Goodwood tips: Newsboy's picks and 1-2-3 for every race on Tuesday on ITV

Daily Mirror5 days ago
The feature Goodwood Cup, the Vintage Stakes and Lennox Stakes are all covered in Newsboy's unmissable tipping column on day one of Glorious Goodwood
Five days of racing in one of the most picturesque racing settings in the world begins at Goodwood on Tuesday. The Qatar Goodwood Festival, also known as Glorious Goodwood, is one of the highlights of the summer when the crowds come out to the Sussex venue in the hope of fine racing and fine weather.

Day one features the Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup in which Aidan O'Brien is set to saddle the favourite Illinois, who finished runner-up in the Ascot Gold Cup. Newsboy, aka David Yates, will be providing daily and detailed guides on every race.

1.20 Coral Chesterfield Cup
ANCIENT ROME features on an attractive mark as he bids to repeat his victory in this race of two years ago.
The son of War Front was having his first outing for Charlie Hills - he had won four times for André Fabre before leaving Chantilly for Lambourn - when contesting the 2023 Qatar Goodwood Festival's opening race.
Competing from a British Horseracing Authority mark of 105, Ancient Rome came with a power-packed finish under Jamie Spencer to beat Haunted Dream by one length, going on to lift a Grade 3 event at Kentucky Downs next time.
My selection hasn't found the target in 12 attempts since, but showed he still has fire in his belly with a third, beaten a neck and half a length, behind Flying Frontier in the 10-furlong handicap that rounded off Sandown Park's Coral-Eclipse Stakes card on his penultimate start.
Jamie Spencer's partner didn't reproduce that form in the John Smith's Cup at York 17 days ago but, now rated 100, he's weighted to go close if the return to the South Downs reignites the spark.

Westridge, Castle Cove, and Tony Montana are the choices to scrap it out for the minor medals in a tricky curtain-raiser.
NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 ANCIENT ROME, 2 WESTRIDGE, 3 CASTLE COVE

1.55 Coral Vintage Stakes
ZAVATERI has to shoulder a 3lb penalty for his July Stakes at Newmarket 19 days ago to remain unbeaten - but can prove up to the task.
Eve Johnson Houghton is enjoying another strong campaign with her two-year-olds in 2025 - Havana Hurricane took Royal Ascot 's Windsor Castle Stakes back to Oxfordshire - and Zavateri is the highest achiever of the Blewbury neophytes thus far.

The chestnut son of Without Parole started off in a six-furlong novice stakes at Salisbury on June 10 and overcame evident inexperience to make a winning debut.
His sights were then raised to Group 2 level for the July Stakes, for which Charlie Bishop's mount went off the 18-1 of the six to take part.
But Zavateri laughed at his outsider status, hitting the front over a furlong from the finish and surging home to beat Do Or Do Not by one length.

The extra weight makes things tougher but the opportunity to tackle seven furlongs for the first time looks a definite plus and Zavateri looks a long way from the bottom of the barrel.
The form of Aidan O'Brien's youngsters makes Dorset a major threat, with Humidity and Goodwood Galaxy also on the list.

2.30 HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes
JONQUIL is poised to take advantage of a one-rung step down the class ladder. Sent into training with Sir Michael Stoute as a juvenile, the Juddmonte-owned son of Lope De Vega made a taking debut at Sandown Park last August, defying interference to overhaul next-time-out scorer Centigrade and win by a short head.
Jonquil blew out in the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster a fortnight later, beating just one of his six rivals home as the 7-4 favourite.

Following Stoute's announcement that his career was to come to an end, Jonquil joined Andrew Balding, marking his first start for Kingsclere with a fluent length-and-a-half margin from Rashabar in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes at Newbury in April.
My selection then came within a head of Classic glory, being run down by head victor Henri Matisse for the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp in April.
The step back to six furlongs for Royal Ascot's Group 1 Commonwealth Cup didn't work out - Jonquil returned 13th of 21 behind Time For Sandals - but Oisín Murphy's mount will be happier back at seven and can get back in business.

