I paid a visit to a North Wales seaside resort's unique garden centre and café

A garden centre and cafe with a difference was officially opened last month. Bryn Euryn Nursery and Café in Dinerth Road in Rhos-on-Sea had already been operating for some time - but the site may have flown under the radar for some.
So what can customers expect? This garden centre and café, with an adjoining shop, provides employment mentoring to people with disabilities wanting to get into paid work. Cllr Charlie McCoubrey, Conwy Council's Leader, has said he is proud that investment by the local authority, with extra money from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, will enable the team to help people with learning disabilities to learn useful skills.
The nursery and cafe are at the very bottom of Dinerth Road, before you get to the underpass, and the site is well-signposted. Around the corner, in fact, is Bron-y-Nant Cemetery by Colwyn Bay Crematorium and Mochdre Recycling Centre.
You can park on Dinerth Road, although it's quite a slope. You can walk straight down a ramp or steps to the nursery itself or go through the shop into a bright, colourful cafe.
There are lots of square tables in blue, green, orange, pink and yellow so there are plenty of places to sit.
I went to the counter and was told meals weren't being served due to a staffing issue, I believe. But coffee and cake were available.
There were lots of "homemade" scones, bara brith and other desserts. So I chose a slice of vanilla sponge cake with mixed berries, paid and sat down by the window.
When the waitress came over the cake tasted light and soft. It was very pleasant although I would have liked a thicker piece. A latte washed it down which was fine.
The menu shows they normally serve traditional fare with some nice touches. For breakfast you can have a breakfast bap for £6 - comprising bacon, sausage, tomato, hashbrown and an egg - or cheesey beans in a slice of bloomer toast for £4.50.
For lunch there are sandwiches and lite bites, including Welsh rarebit (£5), or layered hummus (£6), topped with red onion, tomato, pomegranate and coriander with crispy bread.
There is also a Speciality Ciabatta with Italian meats, mozzarella, pickles, rocket and mustard (£7). Or try a Reuben one (for £7) with thin beef, cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing.
The cafe itself is in a large, hangar like room. Colourful paper balls dangle above the window and ribbons are festooned across the ceiling. It looks like there's been a permanent party.
I particularly liked the coffee table, cookery style books left on each table for you to peruse. On mine was Sabrina Ghayour's Persiana Everyday with recipes for dishes like Bazaar, spiced, chickpea & feta salad, and Sticky tamarind, garlic and tomato green beans.
On another table was Mary Berry's "Classic" recipe book. There were lots of ideas for amateur cooks to take inspiration from: Pan-fried cauliflower steaks, anyone?
But I think that the main attractions of an informal lunch or coffee break at Bryn Euryn are the purpose of this place and its setting. Not only are you supporting the staff to mentor those needing a helping hand, you can do so while enjoying the wonderful array of plants on sale.
Wandering around the adjoining nursery before or after the food is a lovely thing to do. It puts you in a good mood and soothes you.
In the shop are a plethora of seed packets on sale - spinach, radish, kohl rabi and so on - as well as pots of freesias and sweet peas. Outside, below a terrace, there are a range of products on display from Cordyline to orange, climbing sunblaze roses.

Aldi opens one of its biggest stores in Wales

One of the biggest Aldi stores in Wales has opened its doors. Aldi says it is opening an average of one new supermarket a week for the rest of 2025 as it ramps up its expansion programme. The openings form part of a £650 investment into its store estate this year. This will also see 35 of its supermarkets undergo refurbishments before the end of the year. The expansion push saw the brand open up a new supermarket on Deeside this week, with Team GB diving hero Lois Toulson cutting the ribbon. The Airfields store is 21,000 sq ft and will be run by Store Manager Spencer Kearney, along with a team of 27 staff. Jonathan Neale, Aldi UK managing director of national real estate, said: 'At Aldi, our goal is to make sure people across the UK have access to affordable, high-quality food, and opening new stores is key to making that happen. We're now opening an average of one new store a week for the rest of 2025, showing just how ambitious our plans are to build a store network that will help us reach millions of new customers." I'm also thrilled that we've been able to support a local primary school through our partnership with Team GB.' Team GB star Lois Toulson said: 'I've had a fantastic time opening the new Aldi this morning. It was an honour to officially open the store and welcome customers inside for the first time." The new Aldi store offers large chillers and freezers dedicated to fresh, Welsh meat products, a 'Food to Go' section at the front of the store, and a section full of health and beauty products. Additionally, the new Aldi store is calling on local charities and food banks in Deeside to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the local community. Start-Up Support Helps Newport Entrepreneur Launch Coffee Shop

