Morocco Establishes Defense Industry Zones Through New Joint Venture
Doha – The Moroccan government has officially authorized the creation of a company dedicated to developing and managing specialized industrial zones for defense industries.
According to decree N° 2.25.428 published in the Official Bulletin on June 9, the new entity – dubbed the 'Defense Industrial Zones Management Company' – will be established as a joint venture between the Military Housing and Equipment Agency (ALEM) and MEDZ, a subsidiary of the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion (CDG) group.
The new company will be capitalized at MAD 300,000 ($30,000), with ownership split equally between ALEM and MEDZ. Its primary mission will be to design, develop, market, and manage industrial zones specifically dedicated to defense industry activities.
This initiative implements royal directives aimed at creating two specialized industrial zones for defense manufacturing, in accordance with Law 10.20 governing defense and security equipment, weapons, and ammunition.
The project follows a strategic partnership agreement signed on November 8, 2023, between the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the National Defense Administration, CDG, and ALEM.
The authorization, decided on May 22, was signed by the head of government and countersigned by Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fettah Alaoui. It grants a one-year period for the company's establishment from the date of publication in the Official Bulletin.
The industrial zones will host manufacturing activities and services related to the production of weapons, ammunition, and defense and security equipment.
This development represents a major step in Morocco's strategy to build sovereign capabilities in military technology and attract international investors to strengthen the country's defense production capacity.
ALEM, which has been operating since 1994 when it replaced the Military Housing and Equipment Fund, specializes in constructing housing for military personnel and developing infrastructure.
Meanwhile, MEDZ positions itself as Morocco's leading institutional investor dedicated to the development and management of industrial parks.
This is not the CDG subsidiary's first involvement in defense industry projects. MEDZ previously participated in a planned ultra-modern maintenance center for military aircraft and helicopters in Benslimane, in partnership with Belgian company Blueberry and American manufacturer Lockheed Martin, though this project has yet to materialize.
The creation of these specialized zones comes as Morocco has already begun attracting defense industry investments, including a recently announced project from Indian conglomerate Tata.
The project was also approved following the agreement of the National Agency for Strategic Management of State Participations, headed by Abdellatif Zaghnoun, along with the boards of directors of both MEDZ and ALEM. Tags: DefenseMoroccan MilitaryMoroccan Royal Armed Forces

Boeing Partners with Casablanca Aéronautique to Produce Parts for 737 MAX
Rabat – Boeing has moved to expand its industrial presence in Morocco by signing a new agreement with Casablanca Aéronautique, a subsidiary of France's Figeac Aéro Group. Under the deal, the Moroccan firm will produce machined parts for Boeing's 737 MAX aircraft, adding a new chapter to the aerospace giant's long-standing engagement with the country. 'This partnership speaks to our intent to help shape a solid aerospace ecosystem in Morocco,' said Emily Belgrade, Vice President of Global Supply Chain at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. She also pointed to the company's broader ambition to build lasting, reciprocal ties with local industry. Casablanca Aéronautique employs about 900 people and operates across multiple areas of expertise, from machining and assembly to sheet metal work and surface treatment. Its director general, Maurice Herbelin, welcomed the agreement, calling it a natural step in a growing relationship. He also underlined the company's role in supporting Morocco's industrial ambitions. Jean-Claude Maillard, CEO of Figeac Aéro, saw the deal as a clear expression of the group's strategy to maintain a global industrial footprint while anchoring a strong presence in local markets. He said the Moroccan sites show real promise for growth and value creation. Boeing's involvement in Morocco goes back years. In 2016, the company signed a framework agreement with the Ministry of Industry and the Moroccan Investment and Export Development Agency (AMDIE) to develop local capacity and encourage suppliers to set up operations. That effort has since helped create jobs and draw more players into Morocco's aerospace ecosystem. Moreover, RAM recently moved closer to renewing its fleet through a major deal with Boeing, while also considering a smaller order from Airbus. According to industry insiders quoted by Reuters, the Moroccan carrier is on the verge of securing an agreement to acquire dozens of Boeing jets. At the same time, Airbus aims to supply RAM with around 20 A220 aircraft. Tags: BoeingCasablanca AeronautiqueMoroccoMorocco aeronautics industry

Morocco Becomes Spain's Top Pepper Supplier
Rabat – Morocco hit a record in 2024 as Spain's leading supplier of peppers, exporting 101.11 million kilos — accounting for over 92% of Spain's total pepper imports. This marks a 199.9% surge compared to 2015, when Moroccan exports stood at 33.71 million kilos. According to data compiled by Hortoinfo from Spain's ICEX and Tax Agency, the value of Morocco's pepper exports to Spain reached €121.46 million ($131.18 million) last year, with an average price of €1.20 ($1.30) per kilo. Over the past decade, Spain's overall pepper imports nearly tripled , rising from 37.64 million kilos in 2015 to 109.47 million in 2024. Meanwhile, Portugal and France followed as distant suppliers, with 2.84 and 2.08 million kilos respectively. The data highlights Morocco's growing role in the European agricultural market, even as Spanish pepper exports also grew modestly by 20.87% over the same period. Spain itself remains a global powerhouse in pepper exports, shipping 844.62 million kilos in 2024 — mainly to Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. The broader trade data reflects shifting dynamics in the European produce market, with imports from other countries have also grown significantly: Portugal increased its pepper exports to Spain by nearly 500% over the decade, and France by 32%.