With two wins, a second and a third in this race, Kinross has to be feared, along with Noble Champion and Quinault.
NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 JONQUIL, 2 KINROSS, 3 QUINAULT

3.05 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup
SCANDINAVIA (NAP) receives a stone from his seven opponents, including favourite and stablemate Illinois, and the weight concession tilts the scales in the three-year-old's favour.
The son of Justify and an unraced half-sister to 'Iron Horse' Giant's Causeway missed the target with three darts for Aidan O'Brien as a juvenile in 2024. However, Scandinavia has proved a different proposition in his Classic campaign - so much so that he is as short as 3-1 in the High Street for the St Leger.

Punters made Wayne Lordan's mount the 1-2 hotpot for a 10-furlong maiden at Navan in May and Scandinavia duly made no mistake to earn a step up to Group 2 level for the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot.
Allowed to go off at 16-1, Scandinavia ran well above those odds, rallying into fifth at the end of the mile and six furlongs to take fifth behind Carmers.
A well-backed 11-8 market leader for the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket 19 days ago, my selection, equipped with cheekpieces that are persevered with today, then thrashed Nightime Dancer by eight and a half lengths.

The step up to two miles is just what the doctor ordered and Scandinavia has the untapped potential to open his account at the top level.
Illinois, who led home Dubai Future (third) and Sweet William (fourth) when runner-up in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, is respected greatly, while French Master and Sunway also merit a second look in a fascinating first Group 1 of the fixture.
NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 SCANDINAVIA, 2 ILLINOIS, 3 FRENCH MASTER

3.45 Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap
SHAGRAAN (NB) has a consistent record that includes victory at this fixture 12 months ago, and another good account is on the cards.

Last year, the son of Sioux Nation and Tom Marquand lifted the three-year-old handicap over five furlongs, getting the better of Got To Love A Grey by half a length.
Again successful over the minimum trip at Haydock Park in September, the Mick Appleby trainee made a pleasing return with a third, two necks behind winner Rosario, over this course and distance in May.
My selection's fourth, again off today's British Horseracing Authority rating of 101, behind American Affair at York 13 says later has been well advertised since and precipitated a Listed challenge back at Haydock two outings ago.

Shagraan ran a fine third to Balmoral Lady in the Achilles Stakes that afternoon and performed to a similar level with a three-length third to Rumstar in the Group 3 Coral Charge on the Eclipse Stakes undercard at Sandown Park last time out.
His mark looks within range as top weight Shagraan returns to the handicap sphere and that Goodwood know-how will also come in handy.
The short list is a long one, with Adrestia, Canon's House, Regal Envoy and Dream Composer just four horses capable of showing to the fore.

NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 SHAGRAAN, 2 ADRESTIA, 3 DREAM COMPOSER
4.20 British Stallions Studs EBF Maiden Stakes

HIGH APPROVAL has done enough in his first two races to suggest a maiden victory is close at hand.
The son of Mehmas and an unraced mare who has thrown five winners must have impressed in his breeze before going under the hammer at the Arqana sale in May - he fetched €400,000.
Sent into training Newmarket-based Hamad Al Jehani by purchaser Wathnan Racing, High Approval started the even-money favourite for a six-furlong novice stakes at Nottingham at the start of June but a lack of previous experience did for his chances as he finished third behind Reciprocated.

My selection again led the market at 8-11 for a Yarmouth maiden over the same distance 26 days ago but found Peel Park a length and a quarter too strong.
The winner had the advantage of racing under the stands' rail on that occasion and, with more to offer on the third outing of his career, the Christophe Soumillon-partnered High Approval is taken to enjoy a red-letter day.
Wathnan first string Naval Light, also seeking to make it third time lucky, is a danger, in company with Stellar Sunrise and Warning Symbol.

NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 HIGH APPROVAL, 2 NAVAL LIGHT, 3 WARNING SYMBOL
4.55 Ridgeview Fillies' Handicap

PROTEST looks feasibly weighted for her first foray into the handicap domain. Punters made the well-related daughter of Ulysses the 15-8 favourite for her racecourse debut at Chelmsford City last October and the Roger Varian trainee justified their faith with a length-and-a-quarter winning margin.
Protest then moved up in class to Listed class, coming out of Newmarket's Listed Montrose Stakes over the Rowley Mile the following month with plenty of credit - she was beaten under two lengths in fourth behind Smoken.
Although she finished a comeback sixth of nine in the Listed Conqueror Stakes over this course and distance at the beginning of May, my selection wasn't beaten far at the line before moving up to 10 furlongs for Newbury's same-level Fillies' Trial Stakes.

The new trip appeared to stretch the stamina of Silvestre de Sousa's mount - Protest travelled strongly before fading into fourth behind subsequent Group 2 winner Qilin Queen - so coming back to a mile is the right move for a filly who is far from exposed. Mahra's Love, Dash Of Azure and Zapphire all have podium claims.
5.30 World Pool Bet With The Tote EBF Fillies' Handicap

SEA EMILY RUN comes with risks attached - she refused to enter the stalls at Newmarket at the end of last month - but there's no doubt the ability is there.
The Tom Clover-saddled daughter of Too Darn Hot made it third time lucky at two with a course-and-distance score in a fillies' novice stakes last August before a Listed fourth at Newmarket in November.
Sent into handicaps this term, See Emily Run ran fifth to Raneenn at Doncaster at the end of April but then took a step forward at Chester with a head margin from Lady Of Andros five weeks later.
That effort should be marked up given that Jack Mitchell's mount lost momentum with a stumble two furlongs out and it's hoped my selection's recalcitrance at the start at Newmarket was just a temporary loss of good humour. Easy Peeler, Dubai Treasure, Cinque Verde and Harvanna are all names to throw into the melting pot as Tuesday's entertainment draws to a close.

How Cowes found the secret of a successful seaside resort

These days, most English seaside towns are sites of national mourning. You pay your respects by walking up some deathtrap pier, dropping two pence in an arcade coin pusher and whispering, your flower now on the grave: 'Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.' But Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, has managed to stave off this sorry end. Its secret is Cowes Week. Cowes Week, which starts today, is an annual sailing regatta. It has earned its place as a respected event in Britain's sporting calendar – always in August, between Glorious Goodwood and the Glorious Twelfth – but its beginnings were unambitious. On 10 August 1826, following an advertisement in the Southampton Town and Country Herald a fortnight before, ships raced from Cowes to Southsea Castle near Portsmouth and back, eight nautical miles each way, for a prize of £100. Cowes's genius – and what has secured its survival – has been turning this local lark into a money-spinner: 'Cowes Week, The Oldest Sailing Regatta In The World.' While Poole and Bournemouth are still flogging sticks of rock to the same diminishing group of day-trippers, Cowes has rebranded as a 'sailing town'. To get technical, it has mastered what The Spectator's Wiki Man Rory Sutherland calls 'reverse benchmarking'. Rather than trying to compete with other seaside towns on the usual terms – best fish and chips, nicest beach – Cowes has gone its own way. It has a Henri Lloyd, some lovely bakeries, a big M&S and a nice restaurant that sells expensive seafood platters. The beach is not great, but no one cares. Before Cowes Week, Cowes was a dull administrative centre for the British Empire. Rice from the American colonies was brought to the town, which is at the northernmost point of the Isle of Wight, to clear customs before being distributed across Europe. Tourists only really started coming to Cowes when Queen Victoria built a palace in Italian renaissance style on a cliff on its eastern outskirts. Prince Albert said that the vista, overlooking the grey and murky Solent, reminded him of the Bay of Naples. Perhaps Albert was getting ahead of himself, but the Isle of Wight does have a foreign allure. This makes the rebrand to 'international sailing town' believable. Friedrich Engels, who visited the island often, said it was a 'little paradise', and oddly also compared it with Naples. Engels was apparently drawn to the Isle of Wight after reading a book by James Clark, a physician, who wrote in 1829 that the Isle of Wight's air had miraculous medicinal properties. '[The island] possesses several peculiarities of climate and situation,' said Clark, 'which render it a very favourable and commodious residence throughout the year for a large class of invalids.' There are still some wrong 'uns around the Isle of Wight, and around Cowes. Last year, a criminal who was on the run registered himself as living at my parents' address for the purpose of acquiring a driving licence, and I have also become friendly with a former convict who likes to pick magic mushrooms from a field near the town. HMP Isle of Wight, a high security 'super prison', is a ten-minute drive from Cowes. It was once home to the Kray twins and the Yorkshire Ripper. David Icke also lives on the Isle of Wight. Criminals, conspiracists and cosmopolitan sailors share Cowes happily.

