MasterChef loses nearly 1 million viewers as Gregg Wallace and John Torode return

Daily Mirror3 days ago
BBC One's MasterChef lost nearly one million viewers during its return last night, marking the final series with hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode following their recent sacking
MasterChef has lost almost one million viewers as fans snubbed the BBC One programme after the firing of John Torode and Gregg Wallace. The show's latest series premiered on BBC One last night, marking the last with Torode and Wallace after their recent misconduct scandal.
Torode's contract was not renewed by production company Banijay UK after it was alleged that he used racist language, whilst his co-star Gregg was fired from the programme after 41 of the 83 complaints against him were upheld by an investigation into his conduct. Despite the scandal, the BBC aired its 21st series, which was filmed before Torode and Wallace were let go from the programme.
It has now been revealed that just under two million people watched the show's premiere on Wednesday, according to BBC News. This means that the show has lost almost a million viewers since last year, after last year's premiere brought in 2.7 million viewers. It comes after reports Gregg Wallace is trying to 'earn a living' after MasterChef exit amid 'battle every day'.
Wednesday saw the show return but with major changes as last minute edits were made to the series in light of the scandal. Both presenters appeared in the introduction shots of the first episode, however their screen time was massively reduced compared to the previous series.
BBC bosses have begun to airbrush them out of MasterChef - removing any promotional pictures of them and reducing their screen time. Neither presenter is mentioned in the descriptions for the three available episodes.
Those who did tune in took to X to say that they were switching off as they made the same complaint about the programme. One viewer wrote on X: "I shall tune in to this for 10 or 15 minutes just to see how it has been re-cut to remove its presenters," before adding just minutes later: "Well I've switched it off. The @BBC has made no attempt to remove them from the show."
A second said: "We have also switched off Master chef. I can't bear to watch. Of course they could have edited the presenters out and had some sort of voice over."
Earlier today, a PR specialist revealed that Torode has "one chance" to save his career after the scandal. Kayley Cornelius told The Mirror: "Should he take accountability for his actions, apologise to those he's upset or disappointed, and demonstrate clear growth since the time of the incident, I do believe, based on current online sentiment, that he has a chance to win back some public support."

Antiques Roadshow's Fiona Bruce makes announcement minutes into show

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info During the latest episode of Antiques Roadshow, viewers witnessed host Fiona Bruce deliver a special announcement just minutes into the programme. As the BBC programme commenced, which recently saw one item get a huge valuation, audiences observed footage from the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, home to more than 400 memorials honouring those who served in the armed forces and civilian organisations. A voiceover from Fiona could be heard before she appeared on screen as she said: "On the 8th of May 1945, celebrations broke out across the country to mark the end of the Second World War in Europe. "But for many, this was just the beginning of the end. Germany and Italy may have been defeated, but the war against Japan was to rage on for another three months." The BBC presenter outlined that the programme was visiting Staffordshire for this special edition, exploring tales from WWII in what was then referred to as the far east, reports the Express. (Image: BBC) Nevertheless, before the show properly commenced, Fiona revealed there would be a significant format alteration from what viewers are accustomed to. She said: "Given the very personal and moving stories you're going to hear, our experts won't be offering any valuations on the items you'll be seeing. "To the owners, these things are priceless, and they offer a poignant insight into some of the darkest events of our past." Meanwhile, the BBC presenter detailed how the conflict in the Far East and the Second World War concluded following the deployment of the 'ultimate weapon', the atomic bomb. (Image: BBC) Fiona continued: "Two atomic bombs were dropped by the US on the Japanese mainland in August 1945. "Since then, victory over Japan, or VJ Day, has been marked on August 15. 80 years on in a special commemorative episode, we'll relive key moments from the conflict, through the items you've shared with us." Throughout the programme, expert Siobhan Tyrrell became fascinated when speaking to two gentlemen about the 'rare' artefact they owned, which had been preserved by a serviceman stationed in Burma at the outbreak of hostilities. The pair possessed an original newspaper cutting from the Rangoon Gazette, printed the day following the Japanese assault on the American naval fleet at Pearl Harbor. (Image: BBC) Keen to understand how they acquired the piece, one gentleman revealed they discovered it amongst their late father's belongings, explaining that he had never discussed his wartime experiences with them. He disclosed that his father served with the RAF and was deployed to Burma from 1941. The sons also uncovered that within their father's effects was a photographic album chronicling his complete wartime journey. Siobhan remarked: "Isn't it great that he managed to keep this! I can't imagine that there are many that have survived and it's just an amazing record." Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Emmerdale fans shocked to discover top music star once appeared on ITV soap

