China's semiconductor market for the automotive sector is rapidly expanding, driven by the country's status as the world's largest electric vehicle (EV) market and strong government support for new energy vehicles. Automakers are intensely focused on advancing electric mobility and integrating innovative features such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), AI-powered infotainment, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates. The development of next-generation electrical and electronic (E&E) system architectures, including centralized domain controllers and software-defined vehicle platforms, is accelerating. These advancements enable the production of more intelligent, connected, and upgradable vehicles. As a result, the semiconductor content per vehicle is increasing, fueling robust demand for automotive chips, especially power semiconductors, AI processors, and high-speed connectivity solutions. Microcontrollers (MCUs) dominate the automotive semiconductor market due to a strong manufacturing ecosystem, the quick adoption of smart devices, and government initiatives aimed at semiconductor self-sufficiency, such as the 'Made in China 2025' policy and the National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, which has allocated over USD 29 billion for domestic chip development. In automotive applications, MCUs play a crucial role in real-time control, monitoring, and processing for systems such as engine management, battery management, ADAS, infotainment, and safety features. This integration enhances vehicle performance, safety, and user experience. Moreover, Chinese manufacturers are working to stabilize their production of automotive-grade chips at the 14 nm process node and are investing in 7 nm capabilities. For instance, SMIC began mass production of 14 nm chips in late 2019. By March 2022, the company reported impressive yield rates of 90–95% for its 14 nm chips, which are regarded as industry-leading and suitable for critical automotive and industrial applications where reliability is essential. In 2024, the surge in EV sales in China exceeded 11 million, significantly increasing the demand for high-performance MCUs. Key players in domestic manufacturing, namely Midea Group (which expanded into MCU production for home appliances in January 2023), GigaDevice, and AutoChips, are leading this sector. Future investments will focus on research and development for next-generation automotive MCUs, enhancing energy efficiency, and building supply chain resilience. Additionally, significant government and industry funding is being directed toward semiconductor hubs in Eastern China, such as Shanghai and Suzhou.

Power semiconductors are the fastest-growing segment of China's automotive sector, driven primarily by the country's rapid electrification and the increased adoption of EVs. These vehicles require significantly more power semiconductors than traditional ICE vehicles for essential functions such as inverters, onboard chargers, and DC-DC converters. Silicon carbide (SiC) devices are widely used in various components of electric vehicles, including main drive inverters, onboard chargers (OBCs), DC-DC converters, and high-power charging equipment. The composition of SiC devices is as follows: substrates account for approximately 45%, epitaxial wafers make up about 25%, and modules represent around 20%. Notably, SiC modules are being integrated into 800V architectures, which are becoming increasingly popular in new electric vehicles in China. Meanwhile, gallium nitride (GaN) devices are recognized for their low switching energy, which is more than 50% lower than SiC devices; however, GaN requires thicker epitaxial layers. Chinese automakers are also introducing innovative features such as ultra-fast charging, ADAS, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities, and more sophisticated infotainment systems. These advancements significantly heighten the demand for robust and efficient power semiconductor solutions. Looking ahead, the roadmap for Chinese automakers includes further electrification, the development of autonomous driving technologies, and the integration of SiC/GaN-based power modules to enhance efficiency and reduce vehicle weight. As a result, power semiconductors are becoming the fastest-growing segment in China's automotive sector.
Hong Kong is the largest importer of integrated electrical circuits from China.
China exports integrated circuits (ICs) to Hong Kong primarily due to its status as a global trade hub and logistics gateway. In Hong Kong, these ICs are often re-exported to other markets or utilized in local electronics assembly and manufacturing. China's proximity to Hong Kong, along with an established supply chain and robust semiconductor production capacity, positions it as the leading supplier of these components. Several factors drive these exports, including China's rapidly growing domestic IC manufacturing, government support for semiconductor self-sufficiency, and strong global demand for electronics. Moreover, its role as a financial and logistics center helps connect Chinese manufacturers with international buyers. The applications for these ICs are diverse, encompassing automotive electronics, consumer electronics, IoT devices, and industrial automation. Both domestic and international automakers rely on these ICs for next-generation vehicles, including electric and connected cars. Due to its limited semiconductor manufacturing capacity, Hong Kong depends on China for these integrated circuits, relying on China's advanced and cost-effective production to meet local and global demand. In fiscal year 2024, China exported 89.39 million integrated circuits to Hong Kong, underscoring Hong Kong's critical role in the global semiconductor trade. Supporting this trade are several key factors: China's aggressive investment in semiconductor research and development, the Belt and Road Initiative's impact on trade infrastructure, and Hong Kong's integration into the Greater Bay Area's high-tech ecosystem. Collectively, these factors ensure a steady flow of ICs and bolster Hong Kong's status as a leading global electronics trade center.