Back a horse by clicking their odds below. Advertisement SAM HAWKENS (1.55 Goodwood, nap) He is a stayer on the up as he showed when scooting in over 1m5f at Hamilton last time. There was a bit of juice in the ground at the Scottish track and he wasn't stopping at the line. This is a hotter race but there's more to come. SAYIDAH HARD SPUN (2.10 Newmarket, nb) She has won two of her past three runs and saw out this trip well when scoring at Ascot last time. The handicapper has been fair with a 3lb rise in the weights and she can take another step forward. Advertisement TERM OF ENDEARMENT (2.30 Goodwood, treble) She won this race 12 months ago and returning to this trip and track can bring out her best form. She was beaten when odds-on at Sandown last time but that was a muddling race and he was only two lengths away at the line. We know she stays and a little give in the ground is fine while William Haggas is in fine form. Templegate's TV verdicts GOODWOOD Advertisement 1.20 ARABIAN CROWN was a solid third in a Newmarket Group 2 last time and the form has been franked here this week. He goes on any ground and sees out this trip. There's more to come from this four-year-old. Advertisement Al Aasy won this last year and, while he's not the greatest battler, his class will see him close again. Candleford is seven now but looked as good as ever when taking a Beverley Listed prize last month. He likes this trip and William Haggas is in decent form. Meydaan was second on his last visit here in May and has been running well at Listed level without winning. Advertisement Ryan Moore taking over is a plus but he needs a bit more to score. Ambiente Friendly hasn't fired this season and has been gelded since a poor effort at Royal Ascot. 1.55 SAM HAWKENS is a stayer on the up as he showed when scooting in over 1m5f at Hamilton last time. Advertisement There was a bit of juice in the ground at the Scottish track and he wasn't stopping at the line. This is a hotter race but there's more to come. Aeronautic was a good fifth in the Copper Horse handicap at Royal Ascot over this distance and is open to improvement for Joseph O'Brien. He's off the same mark and may prefer this slightly slower ground. Advertisement Stressfree would have a massive chance if seeing out this longer trip. He has been going well around 1m4f and looks a big price to place. French Duke is another stepping up in distance and he won at this meeting last season. Roger Varian's hope is 10lb higher than that now but should have more to offer. Advertisement Master Builder often travels well without winning but he has scored over this trip and didn't run badly on his last run here. 2.30 TERM OF ENDEARMENT won this race 12 months ago and returning to this trip and track can bring out her best form. She was beaten when odds-on at Sandown last time but that was a muddling race and he was only two lengths away at the line. Advertisement We know she stays and a little give in the ground is fine while William Haggas is in fine form. Danielle is interesting on this hike in distance having shown Group quality over shorter. This may not be the day after a long break she's one to watch. Fellow Gosden runner Sueno was a solid second at Newmarket latest and ran well over this distance at York before that. Advertisement She is another with solid claims. Goodie Two Shoes won a Group 3 over this distance at Fairyhouse latest and is respected with William Buick up. Waardah is a three-year-old with a bright future after a Listed win here in June. That was over 1m2f so she has to prove her staying power. Advertisement 3.05 