27 Actors Hollywood Tried To Convince Us Were "Ugly"

Buzz Feed4 days ago
Recently, Reddit user Self-Aware-Dinosaur pointed out the classic trope of "movies where the obviously attractive actress is made to look ugly before the glamorous makeover," and people chimed in with their own examples. Casting unattainably gorgeous actors in "ugly" or "plain" roles — with or without the makeover — is frustratingly common in Hollywood, and only serves to reinforce impossible beauty standards. Don't believe me? Check out these gorgeous actors Hollywood actually tried to convince us were unattractive.
Laney from She's All That (played by Rachel Leigh Cook)
Suggested by u/Self-Aware-DinosaurThis is the most classic example, because all they do to make Jamie look "pretty" is put her hair down and take off her glasses...which kinda feels like it would give all young girls with glasses a complex. In what way could Rachel Leigh Cook ever be ugly because of glasses, and why are glasses even "ugly" to begin with? Dean really thought that Laney was the LEAST likely to be made beautiful and popular?
Mia from The Princess Diaries (played by Anne Hathaway)
Suggested by u/DVM11All they do is put makeup on Mia, take off her glasses, and straighten her hair!!! Again, CURLY HAIR IS NOT UGLY, and neither are glasses! She mainly looks better after because she's not making weird faces like in the before photos. It's always so funny to me when people react so wildly at school when she shows her new hair. And Anne Hathaway is obviously gorgeous, no matter what her hair looks like.
Allison in The Breakfast Club (played by Ally Sheedy)
Velma in Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (played by Linda Cardellini)
Suggested by u/Benji_1984Cardellini is drop-dead gorgeous, and it's so funny to see them try to pass her off as unattractive and geeky. Even in her Velma outfit, she's pretty. Then, of course, in the second film, she transforms into a latex-wearing bombshell, and you're like, well, yeah, it's Linda Cardellini. Of course she's hot. (Side note: how did her hair grow between scenes???)
Bianca in The DUFF (played by Mae Whitman)
Suggested by u/PilzoyzThis one pisses me off so much. In what world is Mae Whitman the "designated ugly fat friend"??? I know Wesley says this doesn't always actually mean "ugly fat friend" but the fact that they frame Mae as this kind of character is the kind of thing that makes teenage girls everywhere feel really, really shitty about themselves.
Tai in Clueless (played by Brittany Murphy)
Suggested by u/corndogz99This is yet another example of Hollywood putting a beautiful woman in an outfit that isn't super femme, giving her curly hair, and not having her wear a lot of makeup, then saying that she's ugly or "tragic." Justice for curly-haired women everywhere!!! At least they did keep her hair curly.
Kate in John Tucker Must Die (played by Brittany Snow)
I always found this one so funny, especially because Kate's "makeover" to become hot literally just includes...straightening her hair. That is IT. There's a whole plot about how Kate is insecure because her mom is so hot, but like...she's Brittany Snow. Why was she cast as the "invisible" girl who's always overlooked or seen as a loser?
Art3mis/Samantha in Ready Player One (played by Olivia Cooke)
Gretchen in Mean Girls (played by Lacey Chabert)
Gretchen is established to be the "not pretty" one of the three by Regina. Now, Regina is maybe just being mean, but because she has no qualms calling Karen pretty, it seems like she actually believes Gretchen isn't. Except...Gretchen is gorgeous? She has brown curly hair compared to Regina and Karen's blonde straight hair, but other than that, I honestly can't figure out why Regina would suggest she's ugly. It's bizarre.
And also Janice (played by Lizzy Caplan)
Suggested by u/vjhcLizzy naturally has a very hot girl look, and their solution to making her "ugly" and weird was basically just hair gel and a lot of eyeliner. Sometimes I feel like Hollywood thinks "edgy" means unattractive. This is plenty of people's type.
