I've found the secret to a happy relationship: an ‘airport divorce'

In the end our differences were irreconcilable. Morwenna and I had only been engaged for a couple of months, but after about a dozen holidays and a good 24 hours spent in airports together, we decided that enough was enough. If anything, the security of our forthcoming marriage had granted us the freedom to (finally) be honest with each other. No more indulging irritating habits. Out with the qualities of patience and tolerance we had flaunted while dating. So vastly different were our approaches to flying that an 'airport divorce' — that is, parting ways after passing through security and reconvening an hour or so later on the plane — felt like the optimal outcome for both of us. There were certain things we agreed upon, mostly to do with pre-flight planning. After years of time-maximising by taking early-morning and late-evening flights, we're now committed middle-of-the-day flyers. And we both reckon it's sensible to arrive a couple of hours before departure. It's when we get past the bag scanners and snake through duty free that the friction begins. 'I'm just going to have a look here,' said Morwenna in the smellies area at Alicante airport last month. I shuffled along behind her. She handled a moisturiser for a few seconds then returned it. And again. A third time. 'Are you just going to pick objects up then put them back down for half an hour?' I asked. 'Yes,' she said, 'that's what I like doing at the airport.' And that was the fateful moment we chose to part company and link up later on the plane. A British Airways survey from a couple of years ago found that more than half of travellers claim to 'adopt a new personality' within the hectic, anxiety-inducing tinderbox that is the airport. I think both Morwenna and I fall into this camp. To look at things within the framework of type A/B personality theory, in non-airport life I'd argue that, like most people, we both sit somewhere between A (organised, think time management is sexy) and B (relaxed, susceptible to being late). At the airport we transmute, werewolf-like, into unrecognisable beings. I amp up my neurotic type A side; Morwenna leans into her laid-back type B persona (all the more difficult to comprehend because in the real world she is five minutes early for everything). We are not our best, balanced selves. • 11 of the most romantic holiday destinations around the world What this means in practice is that, before the gate number is announced, I like to sit somewhere with a direct view of a departures board (if that's Wetherspoons then all the better), so I am ready to leap up and half-walk, half-run in the right direction. Morwenna, on the other hand, is well aware that the plane isn't really going to start boarding 45 minutes before departure. So she browses. And browses. Taking pleasure in her only real responsibility in that moment: being to make it onto the plane and challenging herself to be the last on board. At the gate I like to be in line relatively early, both to soothe my anxiety over missing the flight and to secure a spot for my cabin bag. Not Morwenna. Our mutual travel history is a series of episodes involving me repeating, 'Shall we get in the queue then?' and her responding '… but why?' So on that journey back from Alicante, she did her thing, I did mine. She perused the tins of olives and anchovies; I knocked back an Estrella and scanned the flight information board. I was anxious on her behalf. We gave each other nasty looks across the gate while I queued and she lounged. But aside from that … it was a much less fraught experience all round. • 10 of the most romantic city breaks in Europe Some couples say a 'sleep divorce' is the secret to a happy relationship. I'd say it's splitting up at the airport. Are you a fan of the 'airport divorce'? Let us know in the comments

But what really pulled the attention of attendees was the huge yellow gem shining on her ring finger, surrounded by smaller diamonds. The TV star has been in a relationship with former Channel Seven executive Craig McPherson since 2008. The two began their romance shortly after Sonia split from her British banker husband, James Davies. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Sonia was all smiles as she strutted her stuff down the red carpet, making sure the huge ring was on display. Her gown featured racy, full-length cutouts down both sides of her body with dangling diamante chains. Sonia kept her accessories to a minimum for TV's night of night's, opting for simple elegance as she sported stacked rings on one hand and a massive gem on the other. The Dancing With The Stars host also rocked a fresh burgundy manicure, nude lip and smoky eyes as she styled her blonde locks into loose waves. Sonia is up for a Gold Logie alongside Ally Langdon, Hamish Blake, Julia Morris, Lisa Millar, Lynne McGranger, and Poh Ling Yeow. At the ceremony, beloved rocker Jimmy Barnes is set to take to the stage at The Star, bringing four decades of fan-favourite hits to Aussie ears. Sam Pang will also host the event for the third time.

1939 vs 1975: Which was the greatest year in cinema ever?

Which was the greatest year in cinema ever? Not so long ago, the answer was obvious – the films of 1939 used to rule the world. Wistful critics and tweedy academics waxed lyrical about their unrivalled artistry. Grandparents paused their afternoons when they caught Gone With the Wind, Stagecoach or The Wizard of Oz on TV, resuming them only once the credits rolled. And then, somewhere down the line, those films disappeared. Millennials consider them unbearably antiquated and irrelevant; Gen Z thinks that Greta Garbo is an exciting young winger who plays for Real Madrid and John Wayne is probably a friend of their dad's. The right-on film studies crowd savaged these pictures for their racism, sentimentality and deference to authority. They have a new cinematic annus mirabilis: 1975. That was the year of Jaws, the first modern blockbuster, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which reinvented comedy. It was when Dog Day Afternoon and Nashville tore open the range of stories that Hollywood drama could depict, and the iconoclastic One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest won the Best Picture Oscar. The musical came back from the dead too, madder than ever, in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Who's Tommy. And cinema-goers could also find Barry Lyndon, Young Frankenstein, 3 Days of the Condor, and umpteen foreign-language masterpieces on the big screen. No wonder cinephiles adore it. In 2022, Sight and Sound magazine named 1975's brilliant but obscure drama Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles as the greatest film ever made, and last month ran a special issue on the movies released that year. On the face of it, they do seem more attuned to our cynical and irreverent age. The rebellious baby boomers who made them are now our cultural elders – the leader of Python's Knights Who Say 'Ni!' now really is Sir Michael Palin – and the world has followed their example in distrusting (and lampooning) authority. We still respond to the anti-establishment bite of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and relate to the alienated outsiders and weirdos in Python or The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Yet the largely forgotten films of 1939 have aged much better than we think. Their endearing innocence and solidity, once dismissed as naive, is a surprising relief from modern anxieties. And they're still remarkably entertaining, almost a century after they were made. So which year is the best in cinema history? I've put their greatest films head-to-head across different categories below, and you can vote for your winners in our polls. Meanwhile, if you think that there are other golden years in cinema history beyond the two I've chosen, then you can make your case in the comments section. We'll pull out the best of your responses.