What could a scrapped EV mandate mean for Windsor's NextStar battery plant?

(Robert Lothian/CTV News Windsor) The potential scrapping of Canada's electric vehicle mandate could create more uncertainty in the short term for Windsor's NextStar Energy electric vehicle battery plant. Earlier this week, automotive leaders asked the federal government to scrap its electric vehicle sales mandate. 'Now, what's changed since it was designed and came into force is that we've had this collapse in EV sales,' Brian Kingston, the CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association, said after a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday. The meeting included the CEOs of Ford Canada, Stellantis Canada, and GM Canada. Greg Layson, the Digital and Mobile Editor for Automotive News Canada, told CTV News the targets were always 'ambitious.' 'With no zero emissions vehicle purchase incentives, it becomes more difficult to meet those targets from the government standpoint,' Layson said. Potentially lowered EV production creates another hurdle to overcome for the NextStar battery plant. Production of battery cells has been expected to begin at the plant later this year. 'We weren't even going to see two shifts of production on day one. It was going to be a long, slow process. It might just be a longer, slower process.' Previous estimates expected the battery plant to create about 2,500 jobs when fully operational. NextStar Energy declined to comment on potential changes to the vehicle mandate. In a previous unrelated inquiry last week, the battery manufacturer noted about 850 employees have been hired so far. 'We're not going to hire 2,500 workers overnight to fill this place. They're going to hire shift at a time, fill what they need, work when they need to,' Layson added. Under the EV sales mandate, 20 per cent of all new light-duty vehicles sold in Canada must be zero-emission as of next year. The target rises annually to 100 per cent by 2035. Layson believes Canada could loosen the mandates and 'spread' out the targets. He's optimistic the plant will play a key role in the EV sector when consumers transition, but it could take longer than expected. The automotive journalist added the industry will need better infrastructure and more competitive pricing to see demand take off. 'When sales fall, production falls, and when production falls, batteries aren't needed,' he noted. -With files from the Canadian Press.

Global economy on edge ahead of Trump's trade deal deadline
After U.S. President Donald Trump imposed hefty tariffs on dozens of countries in April, then announced a three-month pause, one of his top advisers made a bold prediction. 'We're going to run 90 deals in 90 days,' Peter Navarro, the president's trade adviser, told Fox Business Network. Trade partners would trip over one another to offer concessions to the U.S. in order to avoid the threatened 'reciprocal' tariffs. With the July 9 deadline only days away, the Trump administration has come up short. It has signed only three deals – two barebone trade pacts with Britain and Vietnam and a partial and temporary tariff truce with China. On Thursday, a frustrated Mr. Trump said he would start sending letters to countries that had failed to reach an agreement with the White House, dictating tariffs as high as 70 per cent that would come into force in August. The situation is combustible. If Mr. Trump proceeds with the unilateral imposition of punishing tariffs, major trading partners that have held off retaliation will likely hit back with their own counter-tariffs. That could escalate quickly, convulsing supply chains and disrupting the calm that has prevailed in financial markets since April. Mr. Trump has threatened to send tariff letters before without following through. And more deals could emerge before the July 9 deadline. Trade officials from the European Union, Japan, South Korea and other countries, including Canada, have all been in Washington looking for a breakthrough. Analysis: As some Asian countries strike deals with Trump, others brace for tariffs Still, the fact that Mr. Trump – who fancies himself the ultimate deal-maker – has had such trouble closing, highlights the limits of America's ability to force its protectionist vision on the rest of the world. Access to the world's largest consumer market is potent leverage in any trade discussion. But other countries have diverse interests and complex domestic politics that make large trade concessions difficult. And they have an incentive to rag the puck, hoping Mr. Trump backs down in the face of renewed market turmoil, domestic opposition or court challenges. 'Countries don't view these talks entirely as a math equation,' said Brian Clow, who was deputy chief of staff to former prime minister Justin Trudeau and who helped oversee Canada-U.S. relations. 