I'M in the PUROSANGUE gang in the £250,000 Stewards' Cup. Top jockey William Buick teams up with Andrew Balding with this four-year-old who saves his best for this distance and likes soft ground. He should get his conditions here and run a big race at fair odds. Advertisement Last year's winner Get It took the Wokingham last time and will go close again, while Completely Random also went well at Royal Ascot. Elmonjed is another one high on the shortlist. Here's my guide to the big field, where I rate them 1 (worst) to 5 (best): ALZAHIR 3 Advertisement HIR we go. Went off far too quick at York last time after three good wins. Goes on any ground and may bounce back at too big a price. ANNAF 3 AF a go. Big player at best but unreliable and slow away too often. Talented if getting a clean break but has a big weight. APOLLO ONE 3 Advertisement ONE show. Twice second in this and always runs his race but probably needs a personal best to finally win it. CIRCE 4 YES Cir. Strong traveller with three wins this summer. Up in class but big field suits and Moore up. Handles soft. COMMANCHE FALLS 2 Advertisement COM on. Dual winner of this race in his proime. Stable back in nick but latest form underwhelming. Hard to rule out, but needs best to hit the frame. COMPLETELY RANDOM 4 RAN raid. Good run in the Wokingham latest and will love the pace of this. Just the type to pop up in a race like this. DESERT COP 1 Advertisement COP out. Decent form in Bahrain but has been poor back here. Looks the yard's second string. DRAMA 2 NO Drama. Plenty of form on AW but turf record is weaker. Unlucky last time but needs more for this. ELMONJED 4 Advertisement EL of a bet. Improved a bundle to win at York and likes this trip and going. More weight but a major player. GERMANIC 2 TOO Manic. Two quiet on turf efforts since a big run over this at Newcastle. Trip fine but needs a lot more. GET IT 4 Advertisement IT makes sense. Won this at 40s last year and took the Wokingham last time in style. Only 4lb higher and set for bold bid from from front. No shock to see him go very close. HAMMER THE HAMMER 3 HAMMER time. Good second at Royal Ascot over 5f and likes this trip. Not tackled slow ground before but it's early days and there's more to come. JAKAJARO 3 Advertisement ALRIGHT Jak. Unlucky at Ascot and ran well here Tuesday. First try at 6f but looks well treated. Off the same mark and not discounted. JORDAN ELECTRICS 1 JOR drop. Getting on a bit now and poor comeback latest. Hard to fancy despite trainer Jim Goldie being in good form. JUNGLE DRUMS 1 Advertisement JUNGLE juiced. Fair 2yo but been poor for a while and this looks much too tough. Drums out of tune. KORKER 3 KOR blimey. Hold-up horse who needs luck but trip fine and likes soft. Each-way shout if getting the breaks. ORAZIO 1 Advertisement ON Raz. Hit and miss last year and poor comeback at Ascot. Hard to fancy despite handling any ground. PUROSANGUE 5 URO Star. Backed for this last year on firm but best efforts on soft and dropped to a very nice mark. Can go close. RUN BOY RUN 3 Advertisement ON Run. Has been reliable in top 6f races and didn't stay 7f last twice. Back to best trip and could sneak a place. SAINT LAWRENCE 1 LAW broken. Not won since the 2023 Wokingham and poor in that race this year. Tall order in current form. SEVEN QUESTIONS 1 Advertisement SEVEN down. Group 3 winner last term over 5f and best at that trip. Shown little form this season. STRIKE RED 3 RED alert. Best of group behind Elmonjed at York. Nicely treated and peaking at right time. Can run a good race. THE X O 1 Advertisement CROSS out X. Out of sorts