Captain America: Brave New World called 'a blast' and 'average' in mixed first reactions
Captain America: Brave New World will soon be arriving in cinemas, and some lucky critics have already had the chance to watch the movie and share their initial thoughts.
A lot is riding on the superhero movie as it opens up Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is Anthony Mackie's first film in the role of Captain America. The story follows his character Sam Wilson as he is thrust into the middle of an international incident and must uncover the global conspiracy for the President of the United States Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford).
While all eyes are on this new Cap the first reactions to the movie are mixed at best, with some viewers loving the next chapter in the MCU and others remarking that it has too many flaws to be enjoyable. Many of these critics shared their early thoughts on the film on social media.
After seeing the first 30 minutes of the film Washington Post entertainment reporter Herb Scribner wrote on X: 'Absolute blast. All-in on the story. It just checked so many boxes for me. Felt like an MCU movie where other projects actually matter again. Lots of cohesion.'
Feeling similarly, The Mary Sue assistant editor Rachel Leishman wrote: "Captain America: Brave New World brings an exciting idea for the future of the MCU under Sam Wilson as leader. A pretty solid Cap meets Hulk film but where it shines is in Anthony Mackie and Danny Ramirez's performances. Harrison Ford is having so much fun and I had fun with him."

But not everyone was as taken with the story, film critic Cris Parker wrote on X that the film "didn't quite hit the emotional or narrative highs I was hoping for. Loved Mackie as Cap and I appreciated the more serious tone but it did feel slightly empty."
While critic Emmanuelle Noisette wrote: "Captain America: Brave New World was grounded, entertaining, and to the point. Solid action & mild surprises. Red Hulk [was great]. Felt like it pulled A LOT of political punches. Hard to tell whether the marketing showed too much or if the movie didn't have much else to offer. It was average."
What was clear was that most writers were delighted by Mackie's performance most of all, with writer Chris Gallardo saying the film "proves Anthony Mackie has RIGHTFULLY EARNED the role of Captain America. He puts it all in as Sam Wilson and his chemistry with Danny Ramirez is great! Harrison Ford as President Ross/Red Hulk is charming and the action really rocks when it happens."
For Gizmodo's Germain Lussier the film had its good and bad points: "Kinda disappointed with #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld. There are some good action moments and Mackie is a charismatic Cap but it's all over the place thematically, overly complicated and ultimately a little pointless. It just never had anything to suck me in. A bummer."
While Comic Book editorial director Ben Kendrick also said: "Captain America: Brave New World is a lot of things: some good, some okay. It's exciting, offers a worthwhile message in a divisive time, is a return to form for the mainline MCU after a string of disappointments, and is one of the first to progress the MCU story itself post-Endgame."
Captain America: Brave New World premieres in cinemas on Friday, 14 February.

‘Loki and Daredevil would have a fun match-up!' Tom Hiddleston eyes Marvel collab with Charlie Cox
Tom Hiddleston wants to work with Charlie Cox in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The 44-year-old actor has portrayed Loki since 2011's Thor and is set to return as the God of Mischief in Avengers: Doomsday, and Hiddleston has now revealed he wants to join forces with the Daredevil: Born Again star, 42, in a future MCU project. When Buzzfeed Celeb asked Hiddleston which Marvel actor he'd most like to collaborate with in the superhero franchise, he said: 'I've worked with a lot of them now, and that's been a great joy. It's hard to pick one, because they're all such extraordinary actors. 'I'd like to work with Daredevil. Charlie Cox is a dear friend of mine. I think Loki and Daredevil would have a fun match-up. 'Charlie and I were in a play together on Broadway on Halloween, and I dressed up as Daredevil and he dressed up as Loki. It was really fun!' As well as Hiddleston's Loki, Avengers: Doomsday will see the return of Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as The Human Torch and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing. The 2026 blockbuster will introduce former Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. as Marvel's new big bad, Doctor Doom. While Avengers: Doomsday will include swathes of fan-favourite characters, Cox previously insisted he wouldn't appear in the film. During Marvel's livestream for Avengers: Doomsday in March, the studio revealed returning cast members by showing chairs with their names on the back, though Cox's name did not appear. Following Cox's absence from the announcement livestream, he told Screen Rant: 'It's not there, is it? 'Listen, the way that information gets to us is the same way that it gets to everyone else normally. At least historically, that's been the case. 'Someone sent me the link. I looked for my name. It's not there. So, maybe one day.' Before the livestream, it had been theorised that the Devil of Hell's Kitchen would be included in Avengers: Doomsday, with speculation growing around Christmas last year when Cox was spotted working out at DFRNT Health and Fitness in Western Australia. The gym owners had posted an image of Cox and his wife Sam in the health club with the caption: 'Charlie is currently training for his role in the upcoming Avengers movie', though the actor later revealed he had been training for the second season of Daredevil: Born Again - not for the blockbuster. The actor called his bosses to insist he didn't tell anyone he would be suiting up as Daredevil in Avengers: Doomsday, and admitted he felt 'terrible' when the speculation began. Former Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson might not have any plans to play her MCU role again, but she thinks it "would be fun" to direct a Marvel movie

