Diogo Jota's childhood sweetheart wife, three young kids and tragic final promise

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Diogo Jota made a heartbreaking promise of 'forever' to his wife just days before the fatal car crash that claimed the life of the Liverpool football pro and his brother, leaving behind three young children
Liverpool star Diogo Jota was newly married to his childhood sweetheart when tragedy struck in a horrific car crash earlier this summer.

The talented footballer and his brother Andre tragically died in a car accident near the city of Zamora in Spain on July 3, and the football world has been in mourning ever since.

Diogo married his Rute Cardoso, 28, in a lavish ceremony on June 22, just days before his death. Sweet snaps show the loved-up couple with their three young children, blissfully unaware of the tragedy that lay before them.

Now, his wife and children will be present at Liverpool's Premier League opener this evening where the team will play against Bournemouth. It's thought the club will pay tribute to their late player, with them retiring the number 20 shirt in his memory.

Childhood sweethearts
Diogo Jota and Rute Cardoso first met in their teenage years in Porto, Portugal, having attended the same school. Friends and family watched as their relationship blossomed alongside Diogo's own rise through the footballing ranks.
From local youth clubs to making his mark in the Premier League, Rute was always by his side, a constant support during the pressures of professional sport.
Together, they built a family, welcoming three children over the years. Son Dinis was born in 2021, while Duarte was born in 2023. Their daughter arrived in November 2024.

Those close to the family described Diogo as a devoted father who cherished every moment with his children, sometimes sharing snaps with his followers online.
Dream wedding
After years together, the couple finally tied the knot on June 22, 2025, in an intimate ceremony in Porto. The wedding was attended by friends, family, and teammates who gathered to witness the union.

The couple shared glimpses of the special day on social media, with Diogo captioning a post, "A day we will never forget," and Rute responding, "My dream came true." The footballer replied, "But I'm the lucky one".
The wedding day itself was a picture of happiness, from their first dance to moments of quiet intimacy shared between the couple. It seemed to mark the beginning of the next chapter in their lives, but sadly 11 days later news broke of Diogo's fatal crash.

Stunning pictures shared via Instagram show the couple beaming from ear to ear in front of a church altar, with Rute looking breathtaking in an ivory dress and flowing veil.
In one photo, they are accompanied by their three young children. Another snap shows the couple emerging from the church amid a flurry of confetti, embarking on what should have been the first exciting steps of a long and happy life together.
Just 11 days after their wedding, Diogo and his brother André Silva were killed in a catastrophic car crash on Spain's A‑52 highway. Reports indicate that their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout, veered off the road, and caught fire, leaving no chance for escape.

Heartbreakingly, Diogo's final social media post was the couple's wedding video that was posted less than 24 hours before the accident.
Special vow to three children
Diogo is survived by two sons and a daughter who was born in December 2024. Just a month before his daughter arrived, the footballer opened up about mental health and family life in a video on his club's YouTube channel.
Sitting down with Lee Richardson, the club's performance psychologist, Diogo highlighted how football, being a team sport, can sometimes allow players to mask their feelings.

"As a team sport, you can sometimes hide or benefit from what the team is doing or not. And in those individual sports, like boxing, Olympians, [they're by] themselves. So when they are not good, you can clearly see something is wrong," he shared.
The doting father went on to discuss his children, explaining that even after being on the pitch all day, he had to be "on it" when he came home to his family. He shared: "When I go home after playing, I still have a family. I have two kids, three almost, and the dogs, and the stress, it doesn't stop.
In a poignant vow to his family, he said: "You want to be the best father you can be". The star added: "[You] try to lead by example, give him good feedback, even though sometimes you want to get a bit more rest in the afternoon, and they are all happy because you're finally at home and they want to play. I had this yesterday after the game. I wanted to get a bit of rest. One of my kids wanted to play some football and you need to be on it."

Wife's statement
The brothers had been heading to the Spanish port of Santander so Jota could return to Liverpool for pre-season training.
Their funeral took place in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto. Rute made her first statement following his death on the one month anniversary of their wedding, posting three pictures from their big day, including a close up of the pair holding hands.
She captioned the post: "1 month of our 'until death do us part'."