for a while and tailed off on stable debut. Trip suits but not good enough for this. TOCA MADERA 2 MAD bet. Good third at York in May and holding his form but doesn't look well treated in first-time cheekpieces. TWILIGHT CALLS 1 Advertisement TWILIGHT in dark. Three years without a win tells the tale. Best over this trip but likely to struggle again. TWILIGHT JET 2 JET must fly. Ran well at Epsom but was poor here on Tuesday. Prefers this trip on soft but needs a lot more. TWO TRIBES 3 Advertisement TWO true. Won strong 7f race last week at Ascot and stamina may help in conditions. Could get involved late. VADREAM 2 BAD Vad. Was tailed off at Royal Ascot and on a long losing run. Slow ground suits but up against it again. 3.45 Advertisement SPIRIT OF FARHH looks a big price given how well he took a Newmarket handicap over this trip 14 days ago. The ground was tacky on the July course but he went through it nicely and is open to improvement. In-form trainer Eve Johnson Houghton has a good record here and can go close again. Montpellier won a couple of maidens and ran well at Salisbury on handicap debut last time. Advertisement There's more to come with this step up in distance a wise move. Consolidation was snookered by the draw at Royal Ascot but won over this course and distance two starts ago. It's early days and there should be a lot more to come. Mudbir is bred to be classy and scored on handicap debut at Sandown 28 days ago. Advertisement He should progress from there from the Gosdens and looks a big player. Rare Change was hampered at Newcastle last time after winning at Pontefract. He likes this trip and has place claims. Yah Mo Be There ran well in the Jersey Stakes from a moderate draw and is another danger. Advertisement NEWMARKET 2.10 SAYIDAH HARD SPUN has won two of her past three runs and saw out this trip well when scoring at Ascot last time. The handicapper has been fair with a 3lb rise in the weights and she can take another step forward. Advertisement Awaafi was a promising second at Haydock last time. She shapes as though seven furlongs would be ideal but her stamina could be an asset here. Azleet enjoyed the all-weather when scoring over this distance at Southwell 20 three weeks ago. Her opening handicap mark of 76 looks on the lenient side and there should be more to come. Advertisement Ruby's Angel is another making her handicap debut and was a place behind Awaafi last time. Despite that she carries 1lb more which seems a little strange but she's not out of this. Meelaf completes the field for in-form Karl Burke and has run well at Group 3 level so is no mug in this wide-open contest. Her mark is not the kindest and she might have less scope than a few of these now but she's quick. Advertisement 3.20 MERIBELLA had some traffic problems in a Pontefract Listed race last time so did well to finish third. This trip is ideal and she will be on the premises again. Jane Temple clocked a personal best when third in a similar contest to this last time. Advertisement She goes on any ground and will be right there. Silent Love steps out of maiden company where she landed a battling success at Kempton latest. This longer trip will suit and there's a fair bit more to come. Sioux Life is an Italian Group 2 winner over 1m2f so has quality but her first crack at this trip at Haydock last time was only a modest run. Advertisement Karmology was second in good company at Beverley and will try to nick this off the front. She's likely to be collared by a couple in the closing stages. Goodwood tips: Newsboy's picks plus 1-2-3 for every race on Saturday on ITV

