Power outage disrupts last day of Cannes Film Festival; police investigating possible arson
A major power outage struck southeastern France on Saturday morning, disrupting traffic and briefly halting events at the Cannes Film Festival as the prestigious event prepared to hand out its top prize.
Power was restored around 3 p.m. local time, as music began blasting again from beachfront speakers. The end of the blackout was greeted with loud cheers from locals.
Earlier, about 160,000 households in the Alpes-Maritimes department lost electricity after a high-voltage line fell Saturday morning, electricity network operator RTE said on X. The outage came hours after a fire at an electrical substation near Cannes overnight had already weakened the grid.
Police have opened an investigation into possible arson.
"We are looking into the likelihood of a fire being started deliberately," said a spokesperson for the French national gendarmerie.

Cannes Film Festival organizers confirmed the outage affected the early activities of Saturday and said the Palais des Festivals — the Croisette's main venue — had switched to an independent power supply.
"All scheduled events and screenings, including the Closing Ceremony, will proceed as planned and under normal conditions," the statement said. "At this stage, the cause of the outage has not yet been identified. Restoration efforts are underway."
Traffic lights in parts of Cannes and the surrounding city of Antibes stopped working after 10 a.m. local time, leading to traffic jams and confusion in city centers. Most shops along the Croisette remained closed, and local food kiosks were only accepting cash. Train service in Cannes was also disrupted.
Screenings at the Cineum, one of the festival's satellite venues, were briefly suspended, the festival added.
The lineup was unveiled last month for Cannes.

Here, Hadera talks to Vogue about Highest 2 Lowest's dreamy Cannes premiere, being schooled (quite happily!) by Washington on set, and what she'd like to do next. Vogue: Highest 2 Lowest had its world premiere at Cannes this year. How did you approach getting dressed for that red carpet? How do you like to feel in those moments? Ilfenesh Hadera: I mean, here's the thing. I'm 39. I grew up in Manhattan. I have a real sense of my own style, what I think works, what I like, and maybe I play it safe, but generally, if I don't feel good in it, I'm not going out in it. Not for the sake of a brand relationship, not for the sake of pushing comfort zones. I feel like if you don't feel good, you look self-conscious, and it shows. And when you're at a premiere, you're meant to be celebrating your hard work and your project and feeling good, and you should own the moment. Cannes was kind of a funny moment. I'm not a huge dreamer—I like to set goals and be realistic about things and kind of be in the moment and not dream about the future too much, because I think it does detract a little bit from where you're at. But Cannes has always been a temple of cinema. There's so much history, and I really wanted the look to be perfect. I ended up at the Albright Fashion Library, and they styled the look the day before I took off. I've never in my life worn polka dots, but I felt great, and it felt appropriate.

The Surreal Family Tree of a French R.P.G.
The surreal role-playing game Off, in which players take control of an entity in a black-and-white baseball uniform who is sent on a mission to 'purify the world,' had the steepest of uphill battles when it was released in 2008. Off was freeware, meaning it was not available for distribution on popular digital stores like Steam. Neither its designer nor composer were known figures in the video game industry. And it was in French. But nearly two decades later, after word of mouth among developers and fans, Off's footprints can be found in many R.P.G.s — Omori, Everhood, Lisa the Painful and the 2015 hit Undertale — that feature surreal stories and metacommentary. This week, a remastered version of Off was released for the PC and the Switch. 'It was never supposed to be a big game,' said Off's designer, Mortis Ghost, who primarily works as a comic book artist in Belgium. He added: 'I was like, if I've got 50 players, I'm really happy about it. That was my expectations at the time, so everything since is crazy.' The interest in Off was propelled by developers familiar with its game engine, RPG Maker, and fans of similarly ethereal R.P.G.s like Yume Nikki and the Mother series. Over time, a community formed. Fans created English translations, including a popular one shared in 2011 on the forums of a gathering hub for fans of Mother, known as Earthbound outside Japan.
