The Empire State Building will light up for Pride and Juneteenth this month

Time Out02-06-2025
The holiday season may still be months away, but June presents its own festive season with Pride events all month and Juneteenth commemorations at mid-month. This year, the Empire State Building is getting in on the fun with two special light-up events.
In honor of Juneteenth, red, black and green lights will beam from the building on Thursday, June 19. Later in the month, the building's tower lights will shine in the rainbow colors of the inclusive Pride flag on Sunday, June 29, coinciding with the date of NYC's Pride March.
There are hundreds of events happening for Pride this year. A few of our top picks include Ladyland (featuring Cardi B and FKA Twigs), Books and Burlesque, the Criminal Queerness Festival and PRISM: A Festival of New Queer Musicals. Here's our full rundown of Pride events.
As for Juneteenth, there are plenty of ways to celebrate, including the Juneteenth Jazz Jubilee, Still We Rise: Juneteenth Celebration, "I Must Become a Menace to My Enemies" Juneteenth teach-in and a comedy show called Drunk Black History. Here are even more Juneteenth events.

Considering the Empire State Building's status as the world's most famous building, it's very cool to add light-up celebrations to the list for Pride and Juneteenth festivities. Definitely head to Midtown and snap a photo of the lights on June 19 and June 29.
The Empire State Building has been an icon since it opened in 1931 as the world's tallest building. Though the landmark may have lost its No. 1 height status, it's remained a beloved destination with incredible views of the city. The tower's lights change colors to honor holidays, special occasions and special causes. Thanks to a state-of-the-art LED system, the lights glow in a dazzling palette of 16 million colors with limitless combinations.

Swatch sorry for 'slanted eyes' ad after China uproar

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Chinese social media users have threatened to boycott Swiss watchmaker Swatch after an ad showed a model pulling the corner of his eyes. The image prompted uproar amid accusations it resembled the racist 'slanted eye' gesture used to mock Asians. Swatch has since apologised and taken down the advert online. The company said in a post on Instagram and Chinese social media channel Weibo that it had 'taken note of the recent concerns regarding the portrayal of a model'. 'We sincerely apologize for any distress or misunderstanding this may have caused,' they added. The watchmaker's response has failed to quieten anger in China around the picture. One Weibo poster, who has more than 1 million followers, accused Swatch of 'racism against Chinese'. Another wrote: 'They make money from us and still dare to discriminate against Chinese people. We would be spineless if we don't boycott it out of China.' Swatch, whose brands also include Blancpain, Longines, and Tissot, rakes in around 27% of its revenue from China, Hong Kong, and Macau. However the company has seen falling sales in China due to the country's economic slowdown. The group blamed an 11.2% drop in net sales for the first six months of the year on poor demand in China. Other luxury brands have also faced accusations of racism from their adverts. French company Dior sparked outrage after an advert showed a model pulling the corner of her eye. More Trending The picture, posted on Instagram in 2023, was quickly taken down after criticism by Chinese social media users. Dolce & Gabbana also faced calls for a boycott in 2018 after it posted a video showing a Chinese model clumsily eating Italian food with chopsticks. The fashion house cancelled its Shanghai show after the backlash. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. The Projector is closing for good on August 19 after a decade of alternative cinema

Colour us shocked. In a bit of depressing news, beloved indie cinema The Projector has announced that it's closing for good – with immediate effect, no less. The news comes less than a month after i t said it was returning to its original home at Golden Mile Tower, just in time for its 10th anniversary. The Projector announced its closure in an emotional post on Instagram today (August 19). There, it said that The Projector was entering "voluntary liquidation", citing "rising operational costs, shifting audience habits, and the global decline in cinema attendance". Challenging headwinds for any independent art and film venue, perhaps all the more so in Singapore. With its exit, The Projector leaves a huge hole in the local art and culture scene. Besides regular programming of award-winning indie and alternative flicks that you'd be hard-pressed to find in mainstream cinemas, the venue has organised and played host to a myriad of inclusive, sometimes off-beat, events. Adding colour to the local events calendar include film festivals like the Singapore International Film Festival, Animation Nation, Pink Screen, drag shows, vintage markets, and charity fundraisers. "The Projector was also built and shaped in all forms by our fans and collaborators, and we're incredibly proud of what we've created together – a home for the creatives, misfits, and dreamers," says Karen Tan, founder of The Projector. "The Projector may be closing, but we hope its spirit will live on in the conversations, ideas, and communities we've nurtured."