With plenty of winners over the five days our ace tipster tackles the Stewards Cup and every other race on the final day of Glorious Goodwood Five days of racing in one of the most picturesque racing settings in the world comes to an end at Goodwood on Saturday. The Qatar Goodwood Festival, also known as Glorious Goodwood, is one of the highlights of the summer when the crowds come out to the Sussex venue in the hope of fine racing and fine weather. ‌ Day five features the Coral Stewards' Cup, contested by a maximum field of 28, the Group 2 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes and the Group 3 Coral Glorious Stakes. ‌ Newsboy, aka David Yates, will be providing daily and detailed guides on every race. ‌ 1.20 Coral Glorious Stakes AL AASY won this race in style 12 months ago and the title holder will be hard to beat. For a horse who has been called his fair share of names, William Haggas's stable stalwart has an enviable record of 10 wins from 25 starts - that's a 40 per cent win ratio. ‌ His eighth victory came here in 2024 when the gelded eight-year-old and Jim Crowley threaded through a gap against the far rail to account for Relentless Voyager by one length. Al Aasy then made light of a Group 3 penalty in Newbury's Geoffrey Freer Stakes two weeks later and made it into double figures when returning to the fray in the same-level Gordon Richard Stakes at Sandown Park in April. Again held up at the back of the seven-runner field, the son of Sea The Stars swept through to beat Ancient Wisdom by half a length, with Arabian Crown behind in sixth. ‌ A funeral cortège gallop proved Al Aasy's undoing when fourth in the Group 3 Aston Park Stakes at Newbury, and he didn't get the breaks upped in class for Royal Ascot 's Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes last time. But he should get a pace to aim at here and, back down in grade, must go well. The rain-softened terrain is a plus for Arabian Crown, while Al Aasy's stablemate Candleford is the choice for third. NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 AL AASY, 2 ARABIAN CROWN, 3 CANDLEFORD ‌ 1.55 Coral Summer Handicap SUBSEQUENT went from strength to strength in 2024 and will have no issue with the prevailing conditions. The Andrew Balding-saddled son of Galileo won't win anything if he repeats the form of his comeback last-of-six behind Al Qareem in the Group 3 Silver Cup at York last month. But the chestnut four-year-old is better judged on his ascent through the ranks last season. ‌ Unraced at two, Subsequent marked his third start by landing a novice stakes at Haydock Park in June of last year before entering the handicap domain to score at Salisbury and Newmarket during the summer. On the back of a short-head defeat in Doncaster's valuable Mallard Handicap in September, my preference went one better, by two and a half lengths from Allonsy, in the Listed Noel Murless Stakes - the one-mile, six-furlong race was staged on soft ground - at Ascot three weeks later. A sizeable step forward from his reappearance is essential but, if it is forthcoming back in handicaps, David Probert's partner is well capable of registering a fifth career win. The hat-trick-seeking Sam Hawkens is on the up and entitled to respect, along with French Duke and Aeronautic. ‌ NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 SUBSEQUENT, 2 SAM HAWKENS, 3 FRENCH DUKE 2.30 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes ‌ GOODIE TWO SHOES has done very little wrong and, despite tackling Group 2 opposition for the first time, gets the vote rack up the four-timer. She has a win in a mares' maiden hurdle at Killarney to show from seven attempts over obstacles, but Joseph O'Brien's daughter of Fastnet Rock has been a good deal more effective on the Flat, carrying the colours of JP McManus to six victories from 10 starts. Half of those successes have come this season, starting with a six-length supremacy in the Listed Vintage Tipple Stakes - Goodie Two Shoes had finished third at Cork on her Flat comeback the previous month - over a mile and three-quarters at Gowran Park in May. ‌ Staying at Listed level but moving up to two miles, the six-year-old went in again under Dylan Browne McMonagle - William Buick is in the plate this afternoon - with a length-and-a-half beating of La Isla Mujeres. And she completed the hat-trick back at a mile and six in the Group 3 Stanerra Stakes back over at Fairyhouse 24 days ago, travelling strongly en route to a half-length margin from Drawn To Dream. This test demands another personal best, but Goodie Two Shoes is thriving and it will be a surprise if this likeable mare doesn't have more to give. ‌ Term Of Endearment came home in front 12 months ago and should again go well, while stablemates Danielle and Sueno are taken to battle it out for the bronze