17 liquor vendors fined Rs 8.5 lakh for overpricing in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: In a first-of-its-kind large-scale action in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, the state excise department penalised 17 liquor vendors for selling alcohol at rates higher than the maximum retail price (MRP). The department imposed a collective fine of Rs 8.5 lakh on the offenders following a special enforcement drive. Authorities said this was the first large-scale action in the district since the June 2025 price hike. Repeat offenders face licence suspension or cancellation, warned district collector Dilip Swami. According to officials, liquor prices in Maharashtra were revised in June 2025. Soon after, the department began receiving complaints that some licensed country liquor retailers in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district were overcharging customers in violation of the prescribed rates. Acting on these inputs, the excise department launched an intensive district-wide inspection campaign to check compliance. During the drive, officials visited multiple outlets and verified sale prices against the MRP printed on bottles. The inspection revealed that 17 country liquor vendors were charging customers above the permitted rates. Offences were registered against all the erring licence holders. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Wildlife Cameras Capture What No One Should See Ohi Blog Undo Collector Dilip Swami, who approved the penalties, said the total fine amounted to Rs 8.5 lakh. He stressed that this was the first time such an extensive crackdown was carried out against liquor vendors in the district for MRP violations. "Strict action will be taken against licence holders who repeatedly flout the rules. Penalties could include suspension or even permanent cancellation of their licences," said Swami. Officials said the enforcement was aimed at protecting consumers from unfair pricing and ensuring that retail sales strictly adhered to state-mandated rates. The department has urged people to report any instances of overpricing at liquor outlets. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Delhi's Big Step To Clean Up Yamuna - A Rs 917-Crore Plan Approved
New Delhi: In a significant step toward cleaning the Yamuna, the Delhi Jal Board has approved projects worth Rs 917 crore to boost the capital's sewage treatment capacity by 51.5 million gallons per day. The move is expected to sharply reduce the flow of untreated water into the river, one of the biggest contributors to its pollution. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier directed the Delhi government to nearly double its sewage treatment capacity to 1,500 million gallons per day by 2028 as part of the ongoing efforts to clean the river. Major Upgrades at Yamuna Vihar and Keshopur The largest expansion will take place at Yamuna Vihar, where the capacity of the existing sewage treatment plant will rise from 25 MGD to 40 MGD. Alongside this, a new 15 MGD plant will be built on the site. At Keshopur, the current 12 MGD facility will be upgraded to 18 MGD. South Delhi Plants to Get a Boost Five sewage plants in South Delhi will also see capacity upgrades under the new plan, further strengthening the city's wastewater management network. Long-Term Operations & Maintenance Each project will include operations and maintenance for 11-12 years, ensuring sustained efficiency and compliance with environmental norms. A Cleaner Yamuna in Sight? Officials say the expanded infrastructure will significantly cut the volume of untreated sewage entering the Yamuna, a problem that has plagued the river for decades. Environmental experts have welcomed the move, noting that sustained investment in sewage treatment is critical to reviving the Yamuna's ecosystem and improving water quality for communities living along its banks. Cleaning the Yamuna has long been one of the BJP-led Delhi government's big promises, framed as both an environmental necessity and a public health goal. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Verma have repeatedly said the river's revival will be a key test of their term in office.
