ACEN Australia secures $473.5m for renewables portfolio expansion

Yahoo15-04-2025

ACEN Australia has secured $473.5m (A$750m) in portfolio debt financing to bolster its clean energy initiatives in Australia.
The financing supports the company's ongoing and future renewable projects, highlighting ACEN Australia's commitment as a long-term investor in the nation's clean economy.
The funding will support the nearly finished 400MW Stubbo Solar project in New South Wales and follows the first power output from the 400MW Stage 1 of the New England solar project in 2023.
The deal was supported by a group of 11 lenders from Australia and overseas, broadening ACEN Australia's network of finance partners and highlighting strong market trust in the company's growth plans and proven performance.
ACEN Australia managing director David Pollington stated: 'Our ability to attract top-tier financial partners re-inforces our position as a trusted, long-term developer, owner and operator of assets, and reflects growing investor appetite for high-quality, renewable infrastructure in Australia.'
The financing establishes a funding base for ACEN Australia's diverse portfolio, which includes more than 1GW of renewable capacity in operation and under construction, with an additional 13GW in development across the national electricity market.
ACEN Australia chief financial and investments officer Phillip Mak stated: 'This transaction strengthens our funding platform, accelerates our delivery pipeline and positions us as a capable partner backed by a stable and diverse capital base.'
The transaction involved a range of financial institutions: ANZ Banking Group, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, CTBC Bank Co (Singapore branch), CTBC Bank (Philippines) and Cathay United Bank.
Other participants included Deutsche Bank (Sydney branch), DBS Bank (Australia branch) and Westpac Banking.
Macquarie Capital and Morgan Stanley acted as joint financial advisors for the transaction, with Allens serving as legal adviser for ACEN Australia and Herbert Smith Freehills advising the lenders.
ACEN is on track to achieve 100% renewable energy generation by 2025 and reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

CommBank concludes AWS data platform migration

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank) has completed its data platform migration to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance the integration with other bank channels. The move is aimed at facilitating 'personalised' experiences for customers and employees through data, AI, and analytics technologies. The migration process, which commenced in July 2024, was conducted in partnership with HCLTech by migrating over 61,000 data pipelines. CommBank for Data Platforms lead Terri Sutherland said: "Successfully migrating 100 per cent of our data to the Cloud will allow us to simplify our technology stack, reduce our on-premises data centre footprint, and scale our operations per demand. 'Having the right data foundations built on advanced technology enables CBA to unleash its full potential with AI and Agentic AI.' According to Sutherland, CommBank's daily operations now involve the use of AI to make around 55 million decisions that benefit customers and employees. The bank's infrastructure supports over 2,000 AI models that process approximately 157 billion data points. AWS Australia and New Zealand financial services director Jamie Simon said: 'As the bank's preferred cloud provider, AWS is pleased to support CommBank as they build an advanced data and AI platform, utilising our highest standards in security, compliance, and resilience at scale, for its applications. 'This migration represents a significant milestone and provides the foundation for CommBank to accelerate the innovative use of AI and agentic AI to deliver better customer and employee experiences.' In February, CommBank extended its relationship with AWS, confirming a five-year partnership that makes AWS the bank's preferred cloud provider. The move was aimed at enhancing CommBank's cloud infrastructure and AI capabilities. In March, CommBank established the Seattle Tech Hub in the US to further develop its AI capabilities and customer service delivery. Dollar edges down as trade tensions simmer ahead of jobs data

The dollar drifted lower on Wednesday as the market looked ahead to U.S. employment data for immediate trading cues, while waiting on developments in President Donald Trump's tariff negotiations with key trading partners including China. The Trump administration has given a Wednesday deadline for countries to submit their best offers on trade, the same day a doubling of duties to 50% on imported steel and aluminum comes into effect. Trump is also tipped by the White House to have a call this week with Chinese President Xi Jinping after the two sides accused each other of violating the terms of an agreement last month to roll back some tariffs. In the meantime, macroeconomic indicators have returned as a driver of the U.S. currency this week, even if trade frictions remain center stage. The dollar slumped 0.8% against major peers on Monday following a contraction in manufacturing, only to rebound by almost the same amount overnight after a surprise increase in U.S. job openings. Early on Wednesday, the dollar was down 0.09% at 143.82 yen and the euro was up 0.13% at $1.1385. The dollar index, which measures the currency against those two peers and four other counterparts, was flat at 99.159. Traders will have an eye on the ADP employment report later in the day, in the run-up to crucial U.S. monthly payrolls figures on Friday. "Job openings were much stronger than expected," Commonwealth Bank of Australia analyst Joseph Capurso said of the overnight JOLTS data, which is closely watched by the Federal Reserve. "The low estimate for ADP means the USD and U.S. bond yields have a small hurdle to climb for a positive surprise tonight." Elsewhere, the Australian dollar was little changed at $0.6460 ahead of the release of GDP figures. South Korea's won strengthened about 0.2% to 1,375.25 per dollar after the victory of liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung in the country's presidential election.
