Ryan Reynolds has pitched an ‘R-rated' Star Wars. What would that look like?
Take all the essential ingredients of Star Wars – samurais in space, adventure among the wookiees, aliens with backward syntax, evil cyborgs with a penchant for murder by telekinesis – then imagine George Lucas hadn't given us all of that through a PG prism. This, it appears, is what Ryan Reynolds did when pitching to Disney. 'I said, 'Why don't we do an R-rated Star Wars property?'' Reynolds told The Box Office podcast. ''It doesn't have to be overt, A+ characters. There's a wide range of characters you could use.' And I don't mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios don't want to just gamble on something like that.'
Let's imagine the scene: a gaggle of studio execs are nervously cowering before the Hollywood A-lister's megawatt smirk as he reveals his idea for a take on George Lucas's space opera that doesn't hold back. This is Star Wars Tarantino-style. Perhaps Mando's got a drug problem, or Chewie really does rip people's arms off – and beat them to death with the wet ends. Somewhere over in Coruscant a Jedi slices a corrupt senator into symmetrical chunks without ever unsheathing his saber. Or maybe Reynolds just thinks the galaxy far, far away could use a little more Deadpool & Wolverine-style sweary irreverence.
He's wrong. Push Star Wars too far into the realm of self-aware snark, or nudge it to start laughing at itself before the audience does, and you undercut the very thing that keeps fans tethered to its dusty, big-hearted mythos. We already have umpteen animated takedowns – Robot Chicken's fever-dream dismemberments, Family Guy's fart-laced remakes – and they're fine, in their way. But if Star Wars ever starts mimicking the shows that exist solely to mock it, then the circle will be complete.
Having said that, it's impossible to dismiss completely the idea of a darker, more adult take, because all the essential ingredients are already in place. There are very few kids' movies in which a father cuts off his own child's limbs, or a giant slug-monster chains a bikini-clad hostage to its throne. There are not many movies fit for a Saturday matinee that feature swamp goblins gaslighting traumatised orphans. From despair-fuelled redemption arcs to slow-burn patricide, Star Wars already has everything it needs to drop the family-friendly facade and lean fully into its dark side.
Andor, and to a lesser extent Rogue One, have already shown that it's possible to dispense with the fairytale veneer. Perhaps what Reynolds is saying is that if superhero movies can prosper by dismantling their own mythology in a blaze of sweary sarcasm, why shouldn't space-opera flicks find similar salvation in a galaxy where blood spurts with wild abandon like the Kurosawan epics that Lucas borrowed so much from in the first place.
Perhaps it's a terrible idea and would ruin everything that feels sacred about Star Wars. But just for a moment imagine it: a galaxy not full of hope but hangovers. Where Force ghosts don't offer guidance, they just hover awkwardly, muttering regrets. Where Chewbacca's fur is matted with something unspeakable and the lightsabers don't hum, they scream.

Ncuti Gatwa has left his role as the Fifteenth Doctor after two series and was seen regenerating into Billie Piper. Ncuti Gatwa has stepped down from his role as the Doctor after playing the iconic character for two seasons on the beloved sci-fi series Doctor Who. At the end of the 15th season finale, which aired on Saturday May 31, fans were left stunned as Gatwa was seen regenerating into Billie Piper, who previously played the Doctor's companion, Rose Tyler, when David Tennant was playing the iconic part. In a press release, the BBC refers to the Doctor's regeneration, but says: "Just how and why she [Billie Piper] is back remains to be seen…" Scottish-Rwandan actor Ncuti has released a statement following his shock exit which reads: "This journey has been one that I will never forget, and a role that will be part of me forever." The credit at the end of the programme read: "Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. And introducing Billie Piper". It comes after speculation had been building for some time that Gatwa was going to be 'axed' from the programme which the BBC previously denied. A spokesperson for the BBC told the media earlier this month: "Whilst we never comment on the future of the Doctor, any suggestion that Ncuti Gatwa has been 'axed' is pure fiction." As for whether the series will continue, the BBC explained: "As we have previously stated, the decision on season 3 will be made after season 2 airs and any other claims are just pure speculation. The deal with Disney+ was for 26 episodes – and we still have an entire spin off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, to air. And as for the rest, we never comment on the Doctor and future storylines." Meanwhile Billie Piper, who is set to make her shock return, first starred on the show in 2005 when it returned to television for the first time since the 1990s, appearing alongside Christopher Eccleston and then David Tennant. After her memorable role of Rose Tyler for two full series in 2005 and 2006, the 42-year-old won acclaim for roles including sex worker Belle de Jour in Secret Diary of a Call Girl and the lead character in Sky Atlantic's I Hate Suzie. In 2017, Piper won best actress award at the Olivier's, for her performance in the play Yerma. She was most recently nominated for a Bafta for playing TV producer Sam McAlister in Scoop, a drama about Prince Andrew's car crash interview on Newsnight in 2019. After Scots legend Peter Capaldi stepped down as the 12th doctor, Piper told the BBC she believed a woman should take over the coveted role but was not sure about playing the part herself. Capaldi went on to be replaced by Jodie Whittaker, who was then replaced by Sex Education star Ncuti. Gatwa has only played the Doctor for 18 months, appearing in two series, which marks the shortest amount of time any star has been in the role since Christopher Eccleston's one year stint as the Doctor in 2005. There is still uncertainty about when the show will return after it's finale for season 15 was aired tonight on May 31. Showrunner and head writer Russell T Davies previously confirmed that no official decision would be made on commissioning the next series until this series had been broadcast. The last two series of the show have been co-produced and broadcast internationally by streaming service Disney+, which has given the beloved sci-fi series a bigger budget. However, conversations about whether the BBC and Disney wish to renew that deal, or whether other options should be explored, are likely to take a while. In order for a new series to be released in 2026, production would need to get under way relatively soon.

