Nick Saban Reveals Plans For Taking Over Lee Corso's Headgear Picks

Yahoo21-05-2025
With Lee Corso on his way out the door after 38 seasons as part of ESPN's College GameDay, the television program's mascot headgear picks tradition won't be the same. It's not likely that former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban takes over in that department.
But he didn't completely rule it out, either.

"Emmy Award-winner Nick Saban on whether he will take over headgear picks from Lee Corso on College Gameday: 'I hope not ... But that's probably not my decision,'" Bama 247's Mike Rodak wrote Tuesday on X, referencing Saban's interview on "The Rick Burgess Show" last week.
Corso, a former collegiate head coach, has become a beloved personality to those passionate about the sport.
'Lee Corso is a phenomenal person,' Saban said. 'A real professional, has been a part of the show and the tradition of the show for 20-something years. We're all gonna miss him.'
Nick Saban spoke during the NFL Draft on his biggest recruiting mistake.Yahoo Sports
Corso has made 430 mascot headgear selections, sporting a 286-144 record. He's chosen the Ohio State Buckeyes 45 times and Alabama 38. A bulk of the latter came during Nick Saban's time in charge of the program.

Along with his television duties, Saban could soon have something else on his plate as the powers that be try to figure out how to solve college football's issues.
"I know there's been a lot of stuff out there about some commission or whatever," Saban said Tuesday. "I don't think we need a commission. I've said that before. I think we need -- we know what the issues are, we just have to have people who are willing to move those and solve those and create some solutions for some of those issues.
"I'm all for being a consultant to anybody who would think that my experience would be beneficial to helping create some of those solutions."

ESPN Receives Strong 'Warning' About Monica McNutt

ESPN Receives Strong 'Warning' About Monica McNutt originally appeared on The Spun. ESPN analyst Monica McNutt may have lost her hosting privileges after making an embarrassing mistake on "First Take." At the very least, there might be friction behind the scenes. McNutt joined ESPN in 2019 as an ACC Network analyst. Two years later, she started making regular appearances on "SportsCenter" and "NBA Today." She also became a key figure for the network's coverage of the WNBA and women's college basketball. When she's not part of ESPN's national coverage, she's calling games on the radio for the New York Knicks. Prior to becoming an analyst for ESPN, McNutt made appearances on Fox Sports 1, CBS Sports Network and Turner/NBA TV. She was even included in NBC's coverage of the 2021 Summer Olympics. So what went wrong for McNutt? On last Friday's episode of "First Take," she didn't realize special guest Druski was wearing a Barry Sanders jersey. She assumed his jersey was affiliated with Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. "It's a blast to have you here, thank you so much for joining us. The jersey, obviously, ties to Shedeur Sanders," McNutt told Druski. The popular comedian quickly replied, "No, no, no, no, no. This is, uh, Barry Sanders." McNutt could lose the locker room at ESPN. According to OutKick, "countless ESPN staffers" were embarrassed by McNutt's mistake. "Since Saturday, OutKick has heard from countless ESPN staffers about the segment. Many prefaced their reactions with, "I like Monica, but …" Still, they were embarrassed—for her, for the producers, for management, and for the ESPN brand," Bobby Burack wrote. "Barry Sanders is one of the greatest players in NFL history. McNutt didn't know who he is. That's not a blunder. That's a lack of knowledge, history, and preparation. It's inexcusable." Some fans called out ESPN over the weekend, declaring that McNutt should be fired. ESPN has McNutt under contract for a few more years. Back in October 2024, ESPN agreed to a new contract with McNutt. As part of that agreement, she has received an expanded role for the network's NBA and WNBA coverage. If ESPN wants to avoid causing any controversy this fall, McNutt should stick to covering basketball. Besides, the network has plenty of other analysts to cover the NFL, including Ryan Clark, Dan Orlovsky and Marcus Spears. We'll see if ESPN adjusts McNutt's role on "First Take" or allows last week's Barry Sanders blunder to fly. ESPN Receives Strong 'Warning' About Monica McNutt first appeared on The Spun on Aug 19, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared.

Bama in the NFL: Former Alabama kicker among preseason Week 2 standouts

Week 2 of the 2025 NFL preseason has now officially passed, which means that we are now yet another weekend closer to the start of the regular season. When taking a look back at this past weekend as well, it was yet another solid slate of games for former Alabama Crimson Tide players in the NFL, as many of the same names from Week 1 of the preseason made an impact yet again in Week 2. Many of these names are already established starters with their respective teams, while others are either competing for a starting spot, or are rookies taking the field for the first time at the professional level. Let's take a look at five of the biggest performances from former Alabama stars during Week 2 of the 2025 NFL preseason. Will Reichard, Kicker - Minnesota Vikings A standout from Week 1, Reichard once again impressed this past weekend during Minnesota's 20-12 loss to New England, accounting for each of the Vikings' points. Reichard was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts in the loss, making from yards of 34, 54, 47, and 27. Anfernee Jennings, Outside Linebacker - New England Patriots Jennings was likely Alabama's most impressive defensive performance from this past weekend, finishing with three tackles, three sacks, three TFL, and three quarterback hits during New England's matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. The Patriots defeated the Vikings, 20-12. Jihaad Campbell, Inside Linebacker - Philadelphia Eagles The rookie first round pick had likely his top showing yet of the preseason during Philadelphia's 22-13 loss against the Browns. Campbell finished with four tackles, one sack, one TFL, and one quarterback hit. Henry To'oTo'o, Inside Linebacker - Houston Texans To'oTo'o finished as the Texans leading tackler during Houston's 20-3 win over the Carolina Panthers. The former Alabama linebacker ended the game with five tackles, three of which were solo. Irv Smith Jr., Tight End - Houston Texans Rounding out this week's five standouts is Smith, who led Houston in receiving during the Texans 20-3 win over the Panthers. Smith finished with five receptions for 46 yards, hauling in each of his targets.
