Saudi Arabia customs seize 28.9 kg of cocaine hidden in frozen meat at Jeddah Islamic Port
On Friday, officials from the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) thwarted an attempt to smuggle 28.9 kilograms of cocaine into the Kingdom through Jeddah Islamic Port.
Authority spokesperson Hamoud Al-Harbi said the narcotics were discovered hidden inside a shipment of frozen meat after it underwent customs procedures and was inspected using security screening technology and sniffer dogs.
This incident comes on the heels of a recent bust on June 27, 2025, when officials at the same port uncovered a major shipment of Captagon pills, totaling 732,015, concealed inside wardrobes. That seizure was made possible through the use of advanced security technologies in combination with thorough manual inspections. ZATCA immediately alerted the General Directorate of Narcotics Control, leading to the arrest of four individuals who were the intended recipients of the drugs within Saudi Arabia.
Al-Harbi emphasized that these consecutive discoveries underscore not only the increasing ingenuity of traffickers but also the rising pressure on border authorities to stay ahead of evolving smuggling methods. He reaffirmed ZATCA's commitment to tightening customs controls and maintaining constant vigilance as part of its broader strategy to protect society from harmful substances.
Jeddah port's strategic importance
Given the frequency and scale of recent drug smuggling attempts, the strategic importance of Jeddah Islamic Port cannot be overstated, not only as a major hub for trade but also as a critical checkpoint in Saudi Arabia's efforts to safeguard its borders.

Jeddah Islamic Port, also known as Jeddah Port, is the main port for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's imports and exports. It is the largest Saudi port on the Red Sea in terms of area, expanding over 12.5 km. It is the second largest port along the Red Sea coast in the Kingdom in terms of capacity, after King Fahd Industrial Port in Yanbu.
The significance of the Jeddah Port stems from being a gateway that welcomes Hajj and Umrah pilgrims annually.
It is also a fundamental access point in the Red Sea for re-exportation since 75 percent of maritime trade and transshipment going through Saudi ports take place in this port.
ZATCA's anti-smuggling capabilities and national security mandate
ZATCA, formed through the 2021 merger of the General Authority of Zakat and Tax with the Saudi Customs Authority, has taken on an expanded role in protecting the Kingdom from illicit trade, especially narcotics.
The authority operates across 48 air, land, and sea ports, including:
King Abdulaziz Port
in Dammam – the largest maritime gateway
King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh – a major aviation hub
Al-Haditha Border Port
- Saudi Arabia's largest land port
ZATCA employs a combination of technologies and procedures:
X-ray Scanners for full-container and package inspection
AI-powered risk assessment systems to identify high-risk shipments
K9 detection units
trained to identify narcotics, explosives, and undeclared cash
Manual inspection and coordination with national drug control agencies
Beyond narcotics, ZATCA enforces restrictions on items that violate public safety, religious values, or economic interests, such as weapons, alcohol, counterfeit goods, and unlicensed medications.
The authority also encourages public participation by enabling anonymous tips via a hotline (1910), email (
1910@zatca.gov.sa
), and an international line (+9661910). Verified reports can earn monetary rewards and are handled confidentially.
Saudi Arabia enforces one of the world's strictest anti-narcotics laws, and penalties for smuggling drugs are severe:
Lengthy prison sentences
Heavy financial penalties
Deportation for foreign nationals
In severe cases, the death penalty, particularly for repeat or large-scale offenses
These laws reflect the government's zero-tolerance stance and its priority of protecting public health, national security, and economic integrity

Blue plaques go missing from 3 heritage structures
1 2 Kolkata: Blue plaques, installed by KMC to indicate the heritage status of old structures in the city, have gone missing from three Grade I structures — two temples and a chapel — in the past month. The thefts were reported a month ago from Circular Road Baptist Chapel on AJC Bose Road near Nonapukur, Sabarna Roy Choudhury family's Dwadash Mandir and Sanjher Atchala temple—both in Behala—within five months of the plaques being installed at the heritage structures. KMC officials suspect drug addicts, selling metals for money, might have stolen the plaques. "We were informed about the thefts last month, and our team inspected the heritage sites and found the plaques indeed missing. We suspect that drug addicts might have stolen them," a senior official of KMC's heritage department told TOI. "We have informed police about the missing blue plaques." Circular Road Baptist Chapel founded in 1821 is in Ward 61. The heritage properties of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family are on Sabarna Para Road in KMC's ward 126. But the plaques are yet to be reinstalled at the Behala temples. "We completed the blue plaque installation on heritage buildings in the city a few months ago. Tenders were floated