Liverpool icon sends clear warning to Man Utd - 'There'll be more Garnachos'
Alejandro Garnacho looks likely to leave Manchester United after falling out with Ruben Amorim, having expressed his frustration with his manager, and Graeme Souness believes it points to a "culture" problem at the club
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has warned Manchester United"there'll be more Alejandro Garnachos" if they don't change their culture at the club. Garnacho appears to have fallen out with manager Ruben Amorim after being benched for the Europa League final defeat against Tottenham - and left out altogether for the final day clash against Aston Villa.
Garnacho is the latest player to have clashed with Amorim after Marcus Rashford, with both players struggling to deliver on their promise after being dropped by Amorim at various points this season.
Rashford is almost certain to depart if United can identify a club who will pay their £40million asking price, while Garnacho is also expected to leave after Amorim reportedly told him he must "pray" he could find a new team. After their Europa League loss to Spurs, Garnacho admitted his frustration over not being picked and said the team's season was "s***".
Souness - who played 354 times for the Reds before managing them for three years in the 1990s - feels both players are examples of a poor culture in the dressing room and said there was "too much money and respect" influencing young players.
"The fact Alejandro Garnacho has been told he can leave Manchester United underlines why I have persistently said he is a classic example of a young player who has had too much too soon," he told the Daily Mail.
"That's too much admiration, too much money, too much respect from within the football club and too much from outside, from the public. It puts players like him in a headspace that is detrimental to their growth as a human being and as a football player. It's compounded by the fact he is at Manchester United where a player's profile, even before he has even appeared regularly for the club, is bigger and wider than with any other club in the country.
"Marcus Rashford, has one season of scoring 30 goals and what does the club do? Give him over £300,000 a week. Look at how that has worked out."
Souness claimed there weren't enough experienced leaders in the dressing room to help Garnacho stay grounded and cited Cristiano Ronaldo as a player who the youngster could have benefited learning more from. He insisted when he was a player, he felt "insignificant" despite being club captain, because manager Ronnie Moran kept them on their toes.
"You often hear United managers talk about the culture being wrong. Who does Garnacho have to look up to in that dressing room, that is setting an example? Someone he would want to become. They had the best example in the world and let him go: Cristiano Ronaldo. He would have been worth keeping for the example he set. Staying on after training, dedicating his lifestyle to the sport.
"At Liverpool you were never allowed to have a big head on your shoulders. That's why I cite Ronnie Moran as the greatest influence on my career. I was captain of Liverpool, but I felt insignificant. Statistics tell you we were pretty good, but Ronnie never let us become 'Billy Big Heads'."
Garnacho is now being linked with a move to Chelsea after returning from the club's post-season tour to Asia. The 20-year-old made it clear he was unhappy to travel after uploading a picture of the airport runway after getting back home, with the caption: "Finally".
Napoli have also been mentioned as an interested party in the player who managed 10 goals and nine assists in all competitions for United this season.

Bruno Fernandes reveals four reasons for staying at Man Utd after £300m offer
Manchester United were handed a major boost after Bruno Fernandes announced he had declined a huge move to Saudi Arabia this summer as the Portuguese playmaker insisted he wanted to stay at the top level Bruno Fernandes has made his reasons clear for wanting to stay at Manchester United and snub a lucrative move to Al-Hilal this summer. The United skipper looked certain to move to Saudi Arabia after reports Al-Hilal were ready to pay a £300million package to secure his signature. United would have collected a £100m transfer fee, with Bruno Fernandes being handed an eye-watering contract worth around £200m in a move that would see him join up with countrymen Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves. But Fernandes released a statement on Tuesday night explaining primarily that he wants to continue playing at the highest level possible in Europe and fully believes he is capable of doing so. 'It would have been an easy move," he said. "I had Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo there, two people I have a great friendship with. But I want to stay at the highest level, play in big competitions, because I still feel capable." Another factor was Ruben Amorim wanting him to stay at Old Trafford. The coach has always maintained he did not want to let his captain leave and hoped the Portugal international would spearhead the team's revival under his leadership. Speaking after their post-season tour in Asia, he said: "I think he wants to stay. He is saying no to a lot of things but he chose that he wants to win. I think he's really good and he needs to be on the best league in the world." United's support of Fernandes also helped his decision. The club hierarchy were relaxed about his future either way and although they missed out on a huge payday that would have eased their financial situation, having Fernandes on board will be a huge boost to their hopes of returning to for next season. The 30-year-old also cited his family as a major reason for him snubbing Saudi interest. He did not want to uproot his family from their settled life in Manchester and force a culture change in the Middle East. His wife Ana Pinho is said to have been crucial in the decision to stay. Fernandes explained: "I spoke with my family to understand if that was what I wanted for my future,' Fernandes said ahead of Portugal's Nations League semi-final against Germany tonight. "It was actually my wife who asked me — I never said yes or no. She put my professional priorities ahead of everything else." Now that he has clarified his position, Amorim will hope to have him on board for his rebuild of the team that has already seen him sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves, while Bryan Mbeumo is expected to join from Brentford imminently.

