‘Why has India's feminist movement not spoken on Savitribai Phule as yet?': Kancha Ilaiah

The Hindu26-04-2025

Raising questions on the BJP's efforts to renegotiate with the ideologies of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Dalit rights activist Kancha Ilaiah said that the government's perceived tacit support to the recent Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) action against 'Phule' movie will hurt the OBCs, which the ruling party cannot afford.
He also raised questions on India's feminist movement for not taking a public stance against the objections taken about the portrayal of Savitribai Phule.

'Here is a woman leader, a woman social reformer who had no parallel in India. I'm still waiting for the entire feminist response to Savitribai's portrayal. After the controversy over the film, I have not seen large feminist groups talk about it,' he said. He was speaking to The Hindu in an exclusive interview on the background of the recent release of 'Phule', the biopic on Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule.
'Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule did not just work for the education of the Dalit and Brahmin women, contributing to the social reform movement, but they changed the socio-political and economic ideas of India,' he said, adding that the couple was revolutionary in many ways, in their personal as well as social lives; and that Mahatma Phule's contribution was to start the discourse on labour, agriculture and farmers through his writings in 19th century India.

'Mahatma Phule started first Dalit school and dug a well where the Dalits were invited to draw water, which was a revolution at that time. Now, this is the man who actually started talking about the farmers and the labour and the agriculture. In India, there was a school called agriculturalism before the Vedic philosophy came in. It spoke of the relationship between the seed and land, seed and water, seed and crop and the human beings. This was a philosophical domain. And Buddha tried to negotiate with that philosophy. But later on, the different schools of thought that emerged, the Sankhya school, the Vedic and Vedantic schools, they completely removed the agrarian philosophical school from any engagement. He brought it back,' Mr Ilaiah said.
Speaking about the social situation in the 19th century, he said, 'When Phule was born in the 19th century, there were no rights for the Shudras and Dalits, including the Patels in Gujarat, the Reddys, the Khammas in Telugu States, the Lingayats and Vokaligas in Karnataka. In fact, his own stature was higher in the society, but when he had gone for a friend's marriage, he was thrown out and was told that Shudras cannot participate in a Brahmin marriage or walk in the procession. He was also beaten up.' He added that despite a higher social status at that time, Mahatma Phule lived in Dalit settlement and started a school for the Dalits.

'BJP wants to use OBCs for their votes'
Mr. Ilaiah said that after coming to power, the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have been trying to renegotiate with the ideologies of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. 'I am in a way was surprised after the BJP came to power with Narendra Modi as an OBC Prime Minister, even the RSS, BJP started renegotiating with Phule and Ambedkar and Savitri Bai in certain ways. And because of that renegotiation, they started celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti, etc.' He also said that the ruling party cannot afford to upset the OBCs. 'They want to use OBCs only for votes. And when it comes to their history, they have problems with it. Phule absolutely, 100%, represents the Marathas, all Shudra , Reddys, Khammas,' he said.
He also slammed the government for not having any OBC or Dalit representatives in CBFC, the film certification body.

"All nations condemned act of terrorism in Pahalgam": BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad

Patna (Bihar) [India], June 14 (ANI): BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, who recently led an all-party delegation on a multi-national tour as part of India's big diplomatic outreach, said on Saturday that the international community has supported India's global outreach on Operation Sindoor, with all nations condemning terrorism in one voice. Addressing a press conference in Patna, the BJP MP stated that terrorism is like cancer, which is affecting the whole world. Prasad said, 'All nations spoke in one voice and condemned the act of terrorism in Pahalgam. When we met them (representatives of different countries), they said that 'no form of terrorism is acceptable'. We are not against the citizens of Pakistan -- our problem is that the generals of Pakistan run the nation, and to fulfil their own agenda, they misuse these terrorists. Terrorism is like a cancer that is affecting the entire world.' Prasad further said that India is marching ahead through democracy and the world is recognising and respecting the country's growing economic strength. He said, 'Pakistan and India were born on the same date in 1947... Today, India is the fourth largest economy in the world, whereas Pakistan is going around begging with a bowl in its hand. India is developing through democracy. The world is impressed by India's economic development. Wherever we went, they requested us to build economic ties with India. The world is respecting India's economic power. That is why they are also listening our stance.' Highlighting details about the recent all-party delegation visit, the BJP MP said, 'We were asked (during all-party delegation visit) why the operation was named 'Operation Sindoor'? We said the 'sindoor' of our daughters and sisters was wiped off, so we named it 'Operation Sindoor' to destroy those terrorists... People appreciated this...' Earlier on June 10, BJP MP Prasad said that the delegation had conveyed to global leaders India's firm policy of zero tolerance against cross-border terrorism. 'Pakistan is not only a state in denial, but the military-terrorist nexus has become a deadly combination,' the BJP MP told reporters. 'When we talked about history, we talked about how Pakistan is in the hands of Generals... The world needs to understand that Pakistan is in the grip of a military-general nexus whose dirty job is done by the terrorists and terrorist camps. In Pakistan's new setup, the Generals use terrorism as a proxy to keep themselves relevant,' he stated. The delegation, led by BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad, also included BJP MPs Daggubati Purandeswari, MJ Akbar, Gulam Ali Khatana, and Samik Bhattacharya; Congress MP Amar Singh, Priyanka Chaturvedi from Shiv Sena (UBT,) AIADMK MP M Thambidurai and former diplomat Pankaj Saran. The group visited the UK, France, Germany, Brussels (Belgium), Italy and Denmark to explain India's position against terror and brief countries about Operation Sindoor. The operation was launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam by Pakistan-sponsored militants that claimed 26 lives and injured several others. Following retaliation from Pakistan, the Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. AAP-led Punjab govt, Punjab Congress, Akali Dal object to 'One Nation One Election' in meeting with JPC

CHANDIGARH: The AAP-led Punjab government, Punjab Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal registered their strong objections to the 'One Nation One Election' proposal tabled by the BJP-led central government during a meeting with members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Saturday. After attending a meeting convened by the Joint Parliamentary Committee under the chairmanship of PP Choudhary, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema described it as a direct assault on the fundamental structure and spirit of the Constitution of India as framed by Babasaheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar. Cheema said that he, along with AAP State President Aman Arora, completely rejected the move. "This proposal by the BJP-led Union government is a hidden agenda designed to destroy the federal structure of the nation as enshrined in the Constitution of India, meticulously architected by Baba Saheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar," he said. Referring to the amendments in the proposed Bill, Cheema said that the suggested amendments would effectively render the tenures of state assemblies subject to the discretion of the Union government, an alarming overreach incompatible with the federal framework enshrined in the Constitution. He said that this bill will further encourage the misuse of Article 356 and 360 by the Union government. As per section 5 of part 2, if the Election Commission is of the opinion that the elections to any Legislative Assembly cannot be conducted along with the general election to the House of the People, it may make a recommendation to the President, to declare by an order, that the election to that Legislative Assembly may be conducted at a later date. Citing this amendment, Cheema said that the BJP's One Nation One Election concept would ultimately backfire, as it would enable the Union government to conduct state elections at its convenience a year or two after general elections, rather than fulfilling the purpose of the proposal as being publicised.

NDA netas accuse Lalu of insulting Ambedkar

Patna: NDA leaders in Bihar on Saturday demanded a public apology from RJD chief Lalu Prasad after a video went viral showing a party supporter placing a photo of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar near Lalu's feet on the latter's birthday on June 11. In the video, Lalu does not touch the portrait and his security personnel move it aside. He also does not comment during the incident. Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, deputy CM Samrat Choudhary and JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha accused Lalu of disrespecting Dalits and EBCs and demanded a formal apology for "insulting" Ambedkar. However, the RJD defended its leader. Party spokesperson Sarika Paswan said, "Lalu is the only one who truly respects Baba Saheb. BJP will not understand this. The sentiments of that party worker are not being understood." Still, BJP leaders insisted the video showed Ambedkar's picture placed on the ground near Lalu's feet. Deputy CM Choudhary said, "The picture proved that Lalu hates the Dalit community and never respected Baba Saheb's thoughts. Insulting Dalits and backward classes is part of Lalu's work culture. Insulting Ambedkar on his birthday is a dark chapter in politics. Watching the video, it becomes clear that Lalu has no respect for Baba Saheb. Insulting people of lower castes has been his habit. The public has recognised his dictatorial style. " Manjhi added, "Lalu sitting with his feet towards Baba Saheb is a big insult. The public should understand this." JD(U)'s Kushwaha said, "Those doing politics in the name of Ambedkar are insulting him. This is their socialist thinking. Everyone worships him, and he is showing his feet." Former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "The person who gave it may be a courtier, but what was Lalu doing? He should have understood that Ambedkar is the Messiah of the country."
