India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya on high alert for Independence Day
Security was beefed up along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya in view of Independence Day, a BSF official said on Tuesday.
'Operation Alert' is being carried out in close coordination with the Meghalaya Police and other law enforcement agencies, he said.
Additional troops have been deployed in the forward areas, he said.
The operation includes intensified area domination, round-the-clock patrolling, surprise naka checks, and riverine patrols to plug border gaps, with a focus on countering cattle smuggling, contraband movement, and illegal crossings, he added.

'Operation Alert reflects the force's commitment to safeguarding national security during the festive season and preventing any disruption by inimical forces,' said OP Upadhyay, the inspector general of BSF's Meghalaya Frontier.
The operation will continue till August 16, maintaining a robust security grid across the entire frontier, he said.
Last week, a group of armed Bangladeshi men allegedly robbed a shop near the border in South West Khasi Hills district, and attempted to kidnap its owner. Six of those in the group, including a Bangladeshi Police constable, were arrested within the next two days.

Govt withdraws compulsory leave imposed on IPS officer
Bengaluru: The government on Monday appointed senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao as the DGP for Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, withdrawing the compulsory leave imposed on him following the arrest of his stepdaughter and actress Ranya Rao in connection with a gold smuggling case. Prior to this new role, he served as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation. 'The order of compulsory leave with respect to Dr K Ramachandra Rao, IPS (KN 1993) is hereby withdrawn and the officer is posted with immediate effect and until further orders as Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement in the upgraded vacant post,' a government order said. The post of Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement is declared equivalent in status and responsibilities to the cadre post of Director General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, Special Units & Economic offences, Bengaluru under Rule 12 of IPS (Pay) Rules 2016 as included in Schedule Il of the said rule, it said. Rao was sent on compulsory leave in March.

Indian Army foils infiltration bid along LoC in J&K's Uri sector
The Indian Army foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday. Mourning the loss of Sepoy Banoth Anil Kumar, the Indian Army's Chinar Corps said in a post on X on Tuesday, "Chinar Corps deeply regret the loss of the precious life of Braveheart Sepoy Banoth Anil Kumar, while performing operational duty along the Line of Control in Baramulla district. Chinar Warriors salute his immense valour and sacrifice, express deepest condolence and stand in solidarity with the bereaved family."

Delhi Police imposes traffic restrictions ahead of Independence Day celebrations
New Delhi [India], August 13 (ANI): Ahead of Independence Day, Delhi Police Additional CP Traffic, Dinesh Kumar Gupta, announced stringent traffic restrictions across the national capital. 'Restrictions were imposed on our borders from 10 last night, under which we do not allow any commercial vehicles to enter Delhi.
