Brady Singer tosses gem to secure Reds sweep of Rays

Reuters27-07-2025
July 27 - Brady Singer bounced back from one of his worst outings of the season by allowing just one run in 7 1/3 innings as the Cincinnati Reds completed a three-game series sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays, 2-1, Sunday in Cincinnati.
The Reds have followed up a three-game skid with a four-game winning streak and improved to 6-3 since the All-Star break, with Thursday's trade deadline looming. Cincinnati also improved to 56-50, a season-high six games over .500.
Tampa Bay, on the other hand, lost its seventh straight on the road and has won just three of 16 on the road since a sweep of Kansas City June 24-26. Overall, the Rays have lost 18 of 25 since June 27.
Singer (8-8) allowed just one run and three hits over 7 1/3 innings, six days after allowing seven runs over 2 1/3 innings last Monday in a 10-8 loss to Washington. Throwing for a third consecutive day, Emilio Pagan pitched a scoreless ninth for his 22nd save.
The game didn't start smoothly for Singer, who allowed a leadoff single to Chandler Simpson and hit the second batter Yandy Diaz with a pitch.
But catcher Jose Trevino threw out Simpson trying to steal second to help Singer get out of further trouble. Singer retired the next six batters before hitting Matt Thaiss with one out in the third.
Singer lost his shutout with one out in the eighth when Taylor Walls belted a first-pitch breaking ball to the seats in right for his fourth homer, cutting Cincinnati's lead to 2-1.
It was Walls' error on Saturday night that opened the door for Cincinnati's first two runs in a 6-2 Cincinnati victory. The frustration continued Sunday in the first inning when he could not field a chopper over the mound from Austin Hays cleanly, allowing TJ Friedl to score from second base.
Gavin Lux followed with a chopper that first baseman Jonathan Aranda fielded, but he couldn't throw out Matt McLain at the plate. Instead Aranda threw onto first for an RBI groundout and it was 2-0 Cincinnati.
It was a tough luck start for right hander Shane Baz (8-7), who threw four shutout innings after the two-run first. Baz allowed just those two runs and five hits over five innings, striking out five and walking two.

Spencer Horwitz drives in 6, as Pirates beat Rockies

August 3 - Spencer Horwitz homered twice, doubled and drove in a career-high six runs, Tommy Pham also went deep, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies 9-5 in Denver on Sunday. Nick Gonzales had four hits for Pittsburgh, which salvaged the finale of the three-game series. Mickey Moniak, Hunter Goodman and Jordan Beck hit consecutive home runs in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough for Colorado, which was vying for its first home sweep of the season. Beck finished with two hits before being ejected in the seventh inning, and Yanquiel Fernandez also had two hits for the Rockies. The Pirates jumped out to a lead for the third straight game. Horwitz led off the day with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Gonzales single. Pham made it 3-0 with a two-out, two-run homer to center. It was his fifth of the season. Horwitz made it 5-0 when he followed a walk to Jared Triolo with his first home run of the day, and Colorado got a run back in the fourth on Beck's RBI single. Pittsburgh extended its lead in the sixth. Jack Suwinski walked and went to third on Triolo's single. Ryan Rolison relieved Bradley Blalock, and Horwitz hit a ball to the second deck in right to make it 8-1. Blalock (1-3) gave up seven runs on six hits and walked four in 5-2/3 innings. The Rockies rallied against Mitch Keller in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Freeman led off with a walk and Moniak homered to right, his 17th, to make it 8-3. Goodman followed with his 21st homer, a 451-foot shot to the concourse in left, and Beck made it three straight homers with his 14th of the season. That was all for Keller (5-10), who allowed five runs on seven hits in five-plus innings. The Pirates added an insurance run in the eighth inning when reliever Angel Chivilli hit Suwinski and Henry Davis leading off, both moved up on a groundout and Suwinski scored on another groundout. --Field Level Media

Julio Rodriguez hits 100th career homer as Mariners edge Rangers

August 3 - Julio Rodriguez hit a milestone home run as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Texas Rangers 5-4 Sunday afternoon. Jorge Polanco and J.P. Crawford also went deep for the Mariners, who took three of four games in the series between the American League West rivals and improved to 10-3 against Texas this season. Rodriguez's two-run homer in the third inning off Jacob deGrom (10-4) was the 100th of his career and made him the first player in major league history to have 20 homers and 20 stolen bases in each of their first four years. Adolis Garcia went 3-for-3 with a double and home run for the Rangers and Corey Seager also homered. Rookie Logan Evans (5-4) remained unbeaten in six starts at T-Mobile Park. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits over five innings, with no walks and three strikeouts. Andres Munoz pitched a scoreless ninth for his 25th save of the season. Polanco homered to right field with one out in the bottom of the second to open the scoring. The Rangers took the lead in the third as Josh Smith lined a two-out single to right and Seager hit a shot to deep left-center that just eluded Rodriguez's reach and bounced off the top of the outfield wall and over. Cal Raleigh walked with two outs in the bottom of the inning and Rodriguez homered to right-center to put Seattle up 3-2. Garcia led off the fourth with a double into the left-field corner and, with two outs, Rowdy Tellez double off the wall in left to tie it. The Mariners again responded in the bottom of the frame as Dominic Canzone drew a two-out walk and Crawford homered to right for a 5-3 lead. Garcia went deep to left-center with one out in the sixth off reliever Carlos Vargas to complete the scoring. DeGrom gave up five runs on four hits in five innings. He walked three and fanned five. --Field Level Media