Needy in Jennifer's Body (played by Amanda Seyfried)
Suggested by u/CheeseishI always find it funny when an actor plays the hot character in one movie, and then the awkward nerdy one in another. She's established as the "prettiest" one by Regina in Mean Girls, but here, Seyfried plays the nerdy Needy, who plays second-fiddle to Jennifer. Except she looks exactly the same as she does in Mean Girls, save for glasses and somewhat frumpy clothing. They do her dirty with her prom dress, but overall...she's still the gorgeous Amanda Seyfried.
Gracie in Miss Congeniality (played by Sandra Bullock)
Suggested by u/RyanKFace25They make the makeover scene look wildly intense, as if they basically have to re-engineer Gracie's entire body and face, and then she looks exactly the same after except she has straight hair and is wearing makeup. This only proves the point that Gracie was beautiful from the beginning — I mean, she's played by Sandra Bullock. Sure, she didn't have great table manners, but acting like Bullock is unthinkable as a beauty queen is completely unrealistic.
Natalie in House Bunny... (played by Emma Stone)
None of the Zetas were ugly, and some of them were straight-up gorgeous — like Emma Stone. I'm sorry, there's just no way I am ever going to see Emma Stone as the weird ugly girl, even dressed the way she is above. She just ends up looking like a hot librarian.
...and Skeeter in The Help (also played by Emma Stone)
This is another funny one where they don't even bother to change Stone's appearance in this flashback scene where she talks about boys calling her ugly. Her hair's just up. And in the rest of the movie, she's established as a misfit/the "loser" amongst the girls, even though appearance-wise, the only difference is that she has curly hair. She does get kind of a makeover moment where her hair is in a more traditional '60s style, but even before that, she stands out as completely gorgeous. I have a hard time believing boys at school called her ugly.
Josie in Never Been Kissed (played by Drew Barrymore)
Suggested by Sweaty-Jellyfish8461Ah, another tool for making a gorgeous actor look "ugly" — braces. Yes, Josie's fashion is terrible when she returns to school, and she's awkward, but it's still funny to see Barrymore playing someone unattractive when she's literally a Charlie's Angel.
Elphaba in Wicked (played by Cynthia Erivo)
Yeah, yeah, I know that the point is that she's green, which makes her ugly – not that her looks are bad. But she still has the classic makeover scene, where Galinda just has her wear her hair slightly back, and Fiyero makes a comment about how she's changed to fit in. Except..she looks exactly the same. Cynthia Erivo is gorgeous no matter what, too.
Carrie from the 2013 Carrie (played by Chloë Grace Moretz)
Suggested by u/thorn_95Moretz is so poorly cast in this role. I understand Carrie's issue is more that she's wildly sheltered and strange, but it still feels out of place to put what looks like a pouty Instagram model in the role.
And, for that matter, Carrie from the original 1976 Carrie (played by Sissy Spacek)
Suggested by u/natetheskate100At least Spacek plays the "sheltered freak" type of character with MUCH more realism, and her wide-eyed, sort of spacey look works out...but Spacek is still, obviously, gorgeous. It shouldn't be such a surprise that she looks pretty in the prom scene.
Sam in Sixteen Candles (played by Molly Ringwald)
Molly Ringwald played a plain, overlooked character pretty close in time to when she played an It Girl in The Breakfast Club, despite the fact that she looks basically the same in both roles. They even have the same hairdo. Ringwald is obviously gorgeous, as she is portrayed to be in The Breakfast Club, so it's ridiculous that she's supposed to be someone the romantic lead would never even look at in this film.
Aimee in The Spectacular Now (played by Shailene Woodley)
Aimee is supposed to be kind of invisible and not get romantic attention (though this is partly in her head)...except she's played by Shailene Woodley. Woodley is also portrayed as someone who would be easy for Ben to get to have sex with him in The Secret Life of the American Teenager because she isn't as pretty or popular as Grace or Adrian. I don't know why multiple projects made Woodley's characters out to be plain, because Woodley is the opposite of plain.