medal. NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 GOODIE TWO SHOES, 2 TERM OF ENDEARMENT, 3 DANIELLE ‌ 3.05 Coral Stewards' Cup COMMANCHE FALLS is well treated for his bid for racing history as the first three-time winner of the Stewards' Cup. The eight-year-old is currently in a share of the lead with Marvel (1980 & 1892), Golden Rod (1910 &1912), Lord Annandale (1913 & 1914), Sugar Palm (1942 & 1943) and Sky Diver (1967 & 1968) - all are two-time winners of the six-furlong test. ‌ Michael Dods' stable favourite can be backed at bid odds to land the overall record - but shouldn't be underestimated. The downside is the gelding's losing run - 16 races since Commanche Falls lifted York's Listed Garrowby Stakes in September 2023. But there are positives - and you don't have to look too hard to find them. The barren spell has seen Commanche Falls fall in the weights - he was rated 112 on the day of his latest win but will compete from a British Horseracing Authority handicap mark of 98 today. There is also the small matter of his 'previous' in this race. ‌ In 2021, Connor Beasley's partner galloped through soft ground to deny Gulliver by a months later, on significantly quicker terrain, he followed up with a short-head call from Tabdeed. Those wins - Commanche Falls is unbeaten in two visits to Goodwood - came from ratings 3lb and 5lb above this afternoon's figure, and the recent return to form of the Dods yard fuels hopes of a revival. In a typically open renewal, Hammer The Hammer, Jakajaro, Strike Red, and Apollo One are at the top of a long shortlist. ‌ Don't miss a FREE £2 William Hill shop bet inside your Mirror every day of Glorious Goodwood Festival Pick up your Mirror every day of the Goodwood festival to get your hands on 12 page pullouts packed with insight from the punters you trust, plus FREE William Hill shop bets every day of the festival from Tuesday July 29 until Saturday August 2, 2025. There is much to like about the William Haggas trainee's pedigree - Headmaster is a son of Dubawi and the Somerville Lodge stable's three-time Prix de la Forêt heroine, One Master. Headmaster didn't make the track as a juvenile and he was gelded by the time he took on seven opponents for a novice stakes at Lingfield Park in May, finishing a three-quarter-length second to Elarak. The runner-up berth once more beckoned at Windsor at the end of June as Headmaster went down by a neck to Antipodes. ‌ But there was no mistake at the third time of asking as my choice justified odds of 2-5 in style at Haydock Park 15 days ago, humbling Palio Di Siena by four and a quarter lengths. Headmaster looks capable of a good deal better and, from an opening mark of 88, he should give Japanese rising star Mirai Iwata a good spin. Dangers lurk at every turn, with top weight The Waco Kid, favourite Mudbir and the soft-ground-capable Spirit Of Farhh all with something to recommend them. ‌ NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 HEADMASTER, 2 SPIRIT OF FARHH, 3 THE WACO KID 4.20 British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes ‌ CORINTH is put up as the value alternative to warm order Isaac Newton. The son of Dubai - dam Ricetta is a niece of Kingman who won twice for John and Thady Gosden - went off at 12-1 in a field of five when starting out for Clarehaven in a novice stakes at Sandown Park at the beginning of last month. Prominent from the outset, Corinth looked in need of his first experience when asked to go forward entering the final two of the contest's seven furlongs. But he kept on to take fourth, two and a quarter lengths behind winner Pacifica Pier - Corinth's stablemate Publish took second but is now the 2,000 Guineas favourite after going one better at the Esher track - and will know more this time. ‌ Isaac Newton just missed out on his Curragh debut and is greatly feared, ahead of Exclusive Code. NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 CORINTH, 2 ISAAC NEWTON, 3 EXCLUSIVE CODE ‌ 4.55 Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap ALPHA CRUCIS gets the vote to improve on an already impressive Goodwood track three visits, the son of Australia, trained in tandem by Gary and Josh Moore, has emerged victorious on three occasions. Successful over a mile here in October 2023, the five-year-old was back in business over this afternoon's course and distance last September before following up back at a mile on the South Downs 18 days later. Not disgraced on his return when eighth in the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster in March, Alpha Crucis was a good second at Epsom on Oaks day and appeals from an unchanged mark. Gladius brings an attractive profile to the meeting's finale, while Indalo and Toimy Son are also worth a second look. NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 ALPHA CRUCIS, 2 GLADIUS, 3 TOIMY SON
