PM Modi to open World Para Athletics Championships; Mondo track at JLN stadium to be ready in one month
The Paralympic Committee of India confirms that preparations for the World Para Athletics Championships are progressing on schedule. The Mondo tracks installation at both the competition and training venues is expected to be completed by September 1.
The global para athletics event will be hosted for the first time in India from September 27 to October 5 at the
Jawaharlal Nehru
Stadium in New Delhi. The tracks at both the main arena and adjacent training venue are being relaid specifically for these championships.
"We have completed 95% work of Mondo track laying inside main stadium as well as training area. Laying the base takes a lot of time, topping the base with Mondo does not take much time," Jhajharia told PTI in an interview.

"Work on the base is completed, laying of Mondo on top has started. Everything will be completed by September 1."
"Preparations for other things like transportation and accommodation of athletes, their escorts and officials, and other logistics have been according to schedule. Our aim is to host a hugely successful championships in all aspects and strengthen India's bid for 2036 Olympics and Paralympics."
Regarding track certification, Jhajharia addressed the timeline for World Athletics approval.
"World Athletics experts will come as soon as laying of the track is completed. It should not take much time (to get the certification). There is a lot of time between September 1 and September 27. Having Mondo tracks both in competition and training area is a big thing. Our athletes -- both able-bodied and para -- will now be able to train and compete on Mondo tracks which is widely used now," Jhajharia added.
The organizing committee has made extensive arrangements for para-friendly facilities at the event.
"We have contracted the DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation), they will give us around 100 para-friendly buses. The buses will be para-friendly, the wheelchair person will go inside. At the JLN stadium, there will huge number of wheelchairs available. There will also be space earmarked to accommodate 500 wheelchairs at the stands.
The biggest message will be that the championships is a para-friendly event. We are trying to provide the best facilities to the athletes, their escorts and officials.
"
The New Delhi championships has received confirmation from 107 countries, marking the highest participation in the event's history. Major para athletics nations including China, Brazil, and Great Britain will be participating.
The previous edition in Kobe, Japan saw 1073 athletes from 103 countries competing in 2024.
"107 countries have given us confirmation. So this is the highest ever in a World Para Athletics Championships in terms of number of countries taking part. All the top countries in para athletics like China, Brazil, Great Britain are taking part. In terms of total number of athletes, I am thinking that this will also be the highest but I cannot confirm now because Tuesday (August 12) is the deadline for sending entries to us.
We have received entries from more than 75% countries but the total number will be known only after the deadline."
India plans to field its largest contingent ever as the host nation. The country had sent approximately 40 athletes to the previous edition in Japan.
"Yes, absolutely, we will field our largest ever contingent. The final trial has been done and selection will be done very soon. The number of our athletes should be around 100."
The Paralympic Committee of India has extended an invitation to
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
for the opening ceremony.
"We are hoping that the Honourable Prime Minister will open the championships. We have sent a request letter to him and we are waiting for his answer. PM Modi has been a great support for para sports and para athletes. His support and encouragement before, during and after major events like the Paralympics, Para Asian Games and World Championships have been a source of strength and motivation for para athletes."
India aims to surpass its previous performance of 17 medals from the Japan championships.
"Our performance is getting better every Paralympics and World Championships. We will win more than 17 medals in Delhi. We are targeting a top-5 finish as against the sixth spot in Japan last year."
Athletes are preparing at various locations across India and abroad.
"Our players are preparing well, in Delhi, Jaipur, Bangalore, Gandhinagar, Sonipat and even abroad. The government and the PCI have provided whatever is required for them. We want to give freedom to the athletes, so that they can give good results. We let them stay and train wherever they want. Sumit is currently training in Sonepat (SAI Centre) and we expect him to win gold in front of the home crowd. I am even hoping him to break the world record.

