Lamborghini Fenomeno Preserves Analog Passion In An Electrified Era
Automobili Lamborghini is renowned for creating vehicles that stir powerful emotions through both their design and driving experience. The recent debut of the Fenomeno at Monterey Car Week 2025 proves that, despite adopting a hybrid powertrain, the Italian brand's dedication to a visceral, analog, and engaging driving experience remains undiminished. The Fenomeno, a 'few-off' limited edition (just 29 examples will be built) supercar, follows the tradition begun by the Reventón—both models were created as exclusive limited editions showcasing Lamborghini's cutting-edge design and technology. 'When we presented the Reventón in 2007, our goal was to create a truly superlative super sports car that represented the ultimate expression of what Lamborghini stood for,' says Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. 'This new few-off carries forward the same philosophy of distinction and innovation that is a fundamental part of our DNA.' Lamborghini has pushed boundaries with each previous vehicle in the series (including the Reventón, Sesto Elemento, Veneno, Centenario, Sián, and Countach). The Fenomeno continues the tradition with lightweight construction and record-breaking gasoline-electric hybrid power. While some may attempt to dismiss hybridization as a departure from driving excitement and the driver's analog connection with an automobile, Lamborghini focused its efforts on ensuring that the passion and emotion didn't get lost—they are amplified. Mid-mounted in the chassis is the most powerful V12 engine in Lamborghini's history. Three electric motors complement the massive gasoline-fed naturally-aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine—two are tasked with driving the front axle, while the third radial flux electric motor is positioned above the gearbox, to provide power to the rear wheels. The V12 revs to an astronomical 9,500 rpm and is rated at 823 hp. The electric motors add 242 horsepower—and gobs of low-end torque. Combined, total system output is 1,065 hp, which will deliver a manufacturer-claimed 0-60 mph sprint in 2.4 seconds towards a top speed more than 217 mph (most industry insiders believe those numbers are conservative). Lamborghini has refined the Fenomeno's aerodynamics to maximize efficiency, performance, and stability at high speeds to allow the driver to push the vehicle to its limits. The front splitter incorporates two air curtains that direct the air parallel to the wheels, reducing drag (and feeding cooling air to the radiators). An S-Duct system, installed on the front of the vehicle, increases the front aerodynamic load to ensure perfect vehicle dynamics during sports driving. A special 'omega' design on the rear wing further maximizes vehicle stability at high speeds. Even the newly sculpted door design plays a part—it directs airflow towards the large air intakes on the sides (the result is over 30 percent more efficient side-cooling compared to a series production Lamborghini V12). Lastly, to ensure the contact patch with the pavement—the tactile relationship with earth—is up to the task, Lamborghini fits the Fenomeno with turbine-design single-nut forged wheels (21' at the front and 22' at the rear). The alloys are wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires, sized 265/30 ZRF21 and 355/25 ZRF22. Bridgestone, a world leader in premium tires and sustainable mobility solutions, is the exclusive tire partner for the Fenomeno. 'At Lamborghini, design and performance go hand in hand—and with Bridgestone, we have a partner who understands both,' said Christian Mastro, Lamborghini's Marketing Director. 'Tires are a vital part of how a supercar performs: outside of technical updates, 70 percent of the improvements in these cars today come from advances in the tires they sit on.' The name Fenomeno proudly carries on Lamborghini's legendary tradition of naming cars after fierce and famous bulls—this one inspired by a courageous and iconic bull from Morelia, Mexico. In both Italian and Spanish, 'Fenomeno' means 'phenomenal,' perfectly capturing something truly remarkable and one-of-a-kind. And that's no exaggeration—Lamborghini has already sold out this extraordinary supercar.

