SP stages protest across UP over law and order issue

Time of India01-05-2025

Lucknow: The
Samajwadi Party
(SP) on Thursday staged a protest across all district headquarters in Uttar Pradesh, including state capital, against the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
The protests were held in response to repeated death threats to the party's Rajya Sabha MP and national general secretary,
Ramji Lal Suman
, recent attacks on his residence and convoy, and the rising incidents of atrocities against PDA (Pichhda-Dalit-Alpsankhyak) communities.
SP leaders submitted a memorandum to the President of India through local district magistrates, demanding her intervention in what they described as a breakdown of constitutional values and democratic norms in the state.
"Uttar Pradesh has become a hub of lawlessness, where murders, loot, assaults on women and unchecked violence have become routine. Criminals are operating with impunity, and the BJP-led state govt has completely failed to uphold the rule of law," the memorandum said.

Highlighting a specific case, the SP accused members of Karni Sena of issuing repeated death threats to Suman over the past several weeks. The party also claimed that his residence was attacked, and most recently, on April 27, while he was en route to Bulandshahr, his convoy was attacked in Aligarh. Several vehicles were damaged and some individuals sustained injuries.
"Despite the grave nature of the attack, no action was taken. This indicates that such anti-social elements are enjoying govt patronage. It exposes the anti-Dalit mindset of the UP administration," the memorandum added.
The SP pointed out that party President
Akhilesh Yadav
has been championing the cause of the PDA and fighting for their constitutional rights and dignity.
"But his efforts are being met with backlash from dominant and authoritarian groups who are openly displaying anti-Constitutional and anti-democratic behaviour," the party said.
The memorandum further alleged that such forces do not respect the Constitution drafted by BR Ambedkar and are deliberately targeting vulnerable communities.
"The frequency and brazenness of atrocities against
PDA communities
have risen alarmingly in recent months," it noted.
The party urged the President, as the guardian of the Constitution, to take cognisance of the crumbling
law and order in Uttar Pradesh
and the threats to democratic functioning. "We request you to take decisive action and ensure justice to the oppressed. The future of democracy and the Constitution must be safeguarded," the memorandum stated.
Protests saw participation from SP workers, leaders and members of civil society groups.

No-vending zone: Illegal traders removed from Gurgaon's MG Road in joint operation

Gurgaon: The civic authorities on Tuesday launched a joint anti-encroachment drive on MG Road cracking down on illegal street vendors and unauthorised carts that have long hindered pedestrian movement and road safety along this key corridor. Two enforcement teams from GMDA and four teams from MCG, numbering around 30 staffers, were deployed to target areas near MG Metro Station, Heritage City, IFFCO Chowk and Beverly Park 1. Over 40 illegal carts were removed and vendors were instructed to cease operations. MG Road — which connects key commercial hubs, metro stations and residential complexes across a 2.5km stretch — is a no-vending zone and no carts or other vendors are allowed to operate on this stretch, according to the GMDA officials. The enforcement drive came after concerns were raised by residents and commuters regarding persistent encroachments despite the ongoing streetscaping efforts on MG Road, which is being carried out by the GMDA at a cost of Rs 11.3 crore. TOI reported on May 30 that encroached footpaths and cycle tracks undermined the purpose of the streetscaping project on MG Road. Nodal officer for encroachment and DTP at GMDA RS Batth said, "While the encroachments have been largely temporary, regular drives will continue to ensure MG Road remains free of illegal carts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Such activities will not be tolerated." Meanwhile, residents have taken this development with a pinch of salt. "We have seen similar drives in the past, but within hours — not days — things go back to square one. While we do welcome the action, what we really need is a lasting solution that ensures pedestrian safety and restores the proper functionality of this road," said RWA president of Essel Towers Dr Rajeev Sinha. Earlier, GMDA CEO Shyamal Misra convened a meeting with senior officials, including MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, to discuss challenges faced on MG Road, with a particular focus on illegal vending and encroachment. Subsequently, GMDA, in coordination with MCG and Gurgaon Traffic Police, carried out the joint operation.

Operation Sindoor raised India's stature globally: CM Yadav

Bhopal: Chief minister Mohan Yadav said on Tuesday that Operation Sindoor has raised India's stature at global stage. He has denied that the government hurriedly agreed for a ceasefire with Pakistan. The CM was addressing the media at the state BJP office on the completion of 11 years of Narendra Modi-led NDA govt at the Centre. He said that the appeal for a ceasefire came from Pakistan, which never happened in previous combats. "It meant that the backbone of the enemy was broken," Yadav added. Asked about the success of the nuclear weapons test in Pokhran in May 1998 despite the US sanctions threat and whether the Operation Sindoor ceasefire happened prematurely despite being in a strategic position, the CM said, "During the Pokhran nuclear test, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was facing a different set of difficulties from the US and other countries. But the inner strength was such that our scientists were dressed in army clothes for the Pokhran test. Also, see the capture of Tiger Hill and the Kargil combat extended to three months. But even in those circumstances, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee ensured that we remained within our territory. At that time, we were running a govt with 25 other political parties and had our limitations." In contrast, he said that today, PM Narendra Modi keeps reiterating at every public meeting that Operation Sindoor is not yet over. Our technology has changed so much that there is no need to cross our borders. Technology is so strong that our army was capable, with technology, to hit just a few feet away from their nuclear facility," the CM argued. "Hit us where you want to hit from. We have destroyed your airfields," he said. He stated that the Indian armed forces demolished the enemy and caused heavy casualties by striking at terrorist bases. He further explained that the most important point is that within a short period, the enemy's back was broken, and it was destroyed. "That is why the ceasefire appeal came from Pakistan. This time, Pakistan, which claims to be a nuclear power, asked for a ceasefire, which did not happen in the earlier combats. This is PM Modi's way of dealing with the enemy. Even after that, in every public meeting, our PM says that Operation Sindoor is not over; it will continue. This can be said only in utmost confidence while the Pakistan Prime Minister speaks the language of helplessness." He argued that after the US and Israel, India is the third country to enter enemy territory and destroy terrorist camps. CM Yadav said that in the modern world, wars will be fought using advanced technology. "In the new world, wars will be fought armed with technology, and after Operation Sindoor, India's stature has grown globally. Thanks to our army and PM Modi," the chief minister said. There are missiles that can hit in a range as far as 3000 to 5000 km, Mohan Yadav reasoned. He also said that the language of J&K leaders Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), and even the Hurriyat Conference changed after the abrogation of Article 370.
