Chennai Metro Rail won't top up old travel cards starting August 1
CHENNAI: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will phase out its existing travel cards and migrate entirely to the Singara Chennai National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) from August 1.
From that date, top-up services for the older CMRL travel cards will be discontinued across all 41 metro stations. Other ticketing methods such as QR tickets will remain unchanged.
Commuters holding the old CMRL cards can continue using their cards until the balance is exhausted.

Once the residual value falls below Rs 50, passengers must surrender the card at any metro station counter. They will then receive a Singara Chennai Card free of charge, with the remaining balance and deposit amount transferred to the new NCMC card for continued use.
CMRL first introduced the NCMC-compliant Singara Chennai Card on April 14, 2023, alongside the older CMRL travel cards. The transition is aimed at creating a unified ticketing system compatible with multiple modes of transport and urban mobility services.

Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Tamil Nadu on Saturday to inaugurate, lay the foundation stone, and dedicate to the nation a slew of development projects across key sectors, collectively valued at over Rs 4,800 crore. PM Modi's visit comes immediately after returning from official trips to the UK and the Maldives. He will first arrive in Tuticorin, where he will unveil a series of infrastructure and connectivity initiatives aimed at boosting the state's economic and industrial growth. In a significant step toward enhancing regional air infrastructure, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the new terminal building at Tuticorin Airport, built at a cost of around Rs 450 crore. Spread over 17,340 square metres, the terminal is designed to handle 1,350 passengers during peak hours and up to 20 lakh annually, with future expansion planned for 1,800 peak-hour passengers and 25 lakh per year. The terminal incorporates sustainable features such as 100 per cent LED lighting, energy-efficient systems, and treated water reuse through an on-site Sewage Treatment Plant, qualifying it for a GRIHA-4 sustainability rating. The Prime Minister will also dedicate two major national highway projects to the nation. The first is the four-laning of the 50 km Sethiyathope–Cholapuram stretch of NH-36, developed under the Vikravandi–Thanjavur corridor at a cost of over Rs 2,350 crore. This includes bypasses, a 1-km bridge over the Kollidam River, flyovers, and underpasses, and is expected to cut travel time by 45 minutes in the region. The second project involves the six-laning of the 5.16 km NH-138 Tuticorin Port Road, constructed at a cost of Rs 200 crore. It includes multiple underpasses and bridges, aimed at facilitating smoother cargo movement, reducing logistics costs, and promoting port-led growth near the V.O. Chidambaranar Port. PM Modi will also inaugurate North Cargo Berth–III at the V.O. Chidambaranar Port, developed at a cost of approximately Rs 285 crore. The berth has a handling capacity of 6.96 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and will boost dry bulk cargo operations in southern Tamil Nadu. On the railway front, the Prime Minister will dedicate three crucial projects to the nation. These include the electrification of the 90 km Madurai–Bodinayakkanur line, the doubling of the 21 km Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari section (part of the Thiruvananthapuram–Kanniyakumari corridor), and the doubling of Aralvaymozhi–Nagercoil Junction (12.87 km) and Tirunelveli–Melappalayam (3.6 km) routes. These projects, with a combined investment of over Rs 650 crore, will improve connectivity, enhance eco-friendly travel, and support economic growth in the southern districts. To further strengthen the state's energy infrastructure, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for an Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) project to evacuate power from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 (2x1000 MW). The Prime Minister will attend the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival at Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple in Tiruchirappalli, celebrating the birth anniversary of the great Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I.

Citing deadline, tourism department pushes Roerich eco-tourism plan in Karnataka
Bengaluru: Citing the city's lack of nature-based recreational spaces and a looming central funding deadline, the tourism department has made a strong pitch to implement a Rs 99.2-crore eco-tourism and cultural hub at Roerich and Devika Rani estate, located off Kanakapura Road and bordering Bannerughatta forest range. At a high-level review meeting chaired by forest minister Eshwar Khandre Thursday, a day before the matter came up at the high court, tourism officials stressed that if the project isn't executed by March 2026, the state stands to lose Rs 65 crore in central funds earmarked for the initiative. The govt has granted its in-principle approval for the project, which, if implemented, will see a mix of amenities, including cultural centres, walking trails, eco-lodges, and public infrastructure. Officials argued Bengaluru, despite its size and population, lacks a large-scale green recreational zone anchored in ecological and cultural heritage. The Roerich estate, they said, could fill that gap. With the estate's legacy and landscape, this could become a model site for sustainable cultural tourism," a senior official said. However, forest department officials at the same meeting raised red flags over the ecological sensitivity of the area. The 468-acre estate lies within an elephant corridor that connects Bannerughatta and Savanadurga forest ranges. Karnataka's only elephant overpass, designed to help these animals migrate across human-dominated landscapes, is located nearby. Forest officials shared camera trap images showing regular movement of elephants, leopards and other scheduled mammals in the region. "The estate is part of a fragile corridor. Construction here will fragment wildlife movement, especially of large mammals," a forest official present at the meeting said. However, senior forest officials did not formally object to the tourism department's plan during the review meeting, according to multiple sources. In fact, earlier on Tuesday, the principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) had recommended the project to the Union environment ministry. "There are some technical issues encountered in the Parivesh portal while uploading the working and management plans. Hence, the management plan of the tourism department is submitted with a request to forward it to the MoEF&CC regional office for further approval," the PCCF letter read. Tourism officials at the meeting are said to have acknowledged the presence of wildlife, but maintained that their design includes mitigation measures and does not violate forest laws.

Sigandur emerges as new tourist hub for NK folks
Hubballi: Sigandur, home to the state's longest bridge inaugurated recently, is fast becoming a favourite getaway for North Karnataka travellers. With people thronging the spot in private vehicles and group tours, travel agencies are adding Sigandur to their itineraries. Seeing the growing interest, NWKRTC has also started package tours from various locations to the destination. Priyanga M, managing director, NWKRTC, Hubballi, told TOI that this time they have introduced more tourist packages to Sigandur, Gokak, Amboli, Banavasi, Dandeli, apart from Jog Falls. "Responding to the tourists' demand, we have introduced package tours to Sigandur from Hubballi, Dharwad, Haveri, Ranebennur, Bagalkot, Gadag, and Sirsi.
