Engineering Breakthrough Opens Door to Cheap Hydrogen Power

As an alternative to fossil fuel combustion, hydrogen fuel cells hold tremendous promise. But they're also notoriously difficult and expensive to manage, which largely explains why we don't see them everywhere (or anywhere, for that matter, except for a few initiatives that are 'exploring' their efficiency). But that may soon change.
In a Nature Materials paper published August 8, researchers announced the development of a new type of solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) that addresses an underlying problem for these contraptions: temperature. Hydrogen fuel cells, a type of SOFC, directly convert hydrogen gas into energy and water. This process, while very efficient and long-lasting, demands ridiculously high operating temperatures ranging from 1,292 to 1,472 degrees Fahrenheit (700 to 800 degrees Celsius).
The new cell, however, works at just 572 degrees F (300 degrees C), less than half of what was previously required. 'Bringing the working temperature down to 300°C would slash material costs and open the door to consumer-level systems,' said Yoshihiro Yamazaki, study senior author and a materials engineer at Kyushu University in Japan, in a statement.
Specifically, the team focused on re-engineering the electrolyte, a ceramic layer composed of different atomic structures arranged in a crystal lattice. In hydrogen fuel cells, positively charged hydrogen ions, or protons, travel across these crystalline pathways to convert hydrogen gas into energy and water. Normally, the fuel cell must operate under extremely high temperatures to work, which the researchers tried to bypass using chemical dopants—substances added to manipulate a material's physical properties—in combination with an appropriate oxide crystal.
'But this also comes with a challenge,' Yamazaki explained. 'Adding chemical dopants can increase the number of mobile protons passing through an electrolyte, but it usually clogs the crystal lattice, slowing the protons down.'
After testing various candidates, the team locked in on two compounds, barium stannate and barium titanate. When doped with scandium at a temperature of 572 degrees F, the two materials displayed efficiency levels at par with existing SOFCs at much higher temperatures.
Surprisingly, the scandium atoms latched onto oxygen atoms to form a 'wide and softly vibrating [molecular] highway' that enabled the protons to travel with an 'unusually low migration barrier,' Yamazaki explained. The two compounds used for this electrolyte are also softer than what's conventionally used to build such cells, he added, which was likely the reason the compounds easily absorbed the scandium dopant.
'Our work transforms a long-standing scientific paradox into a practical solution, bringing affordable hydrogen power closer to everyday life,' Yamazaki said.
Compared to room temperatures, 572 degrees F is still very high. Nevertheless, this reduction is still significant and paints a promising future for bringing down operating temperatures even further—and also operating costs—for the widespread, practical implementation of SOFCs.

Quantum computers use atomic particles to perform complex calculations beyond the abilities of today's supercomputers, positioning them to revolutionize numerous industries. Many businesses are battling to produce technology that overcomes the challenges inherent in quantum machines. Two for investors to consider are IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) and Quantum Computing Inc. (NASDAQ: QUBT), which also refers to itself as QCi. These companies use different techniques to build quantum devices. IonQ employs ions to perform calculations while QCi utilizes photons. Between IonQ and QCi, one proves to be a better quantum computing investment right now. To understand which one and why, let's dive into both businesses in more detail. Where Quantum Computing Inc. is at today Current quantum computers are prone to calculation errors due to the delicate nature of atomic particles, preventing these machines from scaling up, and limiting their widespread use. Many quantum companies try to minimize errors by subjecting particles to freezing temperatures in expensive, bulky cryogenic equipment. Quantum Computing Inc. takes a different approach. It embraces the inherent chaos of harnessing these particles in a technique called entropy quantum computing. This method allows QCi's machines to operate at room temperature, use less power, and integrate with ordinary computer servers. Despite these advantages, its technology hasn't taken off. In the first quarter, QCi produced revenue of just $39,000. However, its Q1 operating expenses totaled $8.3 million. This chasm between income and expenses eventually will become a death knell for the business if sales don't pick up. But perhaps the company is turning a corner. In April, it sold one of its computers to a large automotive manufacturer, and in July, it secured a purchase valued at $332,000 from a major U.S. bank. The bank's sale is significant considering QCi produced revenue of $373,000 in all of 2024. IonQ's financial ups and downs IonQ's technology also operates at room temperature by using lasers to carefully control ions. It's been winning customers and growing revenue, a sign that its approach shows promise in surmounting quantum computing's shortcomings. In 2024, sales reached $43.1 million, up from the prior year's $22 million. But in Q1, the company's revenue of $7.6 million was flat year over year. This underwhelming result was not a good sign for a business with a Q1 operating loss of $75.7 million. Then in Q2, IonQ's sales trajectory changed once again. This time, revenue came in at an impressive $20.7 million, nearly double the prior year's $11.4 million. Part of this massive increase came from the company's recent acquisitions, as it works toward building a quantum computer network akin to the infrastructure underpinning today's internet. However, the acquisitions resulted in additional expenses, which catapulted IonQ's Q2 operating costs to $181.3 million, a huge increase over 2024's $60.3 million. Consequently, its Q2 operating loss ballooned to $160.6 million versus a loss of $48.9 million in the previous year. To bolster its finances, IonQ executed a $1 billion equity offering in July. This adds to the $1.3 billion in total assets the company exited Q2 with, while total liabilities stood at $168.2 million. Choosing between IonQ and Quantum Computing Inc. In deciding between these two quantum computing companies, one factor to weigh is share price valuation. This can be assessed through the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio, which measures how much investors are willing to pay for every dollar of revenue generated over the trailing 12 months. IonQ's P/S multiple is substantially lower than QCi's, indicating it's a better value. In fact, QCi's P/S ratio is so high, its stock looks overpriced. IonQ's superior sales growth and share price valuation make it a better investment over QCi in the emerging field of quantum computing. That said, buying IonQ stock carries risks, especially in the current macroeconomic climate, which could see inflation rise as a result of the Trump administration's aggressive tariff policies. IonQ's operating expenses are already accelerating, and the economic environment could drive those costs higher. While its balance sheet sports the funds to maintain operations in the short term, the longer-term picture remains murky. Whether IonQ's tech can achieve the quantum computing dominance it seeks is far from certain, and both it and QCi face large competitors with deep pockets, such as Microsoft, which is developing its own quantum computing solution. How Alien Life Could Exist Without Water

