Police lathicharge BPSC aspirants protesting outside CM Nitish Kumar's residence in Patna
An official said repeated requests were made for the protesters to vacate the area and that police resorted to 'mild lathicharge' when the protesters tried to breach the restricted area.
Protesters said several were injured in the lathicharge, including women. Police, however, denied claims of serious injuries.
The protest, which has been going on for months, is against the delays in realising the TRE-3 supplementary results, along with alleged irregularities, including form rejections, duplicate names in published results and a lack of transparency in the recruitment process.
This wasn't the first flare-up in the protest. Aspirants staged a 50-day protest earlier this year at Gardanibagh, which ended with promises from BPSC officials to address concerns. But the supplementary results were not released.
The TRE-3, held in July 2024 to fill 89,581 posts for primary, middle, and secondary school teachers, has been mired in controversy over transparency, with candidates demanding a review of rejected applications and clarity on unfilled seats.
Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, criticised the government for the police action against the protesters.
'Brutally beating youth who are democratically raising their demands, committing injustice and atrocities, is the main hobby of the Nitish- BJP government. This incompetent government nurtures and protects criminals and corrupt people while it lathicharges students, youth, and the unemployed whenever it feels like it. Everyone will unite this time to change this 20-year-old incompetent, wayward, and useless NDA government, that is certain,' Tejashwi said.

Nitish lays foundation stones of road and bridge projects in Muzaffarpur
1 2 3 Patna: Keeping his promises he made during Pragati Yatra in Muzaffarpur earlier this year, CM Nitish Kumar on Thursday laid the foundation stones of several road reconstruction and two bridge construction projects worth Rs 574.16 crore in Muzaffarpur town and its outskirts. Besides laying the foundation stones at a function held in Bhagwanpur Chowk, he also participated in two other functions and inspected the under construction Muzaffarpur bypass road. Two of his ministerial colleagues — water resources minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and panchayati raj minister Kedar Prasad Gupta — accompanied him. He also held a dialogue with the beneficiaries of various schemes at Teacher Training College, Patahi, where two cheques worth Rs 105 crore and Rs 2.11 crore were given for 5,642 and 201 self-help groups respectively. The CM also interacted with the Jeevika didis. Among the bridges whose foundation stones were laid are a road over bridge with an approach road between Ramdayalu Nagar and Muzaffarpur railway station to be built at a cost of Rs 167.68 crore, and a reinforced concrete cement bridge of 174.24-metre length at Bhattagama Madhurpatti Ghat in Gaighat block, involving an expenditure of Rs 24.28 crore. Additionally, a 7km road from Chandni Chowk to Bakhri road will be completed, involving an expenditure of Rs 89.77 crore. A foundation stone was also laid for widening and strengthening of a 9.7km-long road from the Sheohar-Minapur-Kanti NH-28 to Raghai Ghat road with an investment of Rs 74.18 crore. The projects will be completed by Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation, and road construction and rural works departments. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar unveils projects worth ₹574 crore in Muzaffarpur
Ahead of the Assembly election, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday (July 31, 2025) laid the foundation stone of various development projects worth ₹574.16 crore in Muzaffarpur district. The project includes construction work of Railway Over Bridge (ROB)-cum-approach road between Ramdayalu Nagar and Muzaffarpur railway station at a cost of ₹167.68 crore and construction work of a road from Muzaffarpur-Pusa Road to Chandwara bridge approach road at a cost of ₹120.93 crore. Mr. Kumar laid the foundation stone for widening and upgradation work of the road portion from Chandni Chowk to Ramdayalu Nagar at a cost of ₹44.76 crore and widening and strengthening work spanning 7 km of Chandni Chowk to Bakhri road at a cost of ₹89.77 crore. The Chief Minister laid widening and strengthening work of many other roads. After laying the foundation for the various works, Mr. Kumar interacted with social security pensioners at Teacher Training College, Patahi in which the beneficiaries thanked him for increasing the pension amount from ₹400 to ₹1,100 per month. He also provided tricycles to persons with disabilities apart from handing over a cheque of ₹1 lakh each to the beneficiaries under Inter-Caste Marriage Promotion Scheme. On the announcement of making 125 units of electricity free per month to every domestic consumer under the Chief Minister's Electricity Consumer Assistance Scheme, the domestic consumers present there also thanked Mr. Kumar for the decision. The ASHA workers present there too thanked the Chief Minister for increasing the incentive amount threefold from ₹1,000 to ₹3,000. While interacting with the members of self-help groups (SHGs) also known as Jeevika members, Mr. Kumar said when his government was formed in Bihar, the number of SHGs were negligible. 'In the year 2006, we took a loan from the World Bank and started increasing the number of self-help groups. The Jeevika sisters are doing a very good job. We named the self-help group as Jeevika and all of you are called Jeevika sisters,' Mr. Kumar said. 'Inspired by our work, the Central government of that time implemented this scheme in the whole country under the name of Aajeevika. All of you stay strong and move forward. The government will help you in every possible way,' he added. Accompanied by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and others, he also inspected the under-construction ROB of Muzaffarpur-Bypass, which is being constructed in a total length of 16.87 km at a cost of ₹250 crore. Except the ROB, the construction work of the remaining road has been completed. During the inspection, Mr. Kumar instructed officials to complete the remaining work as soon as possible. With its completion, traffic in Muzaffarpur city is expected to become more smooth. During the Pragati Yatra on January 5 this year, Mr. Kumar had reviewed the development work of Muzaffarpur district and promised several developmental schemes would be launched soon.

Most of these leaders have had long associations with either Lalu Prasad Yadav or Nitish Kumar, and some still wield significant local or caste-based influence As Bihar gears up for the 2025 Assembly elections, political observers are watching for possible comebacks by several once-prominent leaders who had slipped into anonymity or political exile over the years. Once influential figures in state politics, these leaders are now being courted by both the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan, as well as Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraj Party, as alliances try to shore up caste-based support and grassroots clout. Though sidelined for various reasons, these leaders have not been politically irrelevant. Most have had long associations with either Lalu Prasad Yadav or Nitish Kumar, and some still wield significant local or caste-based influence. Here's a look at five such figures who may attempt a return to relevance in the coming election cycle. 1. Nagmani Kushwaha Once a trusted ally of both Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar, Nagmani retains a notable following among Bihar's Kushwaha (Koiri) community, which constitutes 4-5% of the state's population. Dadan Pehelwan Known for his muscleman image in the Buxar region, Dadan Pehelwan (also known as Dadan Yadav) has long commanded Yadav and Muslim support. A former independent MLA, he's been part of both the RJD and JDU, and once contested on a BSP ticket. Post-2015, legal troubles and dwindling political activity pushed him to the margins. But he's reportedly preparing for a comeback, either independently or through a smaller party. His close connect with the electorate in Buxar and adjoining areas makes him a potential disruptor on a few key seats. 4. Renu Kushwaha A prominent face from the Kushwaha community, Renu Kushwaha has been associated with both the JDU and RJD in the past. After being denied a Lok Sabha ticket by LJP from Khagaria in 2024, she faded from the spotlight. However, her recent entry into the RJD in the presence of Tejashwi Yadav has signaled her intent to return. As a Kushwaha woman leader, she brings both caste and gender appeal to the table. Her current political strategy appears focused on social justice and women's empowerment, issues that could strike a chord with rural and semi-urban voters. 5. Jayaprakash Narayan Yadav A longtime associate of Lalu Prasad Yadav, Jayaprakash Narayan Yadav has largely withdrawn from public life in recent years, especially after his daughter's defeat in the last election.
