Ultra-rare 1998 RUF CTR 2 Sport headed to Monterey auction
A sought-after 1998 RUF CTR 2 Sport is set to go under the hammer at the 2025 Monterey Jet Centre Auction on August 13—14. Offered by Broad Arrow Auctions, it's expected to fetch between $3m (R53m) and $3.5m (R61.8m).
Unveiled in 1995, the CTR 2 was the second generation of RUF's ultra-high performance line and the first road legal RUF model sold in the US. Built on the Porsche 993-generation 911 chassis, it featured a race-bred 3.6 l twin-turbocharged air cooled flat-six engine inspired by the Group C Porsche 962. The powerplant delivered a mighty 432kW and 684Nm of torque.
Performance was fierce, with a 0—100km/h time of 3.6 seconds and an estimated top speed of 350km/h. Gear changes were handled by a specially reinforced six-speed manual transmission developed in-house by RUF to cope with the engine's output.
Other standout features included the first use of carbon disc brakes on a production road car, an integrated roll cage and a bi-functional rear wing. The Sport variant pushed the envelope further with a track-focused evolution that offered reduced weight, increased power and enhanced grip thanks to a widened track. Of the 29 CTR 2s produced, only 14 were Sport versions — making it an exceptionally rare machine.
The 1998 CTR 2 Sport on offer at Monterey (chassis no W09BC0360WPR06007) was commissioned by Frank Beddor, patriarch of the Beddor family. It stands out among its rarefied peers as one of only four CTR 2 Sports specified with all-wheel drive.
Delivered in non-metallic black over a black leather interior, the car remained in the Beddor family until 2007, when it was sold to Richard Gundeck of New Jersey. After suffering minor damage during transport, it was sent back to the RUF factory in Pfaffenhausen, Germany, where it received several upgrades and cosmetic repairs. These included a full green leather interior that now wraps nearly every surface inside the car, as well as Bilstein PSS10 coilovers.
Offered with just 26,842km on the clock at the time of cataloguing and a fresh service from RUF North America in July 2025, this sought-after supercar exemplifies the dual nature of the CTR 2 Sport: brutal performance balanced by everyday usability.

Broad Arrow Auctions has confirmed the final entries for its flagship Monterey Jet Center Auction taking place on August 13 and 14. Headlining the event is a 2005 Maserati MC12 Stradale (chassis number 12095), one of only 50 road-going examples built to homologate Maserati's FIA GT1 racing car. With just over 11,500km on its odometer, the car carries a pre-auction estimate of R85.6m to R98.1m. The MC12 programme played a key role in re-establishing Maserati's presence in international motorsport while also giving rise to one of the most collectible supercars of the modern era. The example represents a rare opportunity to acquire a homologation special that bridges Maserati's rich competition heritage with modern GT1-era performance. Watch: Oops! Super rare Porsche 911-based RUF falls off car carrier
In what can only be described as a major 'oops', an extremely rare Porsche 911-based RUF fell off a car carrier when delivered back to its owner in San Francisco, California, following its return from RUF's headquarters in Germany, where it was freshly painted in black. So, how exactly did this accident happen? Well, this RUF Yellowbird's rear wheels weren't correctly fixed to the transporter. So, upon delivery, it rolled off the 2.4m-tall ramp and hit the ground. According to footage circulating online (watch the footage shared by Spike Feresten on Instagram below), only the rear bumper and exhaust touched the ground. However, the car was wedged between the ramp and the ground. John Clay Wolf wrote on Instagram: 'Sitting with a friend when he gets the call that his customer's RUF Yellowbird fell off the trailer. The guy had just sent the car back to Germany to have it painted black. It makes it all the way home to SF [San Francisco], then the driver forgets to block the tires – and this happens.' Based on the 993-generation Porsche 911, the CTR Yellowbird is one of the rarest models ever built by RUF – the car you see here being one of only 29 sold. As such, it's an extremely sought-after collector's car. In 2025, one example sold for $6m – a whopping R107m at the current exchange rate – under the gavel. The RUF CTR Yellowbird was the world's fastest production car when it was introduced in the late 1980s, with its 3.4-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine's 345kW peak power output allowing it to reach a top speed of 343km/h. Porsche takes Formula E team and manufacturer titles
Porsche won the team and manufacturer titles as the all-electric Formula E championship wrapped up its season in London on Sunday. Nissan's Oliver Rowland had already won the drivers' crown with two races to spare. The Briton retired from Sunday's race after a crash. New Zealand's Nick Cassidy won both races at the ExCel centre on Saturday and Sunday as he said farewell to Jaguar with second place overall in the championship. Sunday's victory was a fifth in six races for Jaguar. Cassidy beat Mahindra's Nyck de Vries by 13.5 seconds with Sebastien Buemi third for Envision after Jaguar's Mitch Evans finished second on the road but was then handed a five second penalty and dropped to fifth. The race was the last for Jaguar team principal James Barclay, who is moving to head McLaren's world endurance hypercar team, and also for the McLaren Formula E team.