The search for alien life usually hinges on finding the same conditions that sustain life on Earth. But what if aliens don't need the same things that we need to survive? A new proposal tackles this question for water—arguably one of the most important factors in the search for alien life. Intriguing new research from MIT proposes that liquids are what's important for extraterrestrial habitability, and not just water. The new research specifically focuses on ionic fluids—substances that planetary scientists believe could form on the surfaces of rocky planets and moons. Ionic liquids are highly tolerant to high temperatures and low pressures, allowing them to remain in a stable liquid state that's potentially friendly to biomolecules. If confirmed, the proposal, published August 11 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, would dramatically expand what's considered the 'habitable zone' among known exoplanets. By current standards, the habitable zone is defined as the band within planetary systems in which liquid water can remain stable on the surface. When it comes to life, we're understandably biased towards water; all life as we know it depends on it. 'We consider water to be required for life because that is what's needed for Earth life,' Rachana Agrawal, study lead author and a postdoctoral researcher at MIT, told MIT News. 'But if we look at a more general definition, we see that what we need is a liquid in which metabolism for life can take place.' Originally, the researchers were studying the toxic, gassy atmosphere of Venus and whether such conditions could support extraterrestrial life. The planet is shrouded in clouds of sulfuric acid, a common byproduct of volcanic activity on Earth and, presumably, on other rocky planets. While experimenting with different ways to extract organic compounds from sulfuric acid, the team noticed that each time, 'a stubborn layer of liquid always remained,' they explained. 'From there, we took the leap of imagination of what this could mean,' Agrawal said. 'Sulfuric acid is found on Earth from volcanoes, and organic compounds have been found on asteroids and other planetary bodies. So, this led us to wonder if ionic liquids could potentially form and exist naturally on exoplanets.' For the study, the researchers explored how ionic liquids could form naturally. (Earth's ionic liquids are largely synthesized for industrial purposes; the only natural instance is the venom mixture from two very specific species of ants). They mixed various nitrogen-containing organic compounds with sulfuric acid on basalt rock, a common geological feature of rocky planets. This reaction occurred under the hot, low-pressure conditions resembling the weather at Venus or other rocky planets. They found that ionic liquid emerged from these experiments at temperatures up to 356 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius) and also at extremely low pressures. 'We were just astonished that the ionic liquid forms under so many different conditions,' Sara Seager, study co-author and an astrophysicist at MIT, told MIT News. The results also demonstrate the extraordinary persistence of ionic liquids compared to water, Seager explained. If 'pockets' of ionic liquid could remain on a planet's surface for millennia, they'd be the 'small oases for simple forms of ionic-liquid-based life.' 'We just opened up a Pandora's box of new research,' Seager added. It's wholly reasonable to begin the search for alien life using Earth and Earth-based life as our starting point. But when we consider something that could contradict these baseline assumptions, that's when the most provocative, groundbreaking initiatives come to life.