'It's also about pride and sovereignty, and so countries are only willing to bend so much to this president.' Mr. Trump's wholesale attempt to re-engineer the global trading system kicked into high gear on April 2, which he dubbed 'Liberation Day.' Using executive powers outlined in the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, Mr. Trump imposed a baseline tariff of 10 per cent on all trading partners – excluding Canada, Mexico and China, which had already been hit with IEEPA tariffs, ostensibly to punish them for shortcomings on border security. He also unveiled 'reciprocal' tariffs on some 50 trading partners, ranging from 10 per cent on the United Kingdom to 49 per cent on Cambodia. (These tariffs are separate from the sectoral tariffs Mr. Trump has placed on steel, aluminum and automobiles using Sec. 232 of the Trade Expansion Act). The verdict on 'Liberation Day' was swift and damning. Stock markets plunged and the U.S. dollar tumbled. There was a sharp sell-off in U.S. Treasuries alongside worrying signs of dysfunction in the world's most important bond market. After a week, Mr. Trump relented and announced the three-month pause, citing the 'yippy' bond market as a reason he reversed course. That set in motion the three-month sprint to get deals done. Britain reached an agreement first, which lowered levies on British car exports under a 100,000-vehicle quota and established duty-free quotas for beef, but left a 10 per cent baseline tariff in place. That was followed by an agreement with China that walked back the triple-digit tariffs both countries had placed one another in a mutually destructive show of brinksmanship. The truce is only six-months long and leaves the U.S. effective tariff rate on Chinese goods above 30 per cent. Then this week, the White House announced an agreement with Vietnam, that puts a 20 per cent tariff on Vietnamese goods (which is lower than the 40 per cent Mr. Trump had threatened), as well as a 40 per cent tariff on products that are deemed to have originated in China and been shipped to the U.S. via Vietnam. The booming Southeast is Trump's secret trade-war weapon Other deals are in the works. Negotiators from Japan, South Korea and the European Union have been meeting with Mr. Trump's trade team, led by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. But leaders in Tokyo, Seoul and Brussels have all indicated in recent days that the negotiating teams remain far apart and deals by July 9 are unlikely. 'The bottom line is that the Trump administration wants a fundamentally unbalanced deal,' said Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, a senior fellow at the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel. 'They want something like what they got with the U.K., what they appear to have gotten with Vietnam. But that doesn't work with, an economy that is roughly the size of the U.S. itself,' he said, referring to the EU. Ottawa is also trying to secure a deal with Washington but is working toward a self-imposed July 21 deadline. Canada wasn't hit with 'reciprocal' tariffs, but is facing sectoral tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles as well as levies on goods that don't comply with continental free trade agreement's rules of origin. While many countries appear to be earnestly engaging with the U.S., there are reasons to slow-walk negotiations. In May, the United States Court of International Trade ruled that Mr. Trump's use of IEEPA to impose tariffs was illegal, calling into question the basis of Mr. Trump's 'reciprocal' tariff plan. That ruling has been stayed until an appeal can be heard by a higher court, but it may be giving trade negotiators from other countries pause. There are also already more U.S. sectoral tariffs in the pipeline, with investigations currently under way into pharmaceuticals, lumber, semiconductors and copper that could result in Sec. 232 tariffs like those on steel, aluminum and automobiles. That means foreign negotiators don't have a clear picture of what other tariffs they may ultimately face when they're offering concessions. 'This type of exercise or negotiation is facilitated when both sides are putting chips on the table,' said Jeffrey Schott, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and a former U.S. trade negotiator. 'But in many respects the United States is just making demands and saying we will limit the protection we impose against you if meet our demands. That's a tough negotiating position.' So far, financial markets have taken this trade uncertainty in stride. Equity markets have rebounded from the post-'Liberation Day' slump and hit record highs in recent days. Volatility remains low in bond and currency markets. Robin Brooks, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a former chief FX strategist at Goldman Sachs, said that markets are responding positively to the trade détente between the U.S. and China, as well as the better-than-expected U.S. economic data that suggests earlier recession calls were overly pessimistic. As long as China and the U.S. don't resume their hot trade war, markets may shrug off a breakdown in trade discussions between the U.S. and the EU or Japan, Mr. Brooks said. But they likely won't be so sanguine if the failure to hit the July 9 deadline causes another round of erratic flip-flops from Mr. Trump. 'The dollar didn't fall because of tariffs. It fell because of this back-and-forth which in markets created a perception of chaos,' Mr. Brooks said of the market meltdown in April. 'If you're trying to put a finger on what could cause markets to fall out of bed, then it's more stuff like that, more back and forth.'