Yelena (Florence Pugh) can whistle as hard as she likes, but Scarlett Johansson has made it clear that she has no plans on putting the iconic Black Widow wristbands back on and reprising her role in the MCU. After her character sacrificed herself to save the universe in Avengers: Endgame, her little sister has now taken over as the new ex-assassin wanting to go straight, and has been allowed to do so just recently by becoming one of the New Avengers in Thunderbolts. That doesn't mean that Johansson is ruling out returning to the MCU in a different capacity, though, with the former Avenger revealing she'd consider directing a future film in the franchise, instead. While attending Cannes with her recent directorial effort, Eleanor the Great, Johannson spoke about the possibility of popping back to the MCU with Deadline, after parting ways with it in 2021 with Black Widow, which gave her character a fond farewell. 'I think the movies that I like that are big action movies that also have the human connectivity piece," she explained. "Even producing Black Widow and being a part of the production of that, and the development of the story, and the story between Natasha and Yelena… [there is] I think, a way of doing it, a way of maintaining the integrity of the idea of human connection, family, disappointment, all of the things that were themes in [Eleanor the Great], and doing it in a giant way in a giant universe — there's ways of doing that… So, yeah, definitely, it could be, it would be fun.' Her new film still has ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (although it's hard for any film not to nowadays). Former Flag-Smasher Erin Kellyman stars alongside June Squibb in this heartfelt story of a remarkable friendship. Squibb plays the titular Eleanor, who moves to New York and befriends a 19-year-old student (Kellyman). The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jessica Hecht. Marvel star Scarlett Johansson "asked to have [her] credit removed" from Thunderbolts because she "wasn't involved"

Former Black Widow Scarlett Johansson didn't want to be credited on the Marvel Phase 5 movie Thunderbolts*, because she wasn't actually involved with the film. In conversation with Thunderbolts star David Harbour for Interview Magazine, Johansson answered "no" when asked if she'd seen the movie yet. Then, when Harbour congratulated her for being an executive producer, said: "I asked to have my credit removed because I wasn't involved." When Harbour joked that she hated the movie, Johansson answered, "No, you're just wanting that to be the case," then affirmed she's "proud" of the cast. Johansson has been clear before that she has no plans to return to the MCU as an actor, though she has indicated that she's open to directing a movie. "Even producing Black Widow and being a part of the production of that, and the development of the story, and the story between Natasha and Yelena… [there is] I think, a way of doing it, a way of maintaining the integrity of the idea of human connection, family, disappointment, all of the things that were themes in [Eleanor the Great], and doing it in a giant way in a giant universe — there's ways of doing that… So, yeah, definitely, it could be, it would be fun," she said recently. In the same interview with Harbour, Johansson also got candid about her experience as Black Widow. "Like in [Captain America: The] Winter Soldier with Chris [Evans], we were really dynamic. In some of the other films, the cast was so enormous and there was so much plot to serve that you start to feel like you're a device to move it along," she said. Next up for Marvel on the big screen is The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which will kickstart Marvel Phase 6.
