A floral escape in the mountains of Taiwan
Walking through a field of white calla lilies and surrounded by fresh mountain air is one of the best ways to welcome spring in Taiwan. While lilies bloom here from March to April, this same field transforms into an expanse of vibrant hydrangeas throughout May to June.
This scenic field of flowers at Yangmingshan's Bamboo Lake, located in Taipei city, is home to the 100-day Bamboo Lake Calla Lily and Hydrangea Festival.
The event is technically made up of two parts: The lily festival, which was held recently, has been celebrated for over two decades, while the hydrangea festival will kick off on May 23. The latter is currently in its 13th year, and will run until June 22.
Themed 'A World Of Imagination', this year's event showcases creative foliage displays crafted by local farmers.
Visitors can also experience two unique installations that make for ideal photo backdrops: The Tree Frog Dream House and the Wheel Of Love.
Enjoy scenic nature walks, discover clear mountain creeks, join craft workshops, and sample local delicacies at the festival.
'Flowers create a unique bond between nature and people. As Taipei continues to enhance its Muslim-friendly offerings, we are committed to providing well-equipped facilities and thoughtful services to ensure all travellers feel welcomed and at ease,' Abe Chou, the director of Kuala Lumpur's Taiwan Tourism Administration office, said in a press statement.
Recognised as one of the Muslim-friendly destinations, ranking third among non-organisation of Islamic Cooperation nations in the 2024 Global Muslim Travel Index, Taipei offers a range of halal dining options, prayer facilities at major attractions, and services tailored for Muslim travellers.
Additionally, Taipei was awarded the 'Most Promising Muslim-Friendly Travel Destination City' by CrescentRating, a Singapore-based research organisation.

AirAsia increases Sabah's connectivity with Japan via new Taipei to Fukuoka route
Published on: Tuesday, August 19, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 19, 2025 By: Crystal E Hermenegildus Text Size: Fukuoka International Airport President and CEO Shinji Tagawa said the airport was honoured to host AirAsia Malaysia's first Japanese destination, adding that the route would further support tourism, business, culture and education links. FUKUOKA: AirAsia Malaysia has spread its wings further into Japan with the launch of its first-ever fifth freedom route, linking Kota Kinabalu to Fukuoka via Taipei – a move that cements Sabah's standing as a regional hub. The maiden service, Flight AK1510, took off from Kota Kinabalu International Airport at 7.40am on August 15 and landed at Fukuoka International Airport at 3.15pm local time. Advertisement The Taipei–Fukuoka sector was fully booked, while the return flight registered more than 80 per cent load, underscoring strong demand. Passengers departing Taipei for Fukuoka also received a personal send-off from AirAsia Malaysia CEO Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra, accompanied by members of the cabin crew. At the launch ceremony in Fukuoka, Fareh described the route as a major achievement. 'This is our first fifth freedom route and a significant milestone for AirAsia. It reflects our commitment to developing Kota Kinabalu as a strategic hub in East Malaysia, while offering more flexibility and affordable fares to travellers. 'We are confident this connectivity will open doors for tourism and business between Kota Kinabalu, Taipei and Fukuoka,' he said. He added that Fukuoka was chosen as a natural entry point into Japan, as AirAsia already serves six other Japanese cities. 'This route enhances connectivity between ASEAN, Taiwan and Japan, while giving travellers from Kyushu a direct link to Sabah,' he said. Fareh said the service will also boost Sabah's tourism appeal. 'Travellers can leave Fukuoka in the late afternoon and arrive in Kota Kinabalu the same evening. From pristine rainforests to Mount Kinabalu, Sabah offers unique attractions at affordable prices. This route also opens access to ASEAN through AirAsia's network of more than 130 destinations,' he said. He pointed out that the route goes beyond tourism by creating opportunities for trade and investment. 'We want to connect people, businesses and industries across these three markets. Sabah is famous for its natural beauty, but it can also be a hub for commerce,' he said. The airline revealed that bookings have been highly encouraging, with the Taipei–Fukuoka sector already hitting the high 90 per cent range. 'Today's flight was 100 per cent sold. Between Sabah and Taipei, most flights are already around 80 per cent booked, and with this new link to Fukuoka, we expect numbers to increase further,' said Fareh. He also highlighted the potential of the Muslim-friendly travel market. 