Sam in A Cinderella Story (played by Hilary Duff)
Again, this may just be an example of a mean character being mean, but Sam is definitely established as the overlooked, non-popular girl when she's played by Hilary Duff. She doesn't even really change her appearance for the dance — she just dons a mask over her eyes and wears her hair up. It's not even like she's prettier because she's in more makeup; most of her makeup is hidden by the mask!
...and the ugly stepsisters (played by Madeline Zima and Andrea Avery)
They look like completely normal teenage girls and aren't ugly by any means. Yet they're the butt of the joke and it's mocked that Austin would ever see one of them as Cinderella. Well...yes, considering they look nothing like the girl he met, but otherwise either one of them could've dressed up as Cinderella and looked just as glam.
Hermione in the Harry Potter series...(played by Emma Watson)
Hermione was supposed to be this buck-toothed, frizzy-haired girl, and then...they cast Emma Watson. They literally just gave up on trying to make her look like Hermione (i.e., with frizzy hair) by the third film. Although I will say, even the books fall victim to this trope. All she does at the Yule Ball is smooth her hair, and Harry doesn't even recognize her because she looks so pretty.
...and also Pansy Parkinson (played by Scarlett Byrne)
I know she's a minor character, but I still was shocked when I realized Scarlett Byrne was meant to play Pansy, especially after I saw her in The Vampire Diaries. Pansy is described as "pug-faced" a million times in the series, and then she's played by a literal Playboy Model.
Nadine from The Edge of Seventeen (played by Hailee Steinfeld)
I love this movie, but right from the start, they try to make us believe Nadine is ugly and that's just preposterous. Sure, they give her an awful haircut in the first few minutes, but she's still Hailee Steinfeld, and it makes no sense to keep suggesting she's not as pretty as Haley Lu Richardson. Also, Mr. Bruner keeps making comments about her horrible fashion, when she seems to dress like a completely normal high schooler to me. Her hair is even nicely curled and done-up the whole movie.
Katie in She's Out of Control (played by Ami Dolenz)
Suggested by strumpetsarefunThis is another older one, but basically, Katie gets a makeover at age 15 and starts getting more male attention, much to the chagrin of her father. I haven't seen the film, but from the photos, this is yet another example of an actor putting their hair down and taking their glasses off, and everyone acting like she's gotten a face transplant overnight.
And finally, Jamie from A Walk to Remember (played by Mandy Moore)
We'll end on another example of a star who played the popular girl in one film (The Princess Diaries) and the nerdy wallflower in another. Jamie is gorgeous from the start of the film, and she basically looks exactly the same in the scene where she sings and everyone notices her (in a notable example, they actually curl her hair this time for the magic, "now she's pretty!" scene). I know this scene is about her singing talent, too, but still. Landon (and their other classmates) really didn't realize she was beautiful before???
Now it's your turn — what other characters do movie and TV shows try to convince us are ugly, when really they're far from it? Let us know in the comments!