Monterey Car Week: Hispano-Suiza 'torpedo' wins top honors, classic car auctions rebound, new concepts revealed
CARMEL, Calif. — This year's Monterey Car Week in Pebble Beach ended with a bang. A stunning 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C Nieuport-Astra Torpedo won top honors at Sunday's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, arguably the most prestigious classic car show in the world. The boat-like Hispano-Suiza, which features mahogany body panels held together with aluminum rivets, went through a two-year restoration using period-era wood and features nickel plating on engine parts and other components that are period correct, an RM Sotheby's spokesperson said. But this 'one-off' torpedo-shaped car wasn't the only big news coming out of Monterey. An auction rebound - with a twist The biggest auto auctioneers in the world — RM Sotheby's; Mecum; Bonhams; and the official auctioneer of Pebble Beach, Gooding & Company — were expecting a somewhat downbeat week, but the final tallies in the industry surprised. Classic car insurer Hagerty (HGTY), which also owns Broad Arrow Auctions, estimated an average of $388 million would come in across all auction houses. However, the final tally came in much higher, with sales totaling $432.8 million across four days, which could also increase as cars that didn't sell can find buyers in the next day or two. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service This year was the second-biggest Monterey show ever, only surpassed by 2022's $471.2 million total. Hagerty notes that the top sale was a special-edition 2025 Ferrari (RACE) Daytona SP3 at $26 million, which was auctioned off for charity. Without the new Ferrari, the total sales of $397.2 million would have been up only 4% from last year. 'As has been the story over the past couple of years, modern supercars set records while bidders shied away from vintage Ferraris, the Pablo Picassos of the collector car world,' Hagerty said in its report. 'Last year's faltering of the vintage Ferrari market, with a drop from an average of 84% (2021-2023) to 51% in 2024, was soothed by 65% of them selling this year. More buyers and sellers found a meeting point, but the frenzied Italian interest has moved to more modern cars.' 'Few-offs' and concepts hit the field Speaking of modern cars, from the Quail event on Friday to Pebble Beach's concept lawn on Sunday, automakers showed off their latest creations, with exclusivity being key. Some models would only be sold by the handful, while others not at all. It didn't stop high-net-worth car fanatics from inquiring about where to sign on the dotted line. 'We've had a number of customers that have already said, 'Could we buy one of those vehicles today?'' said Rory Harvey, GM (GM) executive vice president and president of global markets, about the company's two Corvette concepts, the CX and racy CX-R. Harvey, who essentially leads all GM brands globally, noted that customers were asking to buy a vehicle with no pricing info that wouldn't even be released. 'Just listening to the customers, the enthusiasts that are on the stage, I mean, the feedback is outstanding,' Harvey said. The Corvettes featured on the Quail lawn likely strongly hint at the future of Corvette, but it's something fans and buyers won't see for years. While Ferrari sold its one-of-one Daytona SP3 for charity (for an astounding price, as noted above), even its one-time rival Ford (F) got in on the action, revealing the ultimate Ford GT Mk IV, a track-only specification that would be banned at any race due to its all-out specification. The Mk comes in at a heady $1.7 million, with just 67 units made, the last versions before Ford GT production comes to an end. Lamborghini's latest creation — a 'few off,' as it calls limited vehicles — is the Fenomeno. A more extreme version of the current Revuelto V-12 powered hybrid, the Fenomeno features a more aggressive aero package and jet fighter-like cockpit. Only 29 Fenomenos will be built, likely costing around $3.5 million. They're already sold out, so disappointed shoppers will have to look to the auction market in the coming years if they want to get one. CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Yahoo Finance that 'few-off' creations are not just about expressing the brand's design ethos, or celebrating certain milestones (in this case, the 20th anniversary of the company's in-house design division). They make considerable money for the brand. The last 'few off,' the new Countach that debuted back at Monterey in 2022, was priced starting at $3.5 million with 112 units sold. Back-of-the-napkin math shows at least $280 million coming into Lamborghini's coffers after the production run ended. Lamborghini's Volkswagen (VWAGY) stablemate Bentley also showed off a concept, the EXP 15, which made its North America debut at Pebble Beach's concept lawn. 'Yes it's always — being open a little bit on the process — you show something where you know we will not sell it," Bentley CEO Frank Walliser told Yahoo Finance. "And we went with a concept where we said, 'OK, we show an outlook of how a sedan in the future could look like,' and we went in as extreme as possible a concept." The EXP 15 may be a sedan, but it is a big one, almost hulking. The big grill and brawny front of the car then levels off with a sporty fastback design — hinting at possible sporty SUV leanings. The concept offers clues about future design, but not much else. 