Justin Rose pokes fun at pair of shanks during third round of 2025 British Open
Rosie found himself in precarious situations twice Saturday during the third round of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush. The first came on the par-4 eighth when he was attempting to hit his approach shot and shanked his shot into an adjacent fairway. "Oh my God," Rose said as he immediately started to check on the fans who got a little closer to the action than they thought they would.
Then, it happened again on the par-4 11th hole. Same situation, hitting his approach from the rough, and voila, he send it fore right."
"I've shanked it again," he said within an instant of making contact.
"Shanks for coming! Crowds were incredible… Even came to say hi on a few occasions!" Rose said on X, formerly known as Twitter, after the round.
The shanks weren't detrimental to his round, as Rose shot 3-under 68 on Moving Day and is T-14 heading into the final round.

Ben Shelton cruises through opening round at Washington 500
Back on American soil following a quarter-final finish at Wimbledon, former Florida Gator and world No. 8 Ben Shelton cruised his opening match at the Mubadala Citi DC Open against fellow American Mackenzie McDonald (No. 95), 6-3, 6-4, on Tuesday night. It took just 1 hour and 15 minutes for Shelton to get the job done in the stadium, hitting 23 winners and nine aces. Shelton punished McDonald whenever the latter missed his first serve. Shelton won 17 of 24 second serve return points and won two of three critical break points. Shelton dominated the opening set. The two were about even whenever rallying, but Shelton's overpowering serve proved to be an early difference-maker. That's par for the course for Shelton, especially in these early rounds at 500-level events. He has only truly struggled against the world's No. 1 and No. 2 players this season in Grand Slam play, so these games are about fine-tuning his game and improving his weaknesses. He moved well on the hard court and played a strong return game. The second game was more of the same. McDonald spent most of Shelton's service points trying to figure out how to return a first serve coming in at 130 mph on average. Shelton's fastest of the day came in at 145 mph, and he only had to play a second serve twice. Shelton will face Gabriel Diallo in the Round of 16 on Thursday. While the two have never met at an ATP Tour event, Diallo got the best of Shelton, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3, at an October 2022 Challenger Tour event. Diallo reached the final in that tournament. Should Shelton advance, he'd have a chance to play doubles partner and fellow American Francis Tiafoe in the quarter-finals. Another option is Flavio Cobolli, which sets up a rematch of last year's semi-final at this event. Pundit credits Notre Dame success to former Cincinnati assistants
The Fighting Irish can thank Cincinnati for their recent success Is Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell's success due to a bunch of former Bearcat assistants who now work in South Bend for Notre Dame? One pundit thinks so. The College Football Watcher account on X, formerly known as Twitter, suggests that Fickell has had success because Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman was once the defensive coordinator there. He then lists Gino Guidugli, the current Fighting Irish quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, who was the QB coach in Cincy; wide receivers coach Mike Brown, who had that same title with the Bearcats; defensive backs coach Mike Mickens, who was the DB coach in Cincinnati and has that title plus defensive pass-game coordinator with Notre Dame; and former Fighting Irish special teams coordinator Brian Mason. Mason was the special teams coordinator at Cincinnati and is now doing the same job with the NFL's Indianapolis Colts. Whether or not Fickell can have success without these assistants working for him, it's clear that just about any successful head coach will develop successful assistants. At the very least, when teams win, assistants get plucked for other jobs. So it's maybe a coincidence that all these assistants worked for Notre Dame, but it's probably not a coincidence that they are good at their jobs.
