Tamil Nadu temple guard dies in police custody, AIADMK demands inquiry
Family members of a temple guard from Sivaganga who died in police custody have alleged that the cause of death of the 28-year-old was not natural and he passed away allegedly after being beaten and tortured during police interrogation. AIADMK's Palaniswami said that Ajit Kumar was reportedly arrested and interrogated by the Thirupuvanam police following a complaint that he had stolen gold jewellery.(PTI)
Ajit Kumar was initially detained for questioning regarding a theft at the Madapuram Kaliamman temple in Tirupuvanam, where he worked as a security guard, the district Superintendent of Police said.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami condemned the incident and demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter and to provide compensation for Kumar's family.
In a post on X, Palaniswami said, "Ajit Kumar, a security guard at the Madapuram temple in Sivagangai district, was reportedly arrested and interrogated by the Thirupuvanam police following a complaint that he had stolen 9.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery from a female devotee's car. During the interrogation, Ajit Kumar allegedly died due to police assault. His relatives, refusing to accept his body, have launched a protest."
"Where is the Chief Minister who once wrote a movie review saying, "I watched Jai Bhim, it shook my heart"? Weren't you the one who blatantly lied even in the State Assembly during the Vignesh lock-up death case? Will we hear the same kind of lies as a response to this case too? If the police believe someone has committed a crime, they must arrest and produce them before the court, following due legal process. they cannot take the law completely into their own hands," he further said.
"I strongly condemn this puppet Chief Minister who cannot even manage the police force that functions directly under his control. Regarding the death of Ajit Kumar, the temple guard, at the Thirupuvanam police station, I urge this so-called DMK "Stalin-model" government to immediately form a committee headed by the District Judge to conduct a full investigation, take legal action against those responsible for this death, and provide compensation to the family of the deceased," Palaniswami said.
Sivaganga District SP said that after this incident, six policemen of the crime branch unit involved in the questioning were placed under suspension by the District Superintendent of Police and an investigation was underway.
Kumar was picked up by police for questioning following a complaint filed by two women, Sivakami and her daughter Nikitha, who alleged that about 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery had gone missing from their car.
On June 26, Niktha, from Tirumangalam in the Madurai district and her 76-year-old mother Sivakami had travelled by car to the temple. Niktha had parked her vehicle near the temple premises and reportedly handed over the keys to Ajit kumar, requesting him to park it aside. As he claimed he did not know how to drive, he is said to have arranged for someone else to move the car.
After their darshan at the temple, Niktha received the car keys back from Ajithkumar. Upon checking, she found that 9 1/2 sovereigns of gold jewellery kept inside the car were missing. When she questioned Ajit kumar, he allegedly denied any knowledge of the missing valuables.
Following this, Niktha lodged a complaint with the police. A special team from the Manamadurai crime branch arrived at the temple and took Ajithkumar in for questioning in a police van.
Later that evening, police claimed that Ajit kumar developed sudden health complications. He was first taken to a private hospital in Sivaganga and then referred to another hospital in Madurai. However, doctors at the hospital declared him dead on arrival.
Kumar's family members and friends alleged that he died as a result of police assault during interrogation.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma 'attacked' with bottles by Congress workers, alleges Assam minister, says ‘goons won't be spared'
Assam Minister and state government spokesperson Piyush Hazarika on Monday slammed the Congress for trying to 'sabotage' democracy in the state and alleged that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was 'attacked with bottles by 'Congress goons'. In a message posted on X, Hazarika said, 'This is how @INCAssam tried to sabotage democracy in Assam. Today their goons attacked the Chief Minister of Assam with bottles, tomorrow these same goons will launch grenades?' 'These cowards will not be spared - both electorally and legally. Mark my word @GauravGogoiAsm,' he wrote while tagging Congress party's Assam chief Gaurav Gogoi. Opposition Congress workers on Monday waved black flags at Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's convoy in Golaghat district as they were protesting the alleged sale of 90 Gir cows, which were procured by the government, to individuals including a minister's wife. Four people were detained in connection with this incident, the police said. According to a PTI report, the Congress party had launched protests in all district headquarters against the alleged sale of the cows procured during the 2022-23 financial year by the state government for its Garukhuti Agricultural Project. Public Health Engineering Department Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah recently claimed that 90 of these cows were sold off to private individuals as there was 'inadequate infrastructure' to house them. Subsequently, a list was released and the minister's wife had allegedly bought 20 of these cows, the report added. Besides protests, the Congress also filed complaints in various police stations seeking action against the minister for alleged 'misappropriation of public property, cheating and corruption' in connection with the procurement of cows for the project. The chief minister who was on a day-long visit to Golaghat later told reporters: 'The Congress will have to protest. How will they survive otherwise? I really appreciate that they came out in this heat to protest. They too have to answer to their leaders,' he added. Referring to the sale of cows, Sarma said that it is surprising that a party that supports 'Qurbani' during Eid is now protesting against cows who were saved and given shelter, PTI reported. 'It is the BJP's 'dharma' to protect cows and that is what some of them have done. The Congress has no moral right to protest against this,' he said. The cows are alive and are being taken care of and 'those who kill and eat cows are now talking about protecting them,' he said.