'I know what we will see on the street, and I also know what you will not see, but I cannot tell you the details,' Walliser said with a chuckle. 'What you can see [here], there's a lot of elements that will make its way to our future street cars, for sure, if then applied to an SUV style or to a sports car type of car, it will be completely different.' For now, Bentley buyers will have to settle for the British brand's current offerings, which have all been refreshed for the current model year, featuring mostly V8 hybrid powertrains. Bentley's all-electric future, seen in visions like the EXP 15, has some years to go. Perhaps Monterey Car Week 2030 would be a good target. GM wows with Corvette, Cadillac concepts at Monterey Car Week
CARMEL, Calif – GM brought some Detroit muscle to the rarified air of Monterey Car Week — with a twist. While the Corvette nameplate falls under the Chevrolet brand, more and more it stands out on its own. At The Quail event in Carmel Valley, where multi-million dollar Paganis are displayed alongside priceless gullwing Mercedes SL coupes (and the parking lot is a show in and of itself), Corvette showed off two concepts that showed where the sportscar is headed in the future. The CX and its racing-inspired twin the CX-R, evoke supercar looks that go beyond the current 'C8' Corvette. The two concepts feature fighter jet-style interiors, with a trick canopy opening to boot. The twist — the CX is all electric, which is becoming a rarity at the higher end, and the CX-R features hybrid power. The racy CX-R will also be a drivable car in the Gran Turismo 7 racing game on PlayStation. And the response, beyond the oohs and ahhs, was strong for vehicles that aren't going on sale. 'We've had a number of customers that have already said, 'Could we buy one of those vehicles today?,'' said Rory Harvey, EVP and President of Global Markets, from the Quail Event to Yahoo Finance. Harvey, who essentially leads on all GM brands globally, noted that customers were asking to buy a vehicle with no pricing info, and wouldn't even be released. It was a good opportunity though, to collect future client info from buyers who typically own multiple cars. 'Just listening to the customers, the enthusiasts that are on the stage, I mean, the feedback is outstanding,' Harvey said. The UK-born exec noted that Corvette, in his opinion, was already at supercar levels, with competitive lap times at places like the Nurburgring in Germany, and 38% market share in the luxury sports car segment, making it the leader. Harvey's purview extends to Cadillac, where the luxury brand showed off its 'Elevated Velocity' concept, a cross-over style EV SUV meant to evoke the high-desert landscape. The new design language may hint at more curves and swooping design, as opposed to Cadillac's traditional angular features and vertical light bars. Regardless, Cadillac as a brand has been on a winning streak with its combination of traditional gas powered cars like the Escalade and CT5 sedans, and EVs like the Lyriq and Optiq. 'Cadillac now has done 12 consecutive quarters of year-on-year growth, which is absolutely superb. But in quarter two, Cadillac is now the number one luxury brand for EVs. So again, that's really, really strong,' Harvey said. 'We've launched so many new products over the course of the last two years, and that momentum continues to build. So we're looking at, how do we keep our foot on the accelerator pedal and build even further?' Harvey said he wasn't terribly concerned over the upcoming loss of the EV tax credit, because the brand would be able 'flex' into its other gas-powered offerings like the XT crossovers if its EVs were not price competitive. While a nice game plan, it doesn't address the fact the company invested heavily in EVs, and might take a hit to sales. Another challenge is tariffs, where GM took a big hit in the second quarter and stands to feel more pain in the second half of the year. Harvey noted the trade deals in place are mostly preliminary, so when the details come out the company will have a hard look at its manufacturing footprint, product portfolio in terms of territory, and where the company can minimize its tariff exposure. 'We've publicly stated that we believe that we can mitigate approximately 30% of the impact of tariffs; so, we're in a strong position at the moment,' Harvey said of GM's ability to pivot around President Trump's tariff war. Harvey still believes GM is in a great spot regardless of tariffs, and it's because of products like the current Corvette and Cadillac portfolio — cars that are selling well in the marketplace. 'If you looked at just General Motors sales in the US, we are the fastest growing brand, full stop. And if you look to the nearest competitor, they're about half the level of growth that we've got. So customers love our products.' Pras Subramanian is the lead auto reporter for Yahoo Finance. You can follow him on X and on Instagram.