Neil Lennon lifts the lid on Premiership job snub and dugout chaos as ex Celtic boss targets history with Dunfermline
The former Hoops manager was linked with a string of top flight positions but explained on why he's up for Pars adventure Premiership manager jobs have become like buses. You wait for months for one to turn up then about five appear all at once. Neil Lennon could have hopped on board most of them – but the ticket to Dunfermline was the only one he wanted. The former Celtic and Hibs boss could easily have been facing the media this week wearing the colours of Dundee, Motherwell or Kilmarnock. Rangers or Hearts would have been a turn up for the books, but a fair amount of fans of the other three clubs would have welcomed Lennon in a heartbeat. But the man himself didn't give those gigs a second's thought. The seven-week stint as caretaker boss in these parts was enough to convince him to stick around for the long term. Lennon penned a two year deal this week and rather than managing back in the Premiership, his dream is to lead the Pars to the promised land. The Northern Irishman said: 'It's just because of the owner (James Bord) here. I really enjoyed the seven weeks and then enjoyed speaking to him about what the plans are. 'I got a good feel about it as well. I've always had a bit of loyalty in my career and felt I owed him that as well. 'My mind was made up weeks ago. I didn't speak to any other clubs or entertain it. 'I am really focused on the job in hand. I don't get excited very much at my age but this is really exciting me.' It must do, as Lennon could easily have settled for the quiet life, working as a respected and engaging pundit, watching the game from the sidelines. It's not how he's wired up though. Lennon – who admitted the door is open for Victor Wanyama to return – said: 'I know, but I would miss the edge. Talk to all coaches, they have that inner competitive edge, we all have it. 'You go and do the games as a pundit and then you get in the car afterwards and that's it. 'If you are a coach you are thinking about what is happening, what you need to do and so on, it's very stimulating. 'Yeah, some might like that it's done and dusted after the game when you are a pundit but I like that it's not. 'You need that edge. In a perverse sort of way I enjoy the chaos. You miss it. I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't think I still had plenty left in me and if I thought I couldn't make an impact. 'I had to ask all those questions of myself. I have liked the last couple of months. The football wasn't sparkling but we got the job done. Now we have a new page to write.' The book is already bursting at the seams though. Lennon has experienced the lot in the dugout, from the trophy laden joys of two spells with Celtic, promotion with Hibs and cup and Europa League success abroad. Then there were the struggles. The mayhem of the covid season and the failed 10-in-a-row bid with the Hoops, the shock sacking by Omonia and the brief crazy spell with Rapid Bucharest. It's been a wild ride but some things never change as Lennon said: 'You get all experiences as a manager. Sometimes you take the good ones for granted and that's what you learn as you get older, you have to enjoy the wins and enjoy the good times. 'The tough times, everyone experiences them. All the great managers have had big games where they've lost cup finals. 'What you want to do is go back, go again and rectify that. 'This one's different for me, no question and something I'm really looking forward to. 'So I've still got that experience and I think I can bring that to Dunfermline. 'I want to excite people. 'I might get into a few conflicts along the way….just to get the crowd going, the players going, more than anything. 'But it won't be dull!' It won't be easy either. Lennon is well aware the Championship is brutally tough to escape, especially next term with relegated St Johnstone and Ross County around. It might take a couple of seasons but he's in it for the long haul – and he'd love to secure a place in the club's illustrious history along with former heroes such as Jock Stein and Alex Ferguson. Lennon said: 'I see Fergie's face every day! I saw him a couple of weeks ago at the Airdrie game and told him I was sick of seeing him! 'Obviously there is Jock as well. I like it. There's a great history and tradition here. 'The owner now has good ideas. He said the club is under his skin now and it took him four goes to convince me but in the end he sold it to me. 'I felt I owed him something back. We want to make an impact and have people remember you for the right reasons – and that's what I am aiming to do. 'Going up is the ultimate objective. I have a two year contract and I think it will be difficult but not insurmountable to do that. 'Every other club in the league will be thinking the same.'
