Nagpur: A recruitment drive by the NMC for temporary balwadi (pre-primary) teachers under education department turned into a chaotic and emotional scene on Wednesday, as dozens of BEd and DEd-qualified aspirants accused the civic body of issuing a misleading advertisement.
According to the candidates, the advertisement (Advt No. 197, dated June 18) clearly mentioned that graduates from any stream holding either a DEd or ECCE (Early Childhood Care and Education) diploma would be eligible for the walk-in interviews scheduled on June 26. However, upon arrival at the venue, several applicants were allegedly turned away by staff, who reportedly told them they were not eligible despite fulfilling the advertised qualifications.
"The advt said DEd-holders and even general graduates could apply. But the officials told us to leave, saying BEd and DEd candidates aren't eligible," said a candidate, holding back tears.
The civic body had announced 25 temporary positions for balwadi teachers across Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, and English medium schools, on a fixed monthly honorarium of Rs20,000.
As per the notification, recruitment was to be conducted purely on a contractual basis for the academic year 2025-26, with walk-in interviews scheduled on June 26 from 8am to 11am.
The candidates have submitted a collective complaint to municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, who assured to look into their grievances.

Nashik officials to begin recovery of duplicate Covid ex gratia payments

Nashik: The district administration in Nashik has instructed the civil surgeon and medical officers of Nashik Municipal Corporation and Malegaon Corporation to recover the ex gratia amounts potentially disbursed multiple times to the relatives of people who have died due to Covid. State govt provided an ex gratia amount of Rs 50,000 to the families of each person who died from Covid infection during the pandemic. However, the state disaster management department reported that the aid was disbursed more than once in certain instances. Consequently, govt initiated recovery actions. "Govt scanned the applications and the beneficiaries who were given the aid. It found 137 cases in Nashik district where ex gratia was given multiple times, either to the same account or to two different accounts for the same deceased. State govt has now started the recovery process," said resident deputy district collector Rajendra Wagh. Govt notified the offices concerned— the civil surgeon handling death applications in Nashik's rural areas, the medical officers of NMC and Malegaon Corporation regarding deaths in their respective jurisdictions — about the recipients. "The offices will have to conduct the inquiry into the same and verify the multiple payments. If so, then the money has to be recovered. People have also been informed about the same, and they are expected to get in touch with the office concerned and return the money," the officer said. The officer also warned that if people failed to provide the information and return the money, govt would be compelled to take action against the beneficiaries under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act 2005.

Probe ordered into alleged TDR scam on reserved land in Deolali

Nashik: On Thursday, Ram Shinde, the chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, directed the civic and district administration to investigate an alleged Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) scam related to the acquisition of land reserved for public amenities in the Deolali area of Nashik city. He instructed them to submit a report within 15 days. The directive emerged during a meeting with the relevant officials following a complaint that the Nashik Municipal Corporation issued TDR certificates to a landowner at rates exceeding the govt market value in exchange for land in Survey No. 295 at Deolali within the NMC limits, designated for a garden, school, and the 18m DP Road. The meeting took place at Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai on Thursday. Ram Shinde, the state legislative council chairman, said the complaint indicates NMC issued TDR certificates to the landowner concerned at a rate of Rs 25,100 per sqmt, while govt market value of the reserved land at Deolali was Rs 6,500 per sqmt. At first glance, this appears to have resulted in losses to state govt. Shinde asked the NMC commissioner, inspector-general of Registration and Controller of Stamps, and district collector to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged TDR scam and submit the report within 15 days. Shinde also instructed that if the inquiry establishes the facts, criminal cases should be filed immediately against those found guilty during the probe. The officials attended the meeting via video conference.