Horrific details of deadly Pitbull attack that saw man savaged by five dogs
A SWAT team and K-9 officers sent to deal with a pack of pit bulls who fatally attacked a man were forced to back away from the animals due to how aggressive they were, a new report has revealed. Chris Culbertson, 46, died from his injuries after he was gruesomely mauled for 23 minutes last November in Kansas City, Missouri, by a pack of pit bulls. He was seen on security footage riding his bike when he was approached by two dogs who started circling him. Culbertson fell to the ground and more dogs broke through a fence, taking hold of his arms, legs, feet and face with their teeth. New documents seen by The Kansas City Star reveal that despite the presence of a SWAT team, a K-9 team and workers from a nearby animal shelter, officials still couldn't get the dogs under control after the horrific attack. Even though officers have the power to destroy dangerous dogs that pose a threat to the public, officers left the animals inside the fenced yard of their owner. The next day officers returned to find that the animals had disappeared. A patrol for the dogs didn't start until four days later, the document say. In April John Thibeaux Sr. and his son John Thibeaux Jr. were charged with one count of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and second-degree assault. Animal shelter KC Pet Project, who appeared at the address alongside the SWAT and K-9 teams, released documents to the outlet about the incident. In them, they said that officers used horns, sirens and lights to spook the animals away from Culbertson. A nearby neighbor, identified in the report as Holly Lane, ran to Culbertson's aid with a golf club but was also attacked. Eventually the animals fled back into the yard via holes in the fencing large enough for them go under. After Culbertson and Lane were rushed to hospital, an animal service officer was told by cops at the scene that Thibeaux Sr arrived with a key to the padlocked enclosure. In a probable cause statement seen by the outlet, it said he arrived on the scene shortly after the first attempt to capture the dogs, telling officers he lived there. Officials say that after being informed of the attack he then recanted his original statement and said the dogs belonged to his son. His son was then called to the address, but he then told officers that only one belonged to him, the rest were strays. Officials moved into seize the animals after a warrant was issued with the SWAT team and K-9 officers attempting to bring them under control. An officer described how they managed to put one red pit bull in a waiting truck as the other animals tried to attack them through the fencing. The document says: 'Through another attempt to gain control of another Pitbull type canine, it and another Pitbull type canine forcibly grabbed my catchpole and ripped it out of my hands and into the yard.' According to the report the SWAT team then used pepper spray on the animals which forced the animals away from the fence. They left with one dog, it said. Kansas City code states that if officials deem an animal uncatchable officials can kill it by other reasonable means outside of euthanizing it humanely if it is a continued threat. Due to the aggression of the animals, the officers left with plans to return and sedate the rest of them. The next morning the animals had all disappeared. After 300 bites, 500 stiches and 100 lacerations, Culbertson went septic and died from his injuries. Lane suffered bites to her leg, and a laceration to the back of her calf. Despite being bandaged up blood continued to pour from the wound and soak the gauze. Lane told officers that two hours before they arrived on the scene the day after that she saw the owner park at the edge of the property before leaving. She suspected that they had loaded up the animals and left before cops appeared on the scene again. John Thibeaux Jr. met with officers at the property and gave them permission to inspect it for the dogs. They found two kennels in a back bedroom with nine puppies inside. No other dogs were found. After patrols were put in place to find the loose pack, several dogs matching the description were found two miles from the property and appeared to have been abandoned. The report said that they were impounded and euthanized. Detectives later said that Thibeaux Jr operated a dog breeding business, based on social media posts concerning puppies for sale. In the last update from prosecutors, both men are in custody on a $100,000 bond each. has approached the Jackson County Prosecutor for an update on the case. It is unclear at this time if they have entered a plea.
