After loss to Tigers, Twins make room for Royce Lewis' return by designating Jonah Bride

New York Times14 hours ago

DETROIT — Following Tarik Skubal's dominance on Sunday night, the Twins designated backup infielder Jonah Bride for assignment, presumably to make room for Royce Lewis.
A team source confirmed Bride was DFA'd by the Twins after a 3-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers, a contest controlled by Skubal. The American League's reigning Cy Young winner tied a career high with 13 strikeouts, and he and two relievers combined on a two-hit shutout.

Bride, who was acquired for cash in a trade from Miami on April 16, received hugs and handshakes from several coaches after manager Rocco Baldelli informed him of the decision.
The move properly aligns with the return of Lewis, who should be activated before the Twins open a three-game series at the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. Out since June 15 with a left hamstring strain, Lewis emerged healthy after appearing in a third consecutive rehab game for Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday afternoon.
Lewis played third base Sunday after operating as the team's designated hitter in the first two games. He went 0-for-8 with a walk and two strikeouts on his assignment.
Though he's struggled at the plate this season, the Twins could have used the potential right-handed thump from Lewis against Skubal, who retired the first 13 batters he faced before Ty France singled with one out in the fifth inning. The Twins were no match for Skubal, who struck out eight of the first nine batters he faced.

'He's (one of the) best pitchers, if not the best pitchers, in the game right now,' catcher Ryan Jeffers said. 'You try and come up with a good plan to try and attack your at-bats, but he's really good and has the ability of doing whatever. He can throw all changeups, and you're on the fastball — you go up on the fastball for an at-bat, and he uses all changeup or you go up there, 'Hey, I'm going to try to be on the changeup,' and then he'll just throw 99 at you. He does a really good job of not letting you find a pattern or get on one pattern or one pitch.'
Lewis, who's hitting .202/.282/.303 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 110 plate appearances, missed the Twins' first 35 games after straining the same left hamstring on March 16. Upon returning to the lineup on May 6, Lewis immediately struggled, going hitless in his first 15 at-bats. Though Lewis went nine for his next 30, he slumped again, this time going hitless in 32 at-bats, a streak which ended on June 4.

Right before his latest injury, Lewis finally found rhythm at the plate, going 11-for-28. He suffered the injury running down the line after hitting a single in a June 14 loss at Houston.
Despite his struggles at the plate, the Twins are 18-12 with Lewis in the lineup. The Twins are 22-32 when Lewis doesn't play.
Facing a slew of position player injuries in April, the Twins acquired Bride after the Marlins designated him for assignment. The Twins hoped they could help Bride rediscover the form that led him to hit .276/.357/.461 with 11 homers for Miami last season.
After making a slight adjustment with the positioning of his hands, Bride began his Twins tenure by going 7-for-14. However, with Brooks Lee, Kody Clemens and Lewis receiving the bulk of the playing time, at-bats became more sporadic for Bride, who only had eight hits in his last 58 at-bats for the Twins.
Bride gained far more notoriety for pitching in blowout losses. He worked in four games, allowing 10 earned runs and 14 hits in six innings.

EA Sports announces college basketball video game return targeting 2028 release: Source

Following the smashing success of the college football video game's revival, EA Sports is going to bring back the college basketball game after almost two decades away. The company announced the news Monday in a social media post. EA Sports last released a college basketball game in 2009. Bring the Madness. Let's run it back. #CBB #ItsInTheGame — EA SPORTS (@EASPORTS) June 30, 2025 The announcement came right as Extra Points reported about the game's impending return, based on documents obtained by the newsletter that noted the Collegiate Licensing Company had recommended accepting EA Sports' bid for the game over other game developers. The target date for a return is 2028, with both men's and women's teams in the game, according to Extra Points' Matt Brown. A source briefed on the matter confirmed that reporting to The Athletic. Advertisement The CLC, which handles branding licenses for the vast majority of schools, put out its Request For Proposal to game developers in November 2024 following the success of College Football 25. EA Sports was the only one to confirm it would include all Division I men's and women's teams that opted in, which would total 730 teams, as well as NIL money for players on each team in a standalone simulation game. Schools have until July 18 to approve being in the game, the source said. The plan would be similar to football, running NIL through OneTeam Partners, and EA would explore similar features to the College Football game, like Dynasty Mode, Team Builder, Road to Glory and Ultimate Team. The six-year proposal includes at least three games, beginning in 2028. It could produce six games in that time, but if it did not produce a game in a given year, teams and rosters would be updated in a downloadable patch. Similar to College Football, schools will be allocated more royalties based on how often their team is used. The history of the football and basketball video games are closely tied. The football game ceased publication after 2013 due to a lawsuit over use of name, image and likeness from Ed O'Bannon, a former UCLA basketball player who was portrayed on a historic team in NCAA Basketball '09. EA Sports said in a court filing at the time it was willing to pay the athletes, but the NCAA wouldn't allow it. However, even before the football game was discontinued, 2K Sports and EA Sports ceased development of their college basketball video games in 2008 and 2009, respectively, due to declining audience and sales. The college football video game always outpaced the basketball games by a 3:1 margin in sales. The most units a college basketball game sold was 370,000, while college football typically sold around 1 million. Advertisement However, when College Football 25 became the highest-selling sports video game ever in total dollars, after 11 years away, schools' appetite to make another game was there, and EA Sports jumped in. The reason for such a long delay between the game proposal and the game's release is how long it takes to acquire assets and create stadiums, jerseys, trophies and more. EA Sports announced the College Football return in 2021 but didn't release the game until 2024, which was a year later than initially planned, because of how long it took to build a new game from scratch. College Football 26 will be released on July 7. The Athletic asked EA Sports in January about the idea of bringing the college basketball game back. Senior vice president Daryl Holt wouldn't tip his hand, but noted the success of football had gotten a lot of attention. 'As developers, we try to figure out how we can get creative on reaching other aspects of sports, whether that be a smaller sport or one that doesn't have a game,' he said. '… We'll keep looking for those things, but as a developer and working in sports, you're always tapping your head going, what else could be possible?'