'AirAsia is now the only airline directly linking Kyushu to Kota Kinabalu. With Sabah's strong halal food offerings and reputation as a Muslim-friendly destination, this market has great potential to grow,' he said, noting plans to work closely with Tourism Malaysia on this segment. Tourism Malaysia Director in Japan, Syaliza Abd. Aziz, welcomed the development, calling it a timely boost for Sabah. 'Although this is an extension from Taipei, it gives us new promotional opportunities between Taiwan, Malaysia and Japan. With Visit Malaysia Year coming up, we expect more Japanese tourists to fly directly to Sabah,' she said. She also noted that Japan's growing readiness for Muslim-friendly tourism complements Malaysia's global reputation as one of the top destinations for Muslim travellers. 'This connectivity creates a win-win situation and allows us to attract more visitors to Sabah,' she added. The launch was also applauded by regional officials. Consul General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Fukuoka, Bruce Chen said the service strengthens convenience and people-to-people ties between Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia. Fukuoka International Airport President and CEO Shinji Tagawa said the airport was honoured to host AirAsia Malaysia's first Japanese destination, adding that the route would further support tourism, business, culture and education links. The new service will run daily on Airbus A320 family aircraft, including the A320neo, with 186 seats. Bookings are available from August 16 to 18 for travel until December 15, 2025, via and the AirAsia MOVE app.

Malaysia targets high-value tourists for Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will continue focusing advertising and promotional efforts on attracting high-value tourists while maintaining initiatives for volume tourism under the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said claims that his ministry was solely focusing on potential tourists from China were inaccurate. He stressed that efforts to attract international visitors also involved various other countries. He added that a comparison of foreign tourist arrivals between January and July 2024 and 2025 for 10 countries showed a significant increase. 'Tourist arrivals from Singapore in 2025 rose by 25.5% to 10,288,256, compared with 8,397,886 in 2024; Indonesia increased by 8.2% to 2,197,288 from 2,031,111; China grew by 35.6% to 2,178,857 from 1,607,413; and India recorded a 26.6% rise to 807,664 from 638,109. 'We are not only focused on promoting the country's tourism to China; we also aim to attract high-end and high-spending tourists,' he said when winding up the debate on the motion on the 13th Malaysia Plan for his ministry. Tiong said all advertising and promotional efforts for VM2026 had been strategically planned and implemented across major markets, despite a lack of allocation. He urged all parties, including Members of Parliament, to support efforts to promote the country's tourism and refrain from politicising or sensationalising the initiative. He said the Ministry of Arts, Tourism and Culture continued to focus on all tourism segments, including Muslim-friendly tourism, which offered significant potential. He said MOTAC, through the Islamic Tourism Centre, was committed to developing and promoting Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality, highlighting Quran-based tourism with main attractions such as the Nasyrul Quran Complex in Putrajaya and Yayasan Restu in Shah Alam. 'ITC has also carried out a tourism promotion mission to four major countries, namely China, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, as part of efforts to boost Muslim tourist arrivals, particularly ahead of VM2026,' he said. Meanwhile, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the government encouraged 'pondok' institutions catering to the elderly to register as Senior Citizens Activity Centres to enable them to receive appropriate government support and assistance. She said that although the pondok education system provided lifelong learning opportunities for the elderly, the government could only channel assistance if the institution was officially registered as a PAWE. 'We have advised operators of the pondok schools to establish PAWEs. Once registered, they will be responsible for any activities they undertake and can apply for assistance from the ministry. 'We cannot provide any assistance if they are not registered with us as PAWEs,' she said, addressing an interjection by Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff. Siti Zailah highlighted the need for the pondok education system to be recognised as part of the Action Plan for Senior Citizens 2030, as many elderly individuals choose to stay at these institutions to acquire knowledge.