Emmerdale fans have been shocked to find out that a famous singer once appeared on the ITV soap a decade ago, just before he found mainstream success in music Emmerdale fans have been left shocked after learning that a top music star once appeared on the ITV soap more than a decade ago. In 2015, Dominic Richard Harrison signed up to play the part of Matt, wh o had a short stay in the fictional Yorkshire village as a potential love interest for Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper). ‌ Two years after his stint on the ITV programme, Dominic had reinvented himself under the stage name of Yungblud, and has since released four albums, the latest of which was titled Idols and came out in June. But upon discovering the truth, Emmerdale fans flooded social media with their reactions. ‌ One wrote on X: "How did I not notice him!!" whilst another said: "Right petition for Dom to get back to the village.". A third penned: "@Yungblud how didn't I notice you in emmerdale" and a fourth simply said: "This is so cute." It comes after ITV makes major decision on I'm A Celebrity's future after talks with officials. ‌ The following year, Yungblud starred in the Disney series The Lodge, which functioned as a musical and mystery drama that centred on the life of Skye Hart (Sophie Simnett), a teenage girl who relocates to rural Northern Ireland when her father takes over the North Star hotel. The musician had a recurring role as Oz, a singer who featured as a love interest for the character of Kaylee (Jade Alleyne). His roles in Emmerdale and The Lodge are so far his only two credited acting roles, but Yungblud is not the only singer to have started out on a soap opera. Spice Girls star Mel B appeared as Bettabuys worker Amy Nelson in Coronation Street in 1993, having been drafted in to film a single scene as the character when original actress Louise Duprey decided to suddenly quit. ‌ In the years that followed, Mel enjoyed major success alongside Geri Halliwell, Melanie C, Emma Bunton and Victoria Beckham as part of the world's best-selling girl band in history. What's more, her bandmate Emma, who was known as Baby Spice, had appeared as a mugger in BBC soap EastEnders before finding global fame. Before finding success as part of The 1975, Matty Healy appeared as an extra in the first series of Waterloo Road when his mother Denise Welch starred as hapless French teacher Steph Haydock. Louis Tomlinson was also seen on the BBC school drama in the years before he shot to fame as part of One Direction. And Sam Fender, now best known for hits such as Seventeen Going Under and Hypersonic Missiles, appeared in an episode of the detective series Vera. At the time, he joked: "I got killed in the first ever episode of that ITV detective programme called Vera set in the North East. I lasted like 10 seconds, I think.' For Yungblud, the news comes just hours after he was hailed the new Prince of Darkness thanks to his close friendship with the late Ozzy Osbourne. He said: 'I want to achieve what Ozzy did. He was a great inspiration to me.' Ozzy and Doncaster-born star Dom, became friends after the Brummie rocker appeared in the video for Yungblud's song The Funeral in 2022. ‌ The pair bonded over their shared love of music and their rebellious nature, with Ozzy gifting Dom one of his famous crucifix necklaces. Yungblud was among huge bands such as Metallica and Guns N' Roses who performed at Black Sabbath's final gig at Villa Park in Birmingham on July 5. He gave a heartfelt rendition of Changes, the No1 hit Ozzy recorded with daughter Kelly in 2003, to the 45,000-strong before Ozzy's death, Dom hinted he was working with Sabbath star and at a possible secret recording with his mentor, saying: 'There is a lot in the works as me and Ozzy are friends.' The wild man of rock died aged 76 on July 22 at home in Buckinghamshire after suffering a cardiac arrest. Dom was among big names from the music world, such as Sir Elton John, James Hetfield of Metallica and Marilyn Manson, who attended Ozzy's funeral in Birmingham on July 30.
