Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Hikes Journalists' Pension To Rs 15,000 Ahead Of Polls
This announcement comes months before the Legislative Assembly elections in Bihar, expected to be held in October or November this year.
Ahead of the Bihar assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday announced a significant hike in monthly pension benefits under the 'Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme' for all eligible journalists and their spouses.
Making the announcement on X, CM said that the concerned department has been asked to increase the monthly pension amount for all eligible journalists from the existing Rs 6,000 to Rs 15,000.
'I am pleased to inform that under the 'Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme', instructions have been given to the department to provide a monthly pension of Rs 15,000 instead of Rs 6,000 to all eligible journalists. Additionally, in the event of the death of journalists receiving a pension under the 'Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme', instructions have been given to provide their dependent spouse with a monthly pension of Rs 10,000 instead of Rs 3,000 for their lifetime," Chief Minister Kumar posted on X.
The Chief Minister also emphasised the significance of journalists in a democratic society, referring to them as the fourth pillar of democracy and underscoring their crucial contribution to social development.
He said, 'Journalists play a crucial role in democracy. They are the fourth pillar of democracy and have a significant role in social development. We have been taking care of journalists' facilities from the beginning so that they can perform their journalism impartially and live with dignity after retirement."
Notably, this announcement comes months before the Legislative Assembly elections in Bihar, expected to be held in October or November this year. However, the Election Commission has yet to announce the dates.
Meanwhile, the political battle between the ruling NDA and opposition Mahagathbandhan has intensified in the state and at the Centre, months ahead of the elections, over the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls.
The SIR of the electoral rolls in Bihar has sparked a major controversy in the country, with the opposition INDIA bloc alleging that it will eliminate a significant portion of voters.
Earlier on Friday, the Election Commission of Bihar announced that 99.8 per cent of the state's electors have been covered under the ongoing Special Integrated Revision (SIR) process, according to the polling agency's statement.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar confirmed that forms of over 7.23 crore electors have been received and digitised, with their names set to be included in the Draft Electoral Roll, scheduled for release on August 1, 2025, added the statement.

"Surrender Fake EPIC Card By August 16": Poll Body Sets Deadline For Tejashwi Yadav
Patna: The Election Commission on Friday told RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav that it was a crime to forge and use a bogus government document and set a deadline for him to submit his "apparently fake" Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) by August 16. A fresh letter was issued to the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar assembly by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Patna (Sadar) cum Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for Digha assembly constituency in this regard. The Official had last week written to the former Deputy CM, urging him to 'hand over for investigation' the voter card which he claimed to possess despite it having been 'not issued officially'. In the latest letter, the ERO said that a perusal of the voters list for the past several years has led to the conclusion that the EC had never issued the voter card with the EPIC number quoted by Yadav. "It appears that the aforementioned EPIC card is fake. Forging and using a bogus government document in the eyes of the law is a crime. You are once again requested to surrender your apparently fake EPIC card by 16/08/2025 till 5 pm," the letter read. Yadav had in a press conference on August 2 and said that a search conducted with his EPIC number was yielding the result 'no records found' in the draft electoral rolls prepared as part of Special Intensive Revision (SIR). When the claim was rejected by the District Administration in Patna, Yadav alleged that his EPIC number had been 'changed'. Later, Yadav admitted that he did have the voter ID card with the EPIC number quoted by the officials, but sought to blame them for issuance of two EPIC cards in his favour.