A Newport man has transformed the setback of redundancy into a fresh start, launching an independent coffee shop with help from Business Wales. The Rich Bean Coffee, founded by Richard Collins, is now open at Caerleon RFC Club and is already showing strong signs of growth. Formerly a sales manager, Richard turned his long-standing passion for coffee into a business venture. Motivated by a desire to take control of his future, he used the opportunity to create a welcoming, community-focused space that offers sustainably sourced coffee and locally produced goods. With guidance from Ian Harvey, a Business Adviser at Business Wales, Richard received the comprehensive start up support he needed to develop a robust business plan and financial forecasts. This expert guidance became key to securing a £2,000 Barriers Grant from Business Wales to fund essential equipment and branding. Business Wales' Green Growth and Equality pledges, which enable pro-active businesses to work sustainably and ensure inclusive and fair workplaces, became essential frameworks for Richard's commitment to ensure The Rich Bean Coffee's products are sustainable and ethically sourced. Richard said: 'With my background in business management and years of experience leading teams in the sales industry, I'd always dreamed of building something for myself. When I was made redundant, it felt like the right time to turn that ambition into reality. 'I'd spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted from the coffee shop and what we could do to build a business that provided local customers a quality experience. That said, starting a business from scratch is never easy. The guidance I received from Business Wales made a huge difference. From developing a business plan to understanding what it really takes to launch successfully, their advice gave me the confidence and structure I needed to take this exciting new step. 'Ian was fantastic from the word go. I built a lot of trust with him and really felt confident that the advice he was offering would guide me in the right direction. I credit him with a lot; he's honestly worth his weight in gold.' Less than one year after the shop's launch, Richard is now scouting new locations that will allow The Rich Bean Coffee to grow the shop's loyal local customer base across Newport. Business Wales Business Adviser Ian Harvey said: 'When Richard first approached Business Wales, his knowledge and experienced background was clear. All that remained was to draw on our range of resources to help assist him in building the skillsets and logistics needed to establish The Rich Bean Coffee. 'The success of the coffee shop shows that many Welsh start ups can achieve great success if the right guidance is in place. That might just be having an experienced adviser on hand to take as a sounding board, or to help identify if financial support is available. In this case, I'm sure that Richard's work will soon see new locations arriving across the region.' Business Wales is funded by Welsh Government. New logo for Cwmbran Green Meadow Community Farm attraction

The logo will be displayed prominently on a three metre wide and 1.2 metres tall timber welcome sign at the entrance to Green Meadow Community Farm's car park from the Greenforge Way roundabout in Cwmbran. The logo features an 'animal icon group' of the silhouette of a bull and the outline of a goat against it as well as the smaller silhouette of a pig with a rabbit at the bull's front hoofs. The writing, in English and Welsh, states 'Croeso i Fferm Gymunedol Green Meadow Community Farm' with Green Medow in large capital letters while a double sided panel will be used as an 'open' and 'closed' sign. The council's planning department has approved advertising consent for the welcome sign. The new logo for Green Meadow Community Farm that is to reopen to the public in September. The small working farm and visitor attraction has been closed to the public since autumn 2022 when the council agreed to a revamp to make it commercially viable. It had to redraw those plans on cost grounds however in September 2023 when it also agreed to provide a further £1.6 million towards the project, that is still intended to make the farm self-sufficient as an attraction. The redevelopment has cost a total of £3.7m and in July the council confirmed the attraction will reopen on Saturday, September 13 with a planned April opening date already missed. Existing buildings are being refurbished as part of the project which also includes building a new play barn and animal barn and improvements to the entrance while the Haybarn will be an event space for weddings, parties and corporate functions. The council announced earlier in August it has appointed BaxterStorey as catering provider and operator for the farm including the 90 seat 'The Farmer's Table' restaurant which is in a new oak-beam conservatory. It will serve locally sourced produce and the restaurant and takeaway will be available without visitors having to pay the farm entry free. Green Meadow has been a working farm for more than 250 years and enthusiasts who feared it would be would be lost to development saved it in the 1980s.