Katie Price apologised to daughter Princess over her heartbreak

Moving scenes on ITV's The Princess Diaries set to air on August 10 Princess Andre has revealed her mum, Katie Price, said sorry to her over the messy fallout from the Kieran Hayler divorce. The 18-year-old famous offspring invited the cameras into her life with the fly-on-the-wall documentary, The Princess Diaries, where she has the opportunity to share a more vulnerable side. Wearing her heart on her sleeve in the first episode, which is due to air on August 10, she spoke about the moment her mum apologised to her. Price was married to Hayler from 2013, and they separated in 2018 when it emerged he had cheated on the former glamour model. In the years they were together, they raised their two children — Jett and Bunny — as well as Price's older children — Princess, Junior and Harvey. Looking back on those five years, Princess said they had grown "close" to Hayler. "We loved him," she told the cameras. Price and Hayler's break-up played out very publicly in the newspaper headlines. The Princess Diaries reminded viewers of one of those hard-hitting headlines: Katie Price hit breaking point and attempted suicide after Kieran Hayler split. Speaking from the heart, Princess said her mother went through a "dark time". "I wouldn't say I'm fully recovered from it," she said. However, the influencer said her mum has "fixed" herself after the breakdown of her third marriage and apologised to her for the impact it had on her. Now Princess is older, she has become best friends with her mum and they do a lot together. "Mum is such a different person," she explained. "She's genuinely really fixed herself. She spoke to me about this. I realised that I should never, she apologised, I never wanted an apology from her. It was a lot that she acknowledged it: 'you are my kids and I love you and I need to prioritise you'. We are so close now. We do a lot together. I love her. She's my best friend." The Princess Diaries' main star explained Price hadn't dealt with the break up well because she was "heartbroken". "She went through a dark time," she said. "It was hard me for adult-y thing you shouldn't have to go through [as a child]. Everything that happened the press picked up on, they would write stories constantly. I would go into school asking me questions about it cos they'd seen it in the papers. I would get into bed and cry." Princess kept how she was truly feeling from her dad Peter Andre because of her parents' ongoing feud. She said: "I would never go speak to my dad about it. I'd grown up knowing my mum and dad don't like each other." Due to this feud, Price has been banned from filming The Princess Diaries. Princess had to move out of her house (albeit temporarily) so she could live full-time at her dad Andre's home for filming. Although Price was banned from the show, Princess found a way to get her involved by asking her mum to film a voice note for her. The Princess Diaries airs on ITV2 and ITVX on Sunday.

Princess Andre's changing relationship with Katie Price as she's banned from ITV series

The spotlight will be on the 18-year-old for her new reality series, The Princess Diaries Princess Andre has a close bond with Katie Price but her mum has been barred from appearing on her ITV series, The Princess Diaries. She is the second child of exes Peter Andre, 52, and Price, 47, who famously haven't got on since their headline-grabbing divorce in 2009. Now the aspiring model, 18, is stepping into the spotlight with her own fly-on-the-wall reality series, much like Katie & Peter, which made her parents millionaires. But her famous mum won't be appearing on the ITV show; on the other hand, her dad and her step-mum Emily will be in the background alongside her brother Junior. Although Price doesn't star in the show, Princess has lots to say about her mother whom she loves. The reality star discussed their relationship and how it has changed as she got older. "Me and my mum now, we're so close more like best friends," she said. "I'll tell her anything, she'll tell me anything." Price not appearing on The Princess Diaries is not a result of her own relationship with Price, which Princess has said is ever-changing. "As you get older, you have a different type of bond," Princess said on her mum's Channel 4 series Katie Price: Making Babies, which aired in January this year. "It is not a mummy and daughter bond anymore, it is more of a grown-up bond." As she makes her own way in the spotlight, Princess has said she relies on her mum Price to give her "good advice"; she looks to her mum especially when it comes to the make-up and beauty world. She told OK! magazine in June: "With business stuff, they both know what to look for. Mum has had beauty ranges before so she's been helpful and I'm still hoping to do a lot more brand-work and music, and I trust my dad's opinion on all of that." Changes to the mother-daughter relationship Princess made a few changes to her relationship with her mum for the ITV series, including moving out of her home. Mother-of-five Price said that her oldest daughter was living primarily at her dad's because she was filming. She told The Katie Price Show podcast earlier in July: "Princess was living with me but because she's doing her documentary, and I'm not even allowed to breathe near the documentary, she has been predominantly staying at her dad's while she is filming." However, the former glamour model said this won't be a permanent move and she's expecting her daughter to come back once the cameras have finished filming. The mother-of-five added: "It's only because she has been filming that she has been at Pete's because obviously I'm not allowed anywhere near it. She has only got about two weeks left of filming... I'm that kind of mum where I have to make sure my kids have bedrooms if they want it, you never know do you." Due to filming, Price was also banned from her daughter's 18th birthday party. The famous offspring previously told OK! magazine that she would be celebrating with her mum Price privately instead, suggesting they would have a nice dinner together. Now that Princess is 18 years old, Price would love to take her daughter out on the town. "Officially, Mummy and Princess can go out together. Isn't it?" Price previously said on The Katie Price Show podcast. Princess Andre has admitted she is not into wild parties. She told The Sunday Mirror's Notebook magazine: "I'm not really a big drinker or a big party-goer, but it'll be nice to be able to go to pubs and stuff with my friends."