Peter Andre gushes over wife Emily after blistering Katie Price statement

Peter Andre took to social media over the weekend to pay tribute to his wife as she marks her latest birthday - with his compliments coming days after he threatened to expose ex-wife Katie Price's 'lies' Peter Andre made a gushing tribute to his wife, Emily - amid his explosive fall out with ex-wife Katie Price. Drama has been thrown on the Andre family after Pete lashed out at his troubled ex - accusing her of peddling lies about their family dynamic for years. ‌ But over the weekend, he pushed the tension to one side to make his day all about his doctor wife, Doctor Emily Andre, who turned 36. Pop singer Peter, 52, and occasional TV star Emily have been an item since 2012. ‌ They married in 2015 and have three children together: Amelia, 11, Theodore James, 8, and one-year-old Arabella Rose. Emily is also stepmother to Peter's two oldest kids: 20-year-old son Junior and 18-year-old daughter Princess. ‌ READ MORE: Katie Price's cryptic response to Peter Andre statement in full as she calls herself a 'sinner' On Saturday, Peter made it clear that he and his family adore his wife, sharing a collection of images of her on his Instagram feed, which he also pinned to the top of his page. He gushed in an accompanying statement: "Happy Birthday, Emily. We love you beyond words." The cover image showed Emily flashing a beaming smile while wearing an elegant evening dress and dripping in jewels. While further snaps showed Peter proudly posing alongside her on various sun-soaked holidays. The touching snaps came just days after Peter sensationally lashed out at Katie, 47, after she hinted she had been blocked from taking part in a recent documentary about daughter Princess. The star then went on to suggest Peter join her on her podcast so they could clear the air over their relationship as co-parents. But reacting furiously to the proposal, Peter wrote in a stinging social media post: "For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today. ‌ "The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before, out of respect for my children. "In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases found my ex-wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise to me and my management. The same falsehoods are being repeated today. Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months." His threat came after Katie previously claimed she was "very, very upset" over being excluded from taking part in an ITV documentary about her oldest daughter. ‌ Speaking on her podcast last week, Katie proposed a face-to-face discussion with Peter and her former management The CAN Group, stating: "I feel like I've missed out on so much and it's so not fair to bring Princess as piggy in the middle so I think it's about time all of us adults just sit down and talk about what their beef is with me and just get over it. Life would be such more at peace." She also expressed wishes for herself and Peter to back their children together. Katie proposed: "There's no reason why both parents can't be there to support her." But her suggestion was met with an unexpected rejection from Peter, who is now threatening to leak truths about the nature of their relationship from the past 16 years. Katie has three other children - with eldest son Harvey, 23, from a past romance with footballer Dwigth Yorke. Her two youngest kids, 11-year-old Bunny and 12-year-old Jett, are from her third marriage, which was with Kieran Hayler. The former couple were married from 2013 until their divorce in 2021.

Chelsea owners attacked by Strasbourg ultras as angry statement calls for 'abuse' to end

Todd Boehly and BlueCo haven't been popular at Strasbourg since an investment in the club arrived in 2023, with Chelsea's owners coming under renewed pressure from fans Strasbourg have welcomed a number of Chelsea players, both on loan and in permanent deals, since investment arrived from the Premier League side's owners BlueCo. Fans have been against the situation from the start, though, and continue to voice their frustrations at the start of the new Ligue 1 season. ‌ Kendry Paez and Mike Penders are among the Chelsea players to join Strasbourg on loan this summer as the French side prepare for European football. Fan group The Ultra Boys 90 remain angry, though, and attacked the higher-ups from Todd Boehly's group in a fresh statement while calling for footballing authorities to intervene. ‌ "The transfer window carried out so far proves to the point of absurdity that Racing [the club's full name is Racing Club Strasbourg Alsace] is no longer a club that makes decisions in its own interest," the statement read, as translated by Goal. "On the contrary, we are witnessing a headlong rush where Chelsea is calling the shots to the detriment of our club's independence. ‌ "The problem with timeshare ownership is profound; it's a destructive logic that transforms historic clubs into interchangeable parts of a globalised portfolio, and this system is becoming widespread. Our legislators must quickly address this issue to put an end to the abuses it causes. "We have always defended a deeply rooted, grassroots football, driven by vibrant stands and a unique history. Today, they are trying to impose a model on us where clubs are run like fast-food franchises. The current good results must not blind us or interfere in our fight, which goes far beyond the culture of the moment and short-term visions of what Racing offers on the pitch." Strasbourg finished seventh in Ligue 1 last term, and were in contention for Champions League qualification until late in the season. However, this hasn't changed the fan group's feelings. "What is happening within our club is too serious for us to pretend that everything is fine in the face of authentic football, which is dying," they added. "We will continue to denounce all the excesses of timeshare ownership and interference in our club." The feelings are consistent with comments made when investment arrived back in 2023. "Between the multi-club ownership that we can never accept and the destructive sporting policy, it is now time to say things clearly: BlueCo is not welcome at the Meinau and never will be," the same fan group said at the time. ‌ Strasbourg won their Ligue 1 opener on Sunday, beating Metz 1-0. Penders started in goal and Paez came off the bench, but it was another new signing - Argentine forward Joaquin Panichelli - who scored the winner. Liam Rosenior's side will now take on Brondby in the Conference League before returning to league action against Nantes on Sunday. Danish outfit Brondby overcame a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Vikingur Rejkjavik of Iceland to book their place in the play-off.
