Storm Track 3 ‘Certified Most Accurate' for 7th straight year

Yahoo26-02-2025

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — For seven years in a row, the KSN Storm Track 3 team led by Chief Meteorologist Lisa Teachman has been certified as the most accurate forecast in Wichita TV and our surrounding viewing area.
'We have a dedicated team of meteorologists focused on getting the forecast right around the clock. I am incredibly proud of this hard-working crew,' KSN Chief Meteorologist Lisa Teachman said.
'The KSN Storm Track 3 meteorologists have once again proven they are on the team you can trust,' Rachel Schrag Sommerfeld, KSN news director, said. 'Kansas families have come to depend on the KSN Storm Track 3 team in all sorts of weather. They help families prepare for the day and help keep them safe during severe and dangerous weather. We are proud to have earned another year of distinction from WeatheRate.'
WeatheRate is an independent company that analyzes forecasts across the country. Every day, its analysts carefully examine forecasts in the Wichita television market. They not only study KSN Storm Track 3's forecasts but also those of the other meteorologists in the area.
The experts at WeatheRate measure how accurate the forecasts are to what happened, including high and low temperatures, cloud cover, severe storm hazards, rain, snow, strong winds, and dense fog.
Analysts also rate the timing of the predicted weather conditions each day and for four days in the future.
Based on what WeatheRate learns, the company scores the forecasts. It adds points every time the forecast is different from what happened. Lower scores indicate that the forecast is more accurate.
This past year, KSN Storm Track 3's score was the lowest, marking the highest accuracy in Wichita and our viewing area. It is the seventh year for this honor.

Storm's over, but Wichita's still dealing with the mess

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A day after torrential rains swamped parts of Wichita, the city is still drying out—and cleaning up. Flooded roads, swamped basements, and closed parks are just some of the problems left behind. At one of the worst-hit intersections, 1st and Bleckley, a woman had to be rescued from her car as water rose around her. KSN spoke with Stacy Miller, the daughter of the woman who was saved. Rose Hill man denies charges in girl's death Stacy Miller says her 80-year-old mom ended up in the floodwaters while trying to get back home from a doctor's appointment. She says she got a call from her sister that their mom was in neck-deep water, which is when she immediately hung up the phone and ran into her car. She says she was horrified. 'I just wanted to go and grab her and get her to go with me, and obviously, no one would let me do that,' Miller said. 'I understand, but your mind doesn't think that way when you see someone.' She said it felt almost like an out-of-body experience. She's grateful her mom didn't get hurt, and grateful for help from neighbors. The rain flooded more than the roads. Many basements are still dealing with standing water. One foundation repair expert says he typically gets one or two calls a day. Now, he's getting 10. 'When the soils saturate around here they swell, and then they cause these pressures, and you get cracks, and the more rain, the more pressure, the more the cracks will widen,' said Nick Trotter, owner of Chief Cornerstone Foundation. He says water leaking into a basement can be a sign of cracks in the foundation. Those can cause a house to start to collapse or sink into the ground. The flooding around Wichita forced the closure of some playgrounds. Fabrique and Sleepy Hollow parks, as well as Clapp Dog Park, are all closed. The Park and Recreation director for the city says they are trying to get parks open as soon as possible, but some things need to be replaced. 'What's more so is water getting under some surfaces, and some chips were flooding out,' said Reggie Davidson, Park and Recreation director for the City of Wichita. 'We want to make sure it's safe.' He says timing depends on how long it takes to get supplies. He adds the department is moving as fast as they can. He says Park and Recreation inspected playgrounds before closing them. They'll replace the components, then inspect the parks again before reopening. For more Kansas news, click here.