Katie Price involved in daughter Princess' ITV show despite filming ban

Princess didn't want her mum to miss out completely on filming for her reality series, The Princess Diaries Katie Price's daughter Princess has found a fun way to include her mum in her ITV series, The Princess Diaries, after she was banned from making an appearance. The Princess Diaries shines a spotlight on the famous offspring as she wants to make a name for herself in the spotlight in her own right. Her famous mum Price was banned from appearing on the fly-on-the-wall documentary, meaning her daughter had to move out of her house (albeit temporarily). But Princess, 18, didn't want her mum to completely miss out. The influencer had a fun way to get her mum in her series, regardless of the ban. She decided to ask both her parents, Price and Peter Andre, who was the naughtiest child via voice note. Recording her message, she said: "Hey mum, me and Junior are having a discussion. We wanna know." Junior replied: "Who was the naughtiest kid growing up? Out of me and Princess. If you respond… It's going to be filmed." Princess gave her mum some advice. She said: "Keep it PG! Love you." The teenager admitted her mum's household was "chaotic... in a good way... in a funny way" growing up. Junior said there were "lots of rules" at their dad's house. Katie Price has her say on The Princess Diaries Price wasn't going to miss out on the opportunity on playing a part in her daughter's reality series so she doesn't wait long to reply. "So who was the naughtiest child?" She said cheekily in a filmed voice note response. "Well, you was a mummy's girl. So you used to push me more and probably get away with things." The former glamour model decided it was indeed Princess who was the naughtiest because she could be just like herself. "So yeah, i'd probably say you were more naughty actually," she said. "You were still very much like me. But you were different. You're more sensible. The answer to your question, you was more naughty." Then playfully she shouted down the phone recording: "YOU NAUGHTY GIRL." After the heartwarming message, Princess decided she wanted to give her mum a call in real-time. Price answered the phone in Dubai but Princess hung up in a panic. Her mum appeared topless on camera — although you see nothing in the reality series. "Love you, bye!" Princess told her. "She had her boobs out!" She explained. "She's there casually out of the shower topless, she doesn't care. I was like 'Oh my god. I could never answer the phone'. She'll be like, 'You're with people?' When I answer the phone, she's so unpredictable. She lives life. She doesn't care." Princess shared she admired her mum's carefree attitude in life. "I really, really look up to that," she said. "I would love to have that mindset: I don't care." However, she admitted: "Deep down, I do care. I'll go to my bed and cry and cry. On my own, I don't handle it well. To other people I handle it well." Why is Katie Price banned from The Princess Diaries? Price was banned from filming with her daughter in the documentary series. It meant she was unable to attend her daughter's 18th birthday party because it took place in front of the cameras. Andre's management, CAN Associates, is behind the documentary; the same company that represented Price when the famous exes were in a relationship. CAN worked on the ITV reality series Katie and Peter that made the exes millions at the time. After the break up, Price has been locked in a feud with Andre and his management. Sometimes their fights have played out very publicly in the headlines. ITV has no comment on Price being banned from the series. Price spoke about being banned from the series in episode "A First Class B****" on The Katie Price Show podcast with her younger sister Sophie. At the same time, she appeared to take aim at Andre and his management. She said: "Of course, Mummy wasn't invited [to the 18th birthday for Princess] because it was for filming... The fact there is stuff my daughter is doing but I'm not allowed to be seen in any of it because it's for filming, then certain people who are filming her used to be in charge of my filming. "That's all I'm saying on it. That's fine. Conflict of interest. People will cotton on to it. So yeah, we've got to do something for Princess' 18th. I did say, did she want a blow-up club in the garden? But she's like nah." The Princess Diaries airs on ITV2 and ITVX on Sunday.
