagers. In a heartfelt 2018 Instagram post, the marketing consultant detailed the pair's love story. "We met when I was 14 years old. He was of course MUCH older. Ben's family moved back from Ottawa to MONTREAL four blocks away from my family's home. We met. We hung out. We kept in touch through so many moves and failed relationships," she wrote. "12 years later, we went on our first date. (thanks to my sister Liz for pushing me to go). It was the best date of my life. 9 months later we were engaged. 9 months after that married. "It was a beautiful wedding (if you were there, highly likely you don't remember it) I was lucky enough to inherit the most wonderful in laws (brothers and sisters included) imaginable. "We had twin boys. Then a little girl. We've worked hard. We've laughed harder. And we will continue to make the most wonderful memories. "I felt like the luckiest girl ten years ago. I feel even luckier now. Ben, you are and will always be, my everything. Hopefully we will get to see the whole world together. Until then Australia." The pair welcomed their twin sons, Brian and John, in August 2010. Their daughter Isabel was born in June 2013. Jessica and Markle, 43, were once close friends, but haven't been spotted together in quite some time. Their reported rift allegedly began in June 2020, when Canadian lifestyle influencer Sasha Exeter publicly accused Jessica of showing "textbook white privilege" and "very problematic behavior and antics," People reported. In September 2020, Jessica took to her Instagram Stories to seemingly deny a falling out with Markle. "I'm going to tell this once and for all. Meghan and I are family. She is the kindest friend and has checked up on me everyday. Tabloid culture is atrocious. It creates lies and hurtful storyline[s]. Stop feeding into it. Done," she said, according to People. However, the former best friends "haven't been seen publicly together in years," per the outlet. Gwyneth Paltrow Allegedly Sent Goop Employees a Harsh Message About Toilet Etiquette in the Office
A revealing new biography is making allegations about Gwyneth Paltrow's allegedly 'cold' treatment of Goop staff, including a message she reportedly sent about office toilet etiquette. Amy Odell's Gwyneth: The Biography alleges that the 52-year-old actress once apparently 'found pee on a toilet seat at the office' and wasted no time in calling it out on a public Slack channel. More from SheKnows Inside Gwyneth Paltrow & Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's Reported Feud Back in the 90s 'Someone tinkled,' Paltrow allegedly wrote to employees, according to Odell's book. 'Make sure to clean up after yourselves, I'd appreciate it.' Odell goes into more detail about the alleged dynamics behind the scenes at Paltrow's wellness company, which she founded in 2008 and still works there as CEO. Allegedly, many who 'worked up the nerve to go into her office' allegedly experienced 'impatience' and 'attitude.' Odell writes, 'If an employee replied to one of her emails with 'thanks' or 'on it,' she'd tell them not to send those emails, because they were a waste of time.' Per the book, this hostile 'dynamic was subtle but damaging' within the company. 'Almost no one — Goop's board included — was willing to tell her no,' Odell claims. Goop has long faced criticisms for its dubious pseudoscience, expensive items, and 'out of touch' marketing tactics. However, Odell writes that this was always part of the allure, noting that the brand was 'an odd window into her world and what it was like to have that money, that privilege and that lifestyle.' 'I think part of the appeal of Goop's wellness products and content was — I'll get one step closer to Gwyneth's beautiful life,' she wrote. 'But you can't buy Gwyneth's life. You can't buy that privilege.' According to Odell, Paltrow has never been concerned about the backlash, and neither were 'Goop's board nor its investors.' 'This is what drove her to do the business. She thought, I'm going to research things, recommend things, and if you want to go traditional, go see your GP. That's not what I'm going to do. I'm not going to tell you to get a checkup,' a former Goop executive told Odell in the book. Paltrow shared her response to the many criticisms of Goop in a 2011 Harper's Bazaar UK profile. 'There were a couple of times when I thought, 'I'm just gonna stop doing it. People are so mean to me. I don't want to do it,'' she shared, per New York Daily News. 'But then I was like, 'Who cares what some lame person out there says?' I was in Italy once, and this old man came up to me and said, 'I had the best time in Nashville because of Goop.' And that is so worth it to me.'Best of SheKnows Tom Cruise's Full Dating History Is Filled With Many A-List Women Who Is Pamela Anderson Dating? Sony Shake-Up: Peter Kang Elevated to Head of Columbia, Marketing Execs Upped
