‘Akshara Andhra' literacy drive targets 97,200 adults in Eluru
Addressing a meeting at the Collector's Bungalow, Ms. Vetri Selvi highlighted the district's past success in the programme, which earned Eluru the second rank in the State last year. She said the district has identified 3.16 lakh illiterates between the ages of 15–59 through the 2023 caste survey. Of these, 97,200 interested individuals have been shortlisted for phase I of the literacy campaign.
The Collector emphasised the importance of inter-departmental coordination and directed officials to implement a comprehensive action plan to ensure Eluru tops the State in literacy rankings. As part of the campaign, each group of ten learners will be guided by a trained voluntary teacher. Training programmes for volunteers and resource persons will be held from July 21 to August 6, followed by 100 hours of instruction focusing on financial, digital, and functional literacy, with final assessments scheduled for March.
Nodal Officer K.V.V. Satyanarayana noted that last year, 7,286 women from DWCRA groups in 27 mandals were successfully made literate. Senior officials from DRDA, ZP, Education, Panchayati Raj, ICDS, and MEPMA participated in the meeting.

ELURU Eluru District Collector K. Vetri Selvi called upon everyone to actively participate in the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign to foster patriotism among citizens. The Collector reminded everyone of the supreme sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters and martyrs for India's independence and stressed the need to honour their memory through such events. Palm leaf handicrafts skill training for women to begin at Chintalapudi on August 18
ELURU To improve the livelihoods of women belonging to Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) initiative, the district administration will launch a palm leaf handicrafts skill training programme from August 18, said Eluru Collector K. Vetri Selvi. The Collector and Joint Collector P. Dhatri Reddy inspected various handicraft products made from palm leaves by local women here on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Vetri Selvi said that under the guidance of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), women from self-help groups (SHGs) in Chintalapudi and Lingapalem mandals will receive training in crafting items such as flower baskets, hats, garlands, floral bouquets, and decorative dolls from palm leaves. The training will be conducted at Chintalapudi. She explained that after the training, the products would be marketed online and showcased at DRDA-organised exhibitions to increase demand and popularity. The administration will also facilitate access to bank loans and other credit facilities for the artisans. The Collector interacted with the DWCRA women, discussing ways to expand their opportunities and ensure sustainable income through handicrafts. DRDA Project Director R. Vijaya Raju and other officials participated in the programme.

Srikakulam to launch literacy drive for 1.12 lakh adults
Visakhapatnam: Srikakulam has formulated a plan to transform 1.12 lakh illiterate individuals in the district into literates. Adult education volunteers will be selected at a 1:10 ratio and will conduct literacy classes at local Anganwadi centres and community buildings. According to the action plan, the literacy effort will reach 66,000 people through the rural development agency, 36,000 through the rural employment guarantee scheme (NREGS), and 9,000 through the urban development agency. Volunteers will be trained and deployed to teach basic reading and writing skills in small, manageable groups of ten learners each. As part of the 'Akshara Andhra' initiative to improve literacy rates, district collector Dr Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar has directed officials to ensure the programme's successful execution. During a virtual review meeting held via Zoom, the collector said that a coordinated action and detailed planning will help effectively reach every target beneficiary. "These literacy sessions should be conducted in easily accessible spaces such as Anganwadi centres and local community halls, ensuring a conducive and familiar learning environment for adult learners," said the collector. To monitor and guide the programme's progress, a multi-tiered committee structure has been put in place. At the district level, members include the zilla parishad chief executive officer, district planning officer, and directors of rural development, NREGS, and urban development programmes, along with the district education officer and the child development agency officer. Similarly, at the mandal (sub-district) level, committee members will include the MPDO (mandal parishad development officer), school education officer, programme assistants from the rural development and NREGS departments, the child development officer, and supervisors from the adult education wing. Muddada Venkata Ramana, deputy director of adult education, has been appointed as the member secretary of the programme and will coordinate its implementation across the district.
