Madurai corporation to hire 35 more tankers to supply water

1 2 Madurai: Madurai corporation has decided to hire 35 additional tanker lorries to tackle water supply issues in areas with old pipeline networks and areas experiencing low pressure. The decision taken as part of measures to address distribution gaps and maintain service during emergency repairs. A senior corporation official said the new fleet will include 20 tankers with a capacity of 10,000 litres each and 15 tankers with a capacity of 6,000 litres. At present, the corporation has 40 hired tankers for regular water supply in areas not fully covered by pipelines as well as areas facing disruptions. Officials said the newly laid drinking water pipelines under the Mullaperiyar drinking water scheme improved supply coverage but also require careful monitoring in the initial phase to address technical snags. "Whenever there is a drop in pressure or a pipeline leak, tankers are the quickest way to ensure households continue to receive water," the official said. The additional tankers will be hired soon and will be pressed into service ahead of the complete launch of the Mullaperiyar scheme, the official added. The corporation has also urged residents to promptly report supply issues through its online portal so that water is supplied through tankers without much disruptions.