The executive ranks at Sony's movie studio are getting a shake-up, with Peter Kang being promoted to president of production of Columbia Pictures and Josh Greenstein stepping down as president of the Motion Picture Group. Sony brass officially confirmed the two moves hours after word broke that Greenstein is going to work for David Ellison in a major role once Skydance closes its $8 billion merger with Paramount Global. Earlier this year, Tom Rothman signed a multi-year extension on his contract as the chairman-CEO of Sony Pictures' Motion Picture Group, signaling that the top job isn't available as of yet. More from The Hollywood Reporter Josh Greenstein Leaving Sony for Major Role at Paramount Once Skydance Merger Closes David Letterman Rips CBS Over 'Late Show' Cancellation: "Pure Cowardice" 'South Park' Creators Reveal Network Battle Over Premiere's Trump Penis as They Joke: "We're Terribly Sorry" Kang will report to Sanford Panitch, who now becomes the sole president of Sony's motion picture group, having previously shared the job with Greenstein. Kang joined Sony in 2019 from Lionsgate, where he served as co-president of production. He is a veteran of Paramount and 20th Century, working on projects that include the Planet of the Apes franchise and Gone Girl. Panitch joined Sony in 2015 and a year later was named the president of Columbia Pictures. In 2019, he was promoted to president of the Motion Picture Group alongside Greenstein. Prior to Sony, he held positions at 20th Century (née Fox) and founded Fox International Productions. While Greenstein shared creative oversight with Panitch as co-president of the Motion Picture Group, he came from the marketing and distribution side of the aisle initially. In the wake of his departure, Danielle Misher, head of theatrical marketing, and Steven O'Dell, president of international marketing and distribution, will continue to oversee the marketing operation at the Motion Picture Group. The duo will now report directly to Rothman instead of Greenstein. Also on the marketing side, Nicholas Weiss and Dave Fruchbom have been promoted to co-heads of Global Creative and Strategy, reporting to Misher and working closely with O'Dell on international matters. And in further changes on the production side in the wake of Kang's promotion, 35-year Sony veteran Andrea Giannetti has been elevated to EVP, production and senior creative at Columbia Pictures. Kang and Giannetti will continue to report to Panitch. 'We are all sorry to see Josh go. He has been a wonderful colleague for many years, and we wish him the very best,' Rothman said. 'The key to a sound organization, however, is to have a strong bench. Our marketing group has that, and I am very pleased to recognize some of our outstanding longtime talent with expanded roles. Dave and Nick are two of the finest creative advertising minds I have encountered in my many years of doing this, and Danielle and Steven provide expert, experienced leadership. I am confident our marketing prowess will only grow.' Rothman continued, 'Likewise, Peter is one of the most skillful and dedicated production executives in all of Hollywood. Sanford and I have worked with him off and on for over 25 years, with great success. I'm sure that Peter will keep the Columbia lady's torch shining brightly, and that Ange will continue to deliver big hit movies, as she always has. And I know I can count on Sanford to embrace his expanded responsibilities. The depth and breadth of his abilities are unmatched and critical to our success.' Sony's upcoming slate includes Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing and Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell's A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, with new installments in the world for the Spider-Man, Jumanji and 28 Years Later film series. 'I'm thrilled to have someone as accomplished and smart as Peter leading Columbia Pictures,' Panitch said. 'And in addition to the pleasure of working with all the many capable executives at each of the divisions I oversee, I feel especially fortunate to collaborate directly with the exceptional Ange Giannetti,' said We have a lot of big event movies moving down our pipeline, so it is a very exciting and promising time at Sony, where we continue to prioritize and prize the theatrical experience.' July 28, 1 p.m. Updated to include the full roster of Sony's moves in the marketing group. A previous version of this story misstated that Sanford Panitch would be receiving a new role at Sony.