for the procurement of the plaques, based on KMC's list of Grade I heritage buildings. Right now, we don't have extra blue plaques in stock. To get them, we will have to float a new tender, and the process will take some time," said a senior official. Dwadash Mandir—12 Shiva temples with a 'dol mancha' — was established in 1852 and in 1917, Barisha Girls' High School came up on its premises. The Roy Choudhury family also founded Sanjher Atchala temple in 1608. Devarshi Roy Choudhury, secretary of Sabarna Roy Choudhury Paribar Parishad, said, "Last month, we discovered that the plaques had disappeared from Dwadash Mandir and Sanjher Atchala temple. We alerted the KMC and requested officials to install them again. " Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Bikaner man held for faking his death to claim Rs 50L insurance
1 2 Jaipur: A 29-year-old male nurse who faked his death to claim a Rs 50 lakh life insurance policy was arrested in Bikaner after police uncovered forged documents, including a fabricated cremation receipt. Sub-Inspector Devendra Soni of Jai Narayan Vyas Colony police station told TOI that the accused, identified as Mangilal Jiyani, a resident of Sriganganagar district, worked as a day care provider. He was arrested Saturday following a probe triggered by the insurance company's suspicion over irregularities in his claim file. According to Soni, Jiyani purchased a term life insurance policy worth Rs 50 lakh on Aug 9, 2023, paying a monthly premium of Rs 1,221. After just two instalments, he was declared dead of a heart attack on Oct 14, 2023, and a claim was filed in his name. The company flagged the case after noticing the unusually short payment history. Investigations revealed that Jiyani's associate opened a fake bank account to receive the payout and was listed as the policy nominee. To support the claim, the associate presented a forged death certificate and a fabricated cremation receipt. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The latter was allegedly used to secure a false death certificate from the Bikaner Municipal Corporation. Soni said Jiyani went underground after the claim was filed, but investigators continued to pursue the case. "The insurance company suspected that there were contradictions and a lot of inconsistencies in documents submitted to prove his death and suspected that he was still alive," he said. The insurance company denied his insurance claim and began looking into his documents. Police said the fraud came to light after the insurance company's legal officer lodged a complaint on Aug 22, 2024. The inquiry established that Jiyani fabricated documents and staged his death, while his friend attempted to encash the policy. Police are now investigating the involvement of others in the conspiracy and how the fake documents were procured. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Bombay high court fines ex-deputy education director Rs 5L for withholding teacher's pension
Mumbai: Bombay high court imposed Rs 5 lakh cost on Sandeep Sangve, former deputy director of education (DDE), Mumbai region, for depriving a retired college teacher of pensionary benefits and directed him to pay the amount "from his pocket" to the Armed Forces Battle Casualties Welfare Fund. Justices Ajey Gadkari and Milind Sathaye on July 24 said if the cost is not paid by Sangve, in that event, it shall be deducted from his salary. Five days after Sangve's transfer to BMC last month, he was suspended and an inquiry ordered into allegations against him as DDE. The School Education Department and DDE sought a review of HC's July 18, 2024, order to pay Anil Athawale pension under the old pension scheme (OPS) applicable to part-time teachers. DDE's June 2023 order said that he was not entitled to OPS as he was appointed full-time after the Nov 1, 2005, cutoff date. The judges said the only ground raised in the review petition, affirmed by Sangve, was that "facts regarding breakage in service" were not pointed to HC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Vitauthority Learn More Undo Sangve was now "raising a specious plea". The assistant govt pleader (AGP), who also appeared on July 18, 2024, put "substantial efforts" in defending the govt. Pleadings of both sides and record was considered before the order was passed. The judges said "breakage in service" was not even the reason for the June 2023 passed by "the same Mr Sandeep Sangve". Senior advocate Narendra Bandiwadekar, for Athawale, informed that in Oct 2024, the high court in 11 contempt petitions imposed Rs 3.3 lakh cost on Sangve for non-compliance of orders. The judges said "the officer appears to be habitual in violating" HC orders and "has scant respect for law of the land". Bandiwadekar said after Athawale pressed contempt for non-compliance of the July 2024 order, the review petition was filed. The judges said it clearly appears that Sangve with a "mala fide" intention directed the AGP to file it only to harass Athawale "none else". Athawale "as of today is struggling for his lawful pensionary benefits". He is entitled to it under OPS as per HC's order with interest from retirement date. "However the respondent (Athawale), a citizen of India, has been deprived of his legitimate dues due to the obstinate stand adopted by Sandeep Sangve... a govt servant," they said.
