OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed admiration for India's embrace of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, predicting the nation could soon become the company's largest market globally. Speaking on Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath 's 'People by WTF' podcast, Altman lauded India's proactive approach to AI, highlighting its potential to drive societal and economic benefits. Responding to Kamath's query about AI's opportunities for India, Altman underscored the 'incredible energy' and willingness of the Indian populace to integrate AI into various aspects of life. 'The excitement, the embrace of AI in India , and the ability for Indian people to use AI to just, sort of, leapfrog into the future, and invent a totally new and better way of doing things, and the economic benefits that come from that, the societal benefits, if there is one large society in the world that seems most enthusiastic to transform with AI right now, it's India,' Altman remarked. Sam Altman is 'coming soon' to India Altman emphasised that India's 'momentum is unmatched anywhere in the world', adding, 'I think India may be our largest market in the world, at some point, in the not very distant future.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Female Athletes Right Now Undo He added that the 'energy is incredible' and he is 'looking forward to coming soon.' He further elaborated on the shift from being merely a consumer to a producer in the AI space. 'I feel like the question really is, how do we transition from being a consumer to be a producer, where we can build something that other people use outside of India? That was what I meant. I mean, there's lots of things happening there, but that was the thing I meant. I think that's really happening already in a big way,' Altman said. India second-biggest market for OpenAI, may become the largest: Sam Altman
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman appeared on Zerodha cofounder Nikhil Kamath's podcast and gushed about his company's latest large language model (LLM), GPT-5, saying that working on it feels like having "PhD-level experts" available to the user at all times. "The thing that has been most striking for me is in ways that are both big and small, going back from GPT-5 to our previous generation model, is painful. They are worse at everything. And I've taken for granted that there is a fluency and a depth of intelligence with GPT-5 that we haven't had in any previous model," he told Kamath. He said GPT-5 is like an expert not only to ask anything but also to do anything for you. "So if you need a piece of software created, it can do it from scratch. If you need a research report on some complicated topic or if you needed to plan an event for you, it could do that, too." He reiterated that India is the second-biggest market for OpenAI and may become the largest. Altman also noted that the company has taken a lot of user feedback about its models from Indian users. "Better support for languages, affordable access etc. has been added based on user feedback to GPT-5," he said. OpenAI launched GPT-5, which it claims is the smartest and most capable version of its AI models to date, on August 8. The company said the new model is more accurate, more efficient, and has significantly lower hallucination rates than previous versions. GPT-5 introduces a more intelligent system that simplifies how the model works behind the scenes. Instead of users needing to choose between versions such as Turbo or Standard, the system now automatically selects the best fit based on the task."We think GPT-5 will be a huge step forward in the way we use these systems. Each time we had one of these, we were amazed by what it unlocked," he said. However, the much-awaited model has been facing mixed reactions on the internet. Some users said that the new model felt like a 'downgrade,' while others called it 'dumber' than previous versions. During a Reddit 'Ask me anything' (AMA) session on Friday, Altman and members of the GPT-5 team received a wave of feedback from users. Many were unhappy with the new model and asked for GPT-4o to be brought back, especially those who had built their workflows around it.
