KUCHING (July 14): Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak (Asas) president Dato Wee Hong Seng has officially stepped down at the association's annual general meeting at Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, Petra Jaya Sports Complex yesterday.
'As I stand here delivering my final speech as Asas president, I am filled with gratitude, reflection and a profound sense of pride,' he said after 15 years at the helm.
His approach from the outset, he added, was defined by a clear purpose which was to build not just a functional organisation but a resilient, athlete-focused institution that would elevate Sarawak's standing in Malaysian swimming.
'Our goals were simple but ambitious, to strengthen the grassroots. To empower our divisions. To nurture champions. And to ensure Sarawak was seen and respected on every competitive stage,' he said.
He believes the association went on to build something enduring, refine athlete development and forge key alliances with ministries, agencies and national bodies.
'Our swimmers have brought home gold after gold but, more importantly, they've brought home values — resilience, humility, teamwork,' he went on.
The association, he stressed, must never become a vehicle for personal gain or ego.
'We are here to serve. Not to profit. Not to chase status. We exist for our athletes, full stop,' he explained.
'You do not just inherit a position. You inherit a legacy. You carry the weight of 15 years of progress. You carry Sarawak's name,' Wee told the newly elected committee.
'Please, always put our athletes first. Listen to them. Stand by them. Develop them, not for your benefit, but for their future,' he urged.
Pemanca Tan Kun Gee (Kuching) was elected as the new president for the term 2025-2027 along with Ung Chung Sung (Sibu) as his deputy.
The vice presidents are Ling Neng Ching (Bintulu), Chong Ted Sen (Kuching) and Ting Chee Hee (Miri).
Tang Chau Fang (Kuching) is the new secretary while the treasurer is Sia Chiew Hung (Sibu).
The committee members include Carol Ting and Chan Ngiik Ching (Bintulu), Amy Ting Ling Ling and Diana Chee Su Ling (Miri), Wong Liong Kheng (Sibu), Hii Hieng Chiong and Pang Suk Yun (Asas). Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak lead Tan Kun Gee wee hong seng

Swimmer Hoe Yean makes Universiade history

KUALA LUMPUR: Swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean rewrote his own national record to deliver a historic silver medal for Malaysia on the first day of the World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany yesterday. The 22-year-old clocked 3:47.38s in the 400m freestyle to slash almost a second off his previous best time of 3:48.36s achieved at the Australian Championships in April last year. Hoe Yean also became only the second Malaysian swimmer (Jeffrey Ong won the men's 1,500m freestyle silver in 1991 in England) to stand on the podium in Universiade history. Nikolai Kolesnikov, swimming under the Individual Neutral Athletes banner, took gold in 3:46.66s and American Ryan James Erisman Jr claimed the bronze in 3:47.52s. Hoe Yean will swim in the men's 200m freestyle today.

Soon Huat-Shevon stopped by China's world No.2 pair

KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Soon Huat–Shevon Lai's bid to reach the Japan Open semi-finals ended in heartbreak once again, as the world No. 6 mixed doubles fell to defending champions Jiang Zhen Bang–Wei Ya Xin of China today. The Malaysian husband-and-wife team went down 21-13, 23-21 in the quarter-finals — their eighth defeat in nine encounters against the formidable world No. 2 pair. Soon Huat–Shevon showed fighting spirit in the second game, clawing back from 14-18 down to hold game point at 20-19, but were unable to convert as the Chinese duo held firm to close out the match. Their defeat also dashed hopes of an all-Malaysian semi-final, following earlier progress by compatriots Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei. The loss continues a frustrating trend for Soon Huat–Shevon, who have now exited in the quarter-finals in eight of their last nine tournaments. It underlined their consistency in reaching the latter stages, but also their struggle to break through to the next level.

Soon Huat-Shevon bow out of Japan Open

PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie's run in the Japan Open came to an end after they went down to China's Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin in the mixed doubles quarter-finals. Soon Huat-Shevon had an opportunity to take the match to a third and deciding game when they led 20-19 in the second game but could not clinch the deal and lost 13-21, 21-23 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Friday (July 18). The defeat meant that the independent pair's hopes of setting up an all-Malaysian last-four clash against Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei went up in smoke. World No. 4 Tang Jie-Ee Wei will instead take on world No. 2 Zhenbang-Yaxin on Saturday (July 19) for a place in the final.
