Crystal Palace needs saving... Could Woody Johnson or Jimmy Butler be a hero?
Crystal Palace is in trouble, but the English Premier League club could be saved by a few heroes from different places.
After defeating Manchester City on May 17 to win the FA Cup, Crystal Palace earned its first-ever major trophy, and with that, an automatic bid into the 2025-26 UEFA Europa League tournament.
However, the club may not be allowed to compete in the Europa League because one of its minority stakeholders, John Textor, also owns a majority stake in the Ligue 1 team Lyon. UEFA's rules prevent two teams with the same ownership to play in the same competition unless shares in one club are placed into a blind trust.
Textor failed to complete that part of the clause by the March 1 deadline. But, he's willing to make up for it by putting his group's stake in Crystal Palace on the market.
There's a couple of groups that could vie for position to obtain Textor's share. The leading candidate is, reportedly, New York Jets' co-owner Woody Johnson, who shares control of the NFL franchise with his brother, Christopher. Johnson also has ties to England as he was the United States' ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2017 to 2021.
Another potential candidate is, reportedly, a group compiled of sports agents and executives, but notably, the face of that group is Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler. Butler has shared his love for soccer, publicly, for many years now and hosted players such as Neymar and Vinícius Júnior at Miami Heat games in the past.
Regardless of who ends up with Textor's share of Crystal Palace, if the transaction is successful, it would resolve the multi-club ownership issue that threatens the team's spot in next season's Europa League, and would allow them to compete for another major trophy.

Monaco interested in move for Paul Pogba
Ligue 1 side Monaco are interested in a move for free agent Paul Pogba. The 32-year-old has been without a club since leaving Juventus by mutual agreement in November 2024, with his last competitive appearance in September 2023. The decision to leave the Serie A side followed the reduction of his four-year ban for failing an anti-doping test to 18 months in October. Pogba's successful appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) meant he was eligible to return to training in January and playing in March. Advertisement The Athletic reported in April that D.C. United were the Major League Soccer (MLS) side that owned Pogba's discovery rights. Pogba had been linked to a move to MLS in part due to the time he had spent in the United States during his ban. The Frenchman has also attended several MLS games, including in Los Angeles and Miami. Though Pogba has 91 caps for France, he has never played professionally for a team in his homeland after coming through the academy at Manchester United and then leaving for Juventus in 2012. Monaco, meanwhile, finished third in Ligue 1 in 2024-25, securing qualification for next season's Champions League. Pogba made just nine appearances for Juventus after rejoining the club from Manchester United in the summer of 2022. After seeing his ban reduced on appeal, Pogba said he was 'willing to give up money' to play for Juventus again. 'I would just like to be on the pitch, any pitch,' Pogba said after the verdict. 'I am still the same player with a different hunger, more motivated and more hungry. I will appreciate the game more than before because the game has been taken away from me. Flamengo And Palmeiras Carry Brazil's Hopes At Club World Cup

The entire 90 minutes were a prolonged practice session for the Premier League team: the South American champion had Marcelo as a full back and Paulo Henrique Ganso in midfield, but Fluminense had no answer to the sheer precision and ruthlessness of Pep Guardiola's drilled XI - the result of a club transformed by the wealth of its Abu Dhabi owners. As they lifted the trophy under a ring of Saudi fireworks in Jeddah, after winning the Champions League earlier that year, City was on top of the world. The outcome had been predictable: the Rio club had a 2023 revenue of $125 million whereas the English champion generated $902 million. Brazil and the rest of the world simply couldn't keep up with the riches flooding into the European game. This summer, City and Fluminense, part of a Brazilian quartet, will be back at the Club World Cup, alongside 30 other clubs in an expanded format, a tournament that is the brainchild of FIFA boss Gianni Infantino. But will Europe's hegemony be challenged at all? In 2012, Brazil's Corinthians were the last non-European team to win the competition, defeating Chelsea 1-0 in the final with a second-half goal from Paulo Guerrero. It was a masterclass from Tite, who served as Brazil manager from 2016 to 2022. Today, Palmeiras's Abel Ferreira is another manager who can mastermind great victories with a defensive mindset, even more so in knockout competitions. He twice led Palmeiras to victory in the Copa Libertadores, the equivalent of the Champions League. Palmeiras endured a difficult start to the current season with a defeat to Corinthians in the local state championship, and, in the national league, the club has relinquished the top spot. Raphael Veiga has returned in time from injury, which means Estevao will move back to the right. This summer, the youngster will depart for Chelsea and he wants to sign off in style. He is the latest in a line of exports after Gabriel Jesus, Danilo, Vitor Reis and Endrick. The Sao Paulo club will get its campaign underway against Porto, but should be able to navigate a group that also includes Al Ahly and Inter Miami. The group of Flamengo, the other dominant force in Brazilian soccer, is perhaps more challenging. The Rio club plays against Esperance de Tunis and Los Angeles, but the standout tie is in Philadelphia against Chelsea. In 2022, Flamengo's revenue passed 1 billion reais ($180 million) for the first time, but the difference with the London club remains substantial. Last year, Chelsea enjoyed a revenue of $635 million. Even so, the Brazilians are optimistic. In an interview, club president Luiz Eduardo Baptista said that the depth of the squad should enable Flamengo to compete on three fronts. However, manager Filipe Luis has pointed to the burdensome, congested calendar. The club struggled to progress from the group stage of the Copa Libertadores. In a boost, playmaker Giorgian de Arrascaeta is reaching again reaching peak form. And that's precisely why Flamengo and Palmeiras could cause an upset in the tournament: European clubs are at the end of their season while Flamengo and Palmeiras, halfway through their campaign, should be at their peak. The economic reality can't be ignored, but at least, the clubs can dream of repeating Corinthians' feat in 2012 when 30,000 Brazilian supporters had the time of their lives in Yokohama.