Abhinav Bindra Named Among Nine IOC Mental Health Ambassadors
Last Updated: Abhinav Bindra has been named an IOC mental health ambassador to prioritise mental health in sports through open discussions and support. Abhinav Bindra, India's first-ever individual gold medallist at the Olympics, has been named one of the nine mental health ambassadors by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Alongside Abhinav Bindra, who secured gold in the men's 10m air rifle shooting at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the list includes Olympians Holly Bradshaw (British pole vaulter), Camille Cheng (swimmer from Hong Kong, China), Bruno Fratus (Brazilian swimmer), Gracie Gold (American figure skater), Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith (sprinter from Ivory Coast), Ryan Pini (swimmer from Papua New Guinea), Akani Simbine (South African sprinter), and Masomah Ali Zada (Afghan cyclist). 'The IOC believes that mental health is just as important as physical health, and no athlete should face challenges alone. That's why, as part of the IOC Mental Health Action Plan, we've brought together a group of Olympians from around the world to lead the way in creating a more open and supportive sporting environment," IOC said in a statement. 'The IOC Mental Health Ambassadors are using their voices and experiences to break down stigma, encourage honest conversations, and champion mental well-being in sport. 'Each Ambassador serves as a trusted advocate, helping to share evidence-based messages, offer valuable feedback on IOC mental health initiatives, and inspire open and honest conversations, within sport and beyond. 'Whether through social media, one-on-one conversations or IOC educational programmes, they're here to inspire and support the athlete community, and ensure that mental health remains a vital part of the high-performance environment. With athletes leading the conversation, we're working together to build a culture where mental health matters, and where every athlete feels safe, supported and heard," the statement concluded. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Sandhu wins Mysuru Open, clinches third title of season
Agency: Mysuru, Aug 15 (PTI) Yuvraj Sandhu clinched his third title of the 2025 season here on Friday with a thumping eight-shot win at Mysuru Open that also helped him consolidate his lead in the PGTI Order of Merit. Sandhu (61-65-62-61), who hails from Chandigarh, emerged wire-to-wire winner after an exceptional final round of nine-under 61, matching his tournament low from round one, that saw him end the week with an astounding total of 31-under 249. The 28-year-old Sandhu, an international winner, picked up the winner's cheque of Rs 15 that took his season's earnings to Rs 73,67,200, giving him a substantial lead of over Rs 12 lakh in the PGTI Order of Merit. As the preferred lie rule was in application through the week due to the rains preceding the event, Yuvraj's tournament total, the lowest ever on the PGTI, will not register as a PGTI record. Bangladesh's Jamal Hossain (62-65-64-66) came in second at a total of 23-under 257 following his effort of 66 in the final round. Delhi's Arjun Prasad (66-62-64-66) secured the third place at 22-under 258 after shooting a last round of 66. As a result, Arjun, one of the most consistent performers this season with eight top-10s to his credit, moved up from third to second place in the PGTI's money list with season's earnings of Rs. 61,12,549. Sandhu, the leader from round one till the end, began the last day with a healthy three-shot lead. Sandhu went on to strengthen his position at the top early on day four with five birdies on the front-nine. His drive on the Par-4 third hole found the green while he chipped-in and produced a great chip for a tap-in on the next two holes. On the back nine, Sandhu continued his march towards the title by adding four more birdies courtesy a couple of terrific tee shots and his second chip-in of the day on the 11th. 'Winning with a 31-under score and a huge margin to add to that is something that every professional golfer dreams of. I dedicate this win to my grandmother who we lost about two months back and also to my caddie Sonu who did an outstanding job this week," Sandhu said. 'I had a side bet with my caddie that I will break my previous PGTI record of 10-under by shooting an 11-under today. Unfortunately, I couldn't achieve that today but it was something that motivated me through the round." Jamal Hossain, who was overnight second, came up with six birdies on the day but his early double-bogey made it hard for him to catch up with a rampaging Yuvraj. Mysuru's Dhruv Bopanna had the best finish among the local professionals as he totalled three-under 277 to end up in tied 53rd position.