Relief for Nawab Malik! Defamation case against ex-Maharashtra minister closed as BJP functionary withdraws complaint
Former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik on Monday was granted relief by a magistrate court in Mumbai following BJP functionary Mohit Kamboj withdrew his complaint, reported PTI. In the ruling, the court said, as quoted by the PTI, 'The accused stands acquitted of the offence under IPC section 500 (defamation) and the proceeding is hereby closed.' Earlier, the BJP functionary filed the application for withdrawal of the case under section 257 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). According to Section 257 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), a complainant can withdraw his or her complaint at any time before a final order is passed. However, the magistrate should be satisfied with the grounds for withdrawal and if permitted by the magistrate, then the accused gets acquitted. "Since this court is desirous of keeping the said case on a day-to-day basis, I am desirous to withdraw the case filed against the accused as I will be unable to attend the court on a daily basis," PTI quoted Kamboj saying in his application. "I have voluntarily decided to withdraw the case, and no undue pressure or coercion has been exerted upon me in this regard," it added. Earlier in 2021, Kamboj had filed a complaint in the court alleging Nawab Malik had defamed him and his brother-in-law following the NCB raided a cruise ship in October 2021. In his complaint, Kamboj claimed that Nawab in his press conference on arresting several persons including actor Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan had 'purposefully and intentionally defamed' him and s brother-in-law Rishab Sachdev. NCP leader and ex-Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik alleged that Aryan Khan's arrest was a forgery. Kamboj had sought action against Malik for allegedly committing offences under sections 499 and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code.

EPS saying AIADMK will have majority win shows party's conflict with BJP: Thirumavalavan
VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan has seen an inherent conflict between the AIADMK and the BJP on whether they would form a coalition government, if they win next year's Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. 'While Union Home Minister Amit Shah is repeating there will be a coalition government, AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami has made it clear that his party will win with a majority (hinting it will form a single party rule),' he said. Addressing a public meeting at Melavalavu near Madurai on Monday to mark the anniversary of 'Melavalavu massacre', in which seven Scheduled Caste people, including panchayat president Murugesan, were murdered decades ago, he pointed to Mr. Palaniswami's statement that no party could gobble up the AIADMK, and said the AIADMK leader was referring to the BJP attempting to undermine his party. 'If it was about the DMK, he (Palaniswami) cannot say 'gobble up' as the DMK only thinks of defeating the AIADMK electorally. Only the BJP is planning to disrupt the opposition party to put it as a replacement,' he charged. Welcoming AIADMK's position of not losing their uniqueness in dealing with the BJP, he said the repeated instances showed that there was an ongoing conflict between them. He said everyone was preying upon the VCK to get a hint of disruption in the DMK alliance, but that would not happen as their alliance was to save the State from Hindutva organisations. Commenting on the Hindu Munnani's mocking video on former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai and Periyar E.V. Ramasamy during the recent Muruga Bhakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu in Madurai, Mr. Thirumavalavan said the 'Sangh' could never criticise or mock Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. 'Though everyone knows they have a hidden agenda, they try to portray B.R. Ambedkar as their guiding light,' he added. Starting from BJP's win in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party had been trying to alter the Constitution. 'Martyrs like Murugesan, who lost their life to the brutal violence staged by caste Hindus, fought for their right to become the panchayat president,' he added. Mr. Thirumavalavan said Murugesan stood for his rights despite being aware of the consequences. 'But our struggle should not just stop with winning a panchayat president seat, but it should expand to rule the country, that is when our struggle will have a meaning,' he said. The VCK, which was started as a social organisation, had never fallen for the offer of more seats in an alliance. The party's aim was not just to attain political power but to educate people and politicise them. 'When other parties can feel proud of winning seats and earning money, we can proclaim that we have politicised people about their rights and role in society,' Mr. Thirumavalavan added.
