Saints' sports teams have once again showcased their talent and determination, bringing home three gold medals and one silver from the recent SACSSA tournaments held in May.
Netball Triumphs Across the Board
The junior netball teams delivered outstanding performances at the SACSSA Junior Netball Tournament on Saturday, 31 May. The u/9 team claimed gold in a tense 4-3 final against Westville, showing remarkable composure, teamwork, and grit under pressure. Their victory is a credit to Coaches Ivan, Claudio, and Wame, whose guidance and dedication have been instrumental in developing the young players.
Not to be outdone, the u/11 netball team also impressed, earning silver after a series of hard-fought matches that demonstrated their skill and sportsmanship.
Meanwhile, a historic win came earlier in the month for our High School u/17 netball team at the SACSSA Senior Netball Tournament on Saturday, 17 May. For the first time in Saints' history, the u/17s secured the gold medal after a thrilling 8-7 final win over Rabboni. The match was clinched in dramatic fashion with a last-second save by goalkeeper Gigi Padi. Saints Sports Coordinator Claudio Lucas praised the team's disciplined preparation and spirit, highlighting this milestone as a testament to the school's growing netball programme.
'In the future we want to grow Netball at Saints by playing in more competitions against top level schools. We have invested a lot in our coaches as well to get them to the next level. We want to play in the Super League against the best in North-West,' stated Lucas.
Soccer Stars Make Their Mark
The u/19 girls' soccer team made Saints history once again by winning the SACSSA Senior Soccer Tournament for the third consecutive year on Saturday, 24 May. It was an all-Saints final, with the B-team edging out the A-team in a gripping extra-time finish, thanks to a decisive goal by Tshwanelo Mathang. Coach Dikeledi applauded the girls' determination, saying, 'We wanted to change the narrative… The girls had a point to prove.'
The u/15 boys also delivered, conceding just one goal throughout the tournament. Despite a narrow loss in the penalty shootout, they finished fourth overall, highlighting the depth of talent across all age groups at Saints.

Nortjé: Bulls in full Test mode for crucial URC semi-final against Sharks

Bulls skipper Ruan Nortjé says his side are preparing for their URC semi-final showdown with the Sharks like a Test match, emphasising focus, discipline and set-piece dominance ahead of Saturday's all-South African clash at Loftus. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Bulls captain Ruan Nortjé has acknowledged the mental and physical challenge posed by facing the Sharks in the upcoming United Rugby Championship (URC) semi-final at Loftus Versfeld. Despite the Sharks' dramatic victory over Munster in the quarter-finals, Nortjé wants his side to remain focused on the task ahead, highlighting the importance of resilience and executing their gameplan on Saturday (6.15pm kick-off). 'When we reach the play-offs, we try to always get ourselves in the headspace of Test-match level preparation,' said Nortjé ahead of the clash. 'We had the same mentality against Edinburgh, and it will be more of the same this weekend. The fact that it is a South African derby just adds more fuel, excitement, and tension. So, we have to ensure that we are mentally prepared and get our game plan ready for what awaits.' Nortjé added that they cannot afford to switch off for even one minute or concede a yellow card. He highlighted lapses in concentration against Edinburgh, which allowed the Scottish club to mount a strong attack in the first half when the Bulls were down to 14 men. The Bulls trailed 21–8 at one stage, but their fightback underscored their championship credentials. However, he warned that they must be wary of the Sharks' scrum, which could provide a potent attacking platform. 'The Sharks were definitely brilliant scrum-wise last weekend. I think that's a massive part of what brought them through that game, so I must give them credit — the whole front row. It's definitely going to be a massive battle at the set-piece. "We can only prepare as well as we can and ensure we are ready when Saturday comes. We must be composed and make swift changes on the field — be ready for anything, and expect anything.' 'We are blessed to play in another semi-final. We know there are a lot of other teams that would also want to be in this position, and that are capable of being in the semi-final.' Apart from the forwards, he pointed to the Sharks' half-backs, Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse, as major threats, along with inside centre André Esterhuizen as their primary strike-runner. He knows the Durbanites thrive on unpredictability and moments of individual brilliance, making it essential for the Bulls to stay composed and disciplined. Nortjé stressed the need to trust their systems, rely on their set-piece strength, and not allow the Sharks' high tempo and creativity to disrupt their game plan. Maintaining focus and emotional control will be key to securing a place in the final.

Coco Gauff returns to French Open quarters, vows to 'keep fighting'

Photo: Anne-Christine Poujoulat/AFP Image: Anne-Christine Poujoulat/AFP Coco Gauff reached a fifth successive French Open quarter-final on Monday as the world number two brushed Russian 20th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova aside 6-0, 7-5. Gauff raced through the opening set backed by three breaks of serve. Alexandrova put up more of a fight in the second set but Gauff eventually closed out victory in 82 minutes. "It feels great to be back in the quarters here, and really happy with how I played today and hopefully can keep going," said Gauff. The 21-year-old Gauff will play reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys in an all-American quarter-final on Wednesday. Gauff's 15 wins on clay this year are tied for the most alongside Elina Svitolina, another player still in the running at Roland Garros. Former US Open champion Gauff puts her success on the surface down to her unwavering belief that she can turn a match in her favour no matter the score. She is hoping to make it third time lucky at the French Open after losing in the final in Madrid and Rome last month. "I have learned in the last two tournaments, especially in Rome and Madrid, losing the opening set in the first round of both of those tournaments and making the final, it just shows you have to keep fighting for every match and keep fighting for every point," said Gauff. "Because anything can happen in a tournament. "So I think if I want to be more consistent on tour, I think that's something I have to continue to do." Gauff made her first Grand Slam final in Paris in 2022 at the age of just 18. She was beaten comfortably by Iga Swiatek on that occasion but feels she is peaking at the right time again in her quest for a second major title. Swiatek has also knocked Gauff out each of the past two years at Roland Garros; in the quarter-finals in 2023 and then in the semi-finals a year ago. "I think I'm less nervous going into matches, for sure, and knowing just the ups and downs of tennis and of a tennis match," said Gauff. "I still feel the years here I feel like I get better with each match. I felt like that was something that I did in '22 and last year as well, and something I'm doing here right now. "Yeah, I think if I can keep just making those details a little bit better, hopefully I can do even better than I did last year."
