JOHOR BARU: Preparations for the PKR National Congress, to be held from tomorrow, are going smoothly, said the party's secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh.
She said the preparations included for the national congress of the party wings, Youth and Wanita PKR, as well as the process for the election of the party's top positions.
"Based on my observation at the location, preparations are going smoothly and according to plan.
"I am checking the list of speakers and invitees to see if they have responded (to attend) or not," she told Bernama.
Fuziah said this includes invitations to party leaders in the Madani government to attend the PKR National Congress.
The opening ceremony for the Youth National Congress and Wanita PKR Congress will be held simultaneously at 8pm tomorrow.
The congress proper for both wings will be held from 7am to 6pm the next day (May 23), followed by a policy speech by the party president, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The 2025 PKR elections for the Central Leadership Council, PKR Youth Leadership Council and Wanita PKR Leadership Council levels will also take place on the same day.

Law to hold companies to task needed, says Azalina

PETALING JAYA: There should be more decisive action against those responsible for road accidents that result in loss of life, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pic). The Law and Institutional Reform Minister said there is a need to reassess the effectiveness of law enforcement. 'Perhaps it is time to evaluate our laws and consider introducing changes to the Penal Code or enacting a new law, akin to the United Kingdom's approach,' she said in a Facebook post yesterday. She was referring to the UK's Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act, which prosecutes companies for safety management failures leading to death. 'This legislation allows for companies to be held accountable for negligence that results in fatalities,' she said. Azalina said the Act was a response to workplace fatalities where corporate entities previously evaded criminal liability. 'This is especially relevant for companies providing transportation services, as it involves human lives,' she added. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry has a standard operating procedure, including on safety checks, concerning the use of buses by student groups. She said the ministry has directed the Kedah Education Department to look into the welfare of a couple, both teachers, who were involved in the accident with the bus in Gerik, Perak. The couple is receiving treatment at Hospital Baling, Kedah. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the road where the accident happened is in good condition and was last maintained on Friday. He dispelled talk about the existence of potholes on that stretch had caused the bus tyre to burst thus leading to the tragedy. 'I would like to state that there was no punctured tyre and there were no potholes on that section,' he told reporters in Tuaran, Sabah, Bernama reported. Ahmad said a check at the location showed that there is a road sign warning of a bend ahead in the area. 'However, whatever happens, we will leave it to the special task force to investigate the accident. We do not want to make accusations, especially about technical issues,' he said. Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, chairman of the Alliance for a Safe Community, called for an overhaul of safety measures for commercial vehicles. 'It's time to elevate our commitment to road safety and ensure that every journey is as safe as it can be,' he said, highlighting the need for strict compliance with the Industry Code of Practice of the Land Public Transport Agency. He cited the mandatory elements that bus and truck operators must adhere to, which include appointing a safety officer, utilising GPS for monitoring speed and driver behaviour, and establishing robust emergency response plans. Lee also noted the importance of enhancing driver management, vehicle upkeep and journey planning to create a safer transportation environment. 'We must prioritise rigorous training, regular vehicle checks and vigilant route management,' he added.

Merit alone won't work in multiracial Malaysia, says Fuziah

Deputy domestic trade and cost of living minister Fuziah Salleh said terms like 'tolerance' fall short in capturing what a harmonious society should aim for. PETALING JAYA : A senator has argued that a purely merit-based system may be impractical in Malaysia, suggesting that a proportional approach would better reflect the country's multiracial make-up. Fuziah Salleh, the deputy domestic trade and cost of living minister, said merit should be applied with consideration for ethnic representation, adding that opportunities and benefits should be distributed in proportion to the population. 'For example, if 60% of the population belongs to a certain ethnic group, then merit should be applied within that proportion,' she said during yesterday's recording of BBC World Questions at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre. Fuziah, who is also the PKR secretary-general, said her party's constitution already reflects this principle by mandating representation from all major communities. She was responding to a question on how Malaysia can reconcile its secular and democratic values with the continued dominance of race-based policies that favour the Malay-Muslim majority. She said that PKR continues to promote a needs-based policy approach, a shift introduced by party president Anwar Ibrahim more than a decade ago to replace race-based affirmative action. 'It's not about race, it's about need. 'We're trying to educate people that benefits are not a right simply because they belong to a certain group. They should be based on socioeconomic status.' She said PKR also conducts regular internal training sessions to help members understand why policies such as property discounts should be based on need rather than ethnicity. 'Why should a high-income Malay receive the same 10% discount as a poor Indian? We need to reorient our thinking, away from race-based entitlement,' she said. Fuziah also expressed hope that her party's push for needs-based policies would eventually be reflected in national government policies as well. On the topic of national unity, she said terms like 'tolerance' fall short in capturing what a harmonious society should aim for. 'I don't like the word 'tolerance'. It implies merely putting up with each other. It should be about respect, understanding, and embracing what each community stands for,' she said. Malaysia has implemented race-based affirmative action policies since the introduction of the New Economic Policy in 1971, aimed at improving the socioeconomic position of the Bumiputeras – primarily the Malays and indigenous groups. While these policies have helped reduce poverty and increase Malay participation in the economy, critics argue that they have created systemic inequalities by sidelining poorer individuals from other ethnic communities.

Immersive training key to stronger women's leadership, says Nancy

PUTRAJAYA: Efforts to enhance women's participation at all levels of society must go beyond representation to include exposure and training, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri (pic). The Women, Family and Community Development Minister emphasised the importance of sustained and accessible leadership development for women. 'The key is exposure: giving women opportunities to connect, engage and learn from one another,' she told reporters after launching the 'Women's Seminar 2025: EmpowerHER – Engage, Energise, Elevate', here yesterday, Bernama reported. 'A 30% increase in female workforce participation could boost Malaysia's gross domestic product by up to 12%,' she said, citing a Khazanah Research Institute report. Nancy stressed that Malaysia must move beyond tokenism and invest in ecosystems that enable real progress through training. While women are making strides in business, technology, sports and governance, she notes that significant barriers remain. Nancy said women entrepreneurs still struggle with unequal access to funding and markets, while in tech, they are underrepresented in leadership. 'In government, the question remains: are they truly empowered or just symbolic? 'Despite comprising nearly 60% of the public sector, they remain under-represented in top leadership roles,' she added. Nancy called for stronger mentorship and leadership pipelines as well as the dismantling of systemic barriers. She pointed out that Malaysia has reached gender parity in education, with women making up 56.3% of public university enrolment in 2024, yet this achievement has not translated into equal economic participation. 'In 2023, only 56.2% of women were in the workforce compared with 82.3% of men. 'Many remain outside the labour force due to family responsibilities,' Nancy said. To address this, she says the Madani Economy Framework aims to raise female labour force participation to 60% within a decade, which will require policy reforms, stronger support systems and inclusive work environments. Nancy said the ministry is driving this challenge through the National Women's Policy and the 2025-2030 Action Plan, anchored on gender-disaggregated data, gender-responsive budgeting, impact assessments and audits.
