TRENDS participates in an international symposium on BRICS green development strategies

ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)TRENDS Research & Advisory took part in the BRICS Think Tank International Symposium, held in Beijing under the theme 'Green BRICS, Golden Future.'The symposium was hosted by the China Council for BRICS Think Tank Cooperation (CCBTC), and organised by the National Academy of Development and Strategy (NADS), Renmin University of China. It aimed to facilitate knowledge exchange, strengthen partnerships among BRICS think tanks, and accelerate the transition toward low-carbon economies.The event addressed key topics including green development pathways, cross-border green cooperation, green technology and standards, and sustainable market collaboration. It highlighted how BRICS countries are responding to global climate change and environmental challenges by adopting innovative green development strategies, advancing policy reforms, and enhancing international cooperation.
Pathways to Green DevelopmentAbdulla Al-Khaja, a researcher at TRENDS Research & Advisory, contributed a research paper during the first session titled 'Pathways to Green Development.' He emphasised that green development is no longer a choice between economic growth and environmental preservation, but a foundational pillar for long-term economic resilience and geopolitical stability. Al-Khaja noted that the BRICS offers unique value through diverse developmental experiences that can help shape a more inclusive global ecosystem.
UAE Energy Strategy 2050Al-Khaja highlighted that green development in the UAE has become a comprehensive strategic direction. The UAE Energy Strategy 2050 aims to increase the share of clean energy to 50% by mid-century, while reducing energy demand by 40%. These efforts align with the country's Hydrogen Strategy and the National Framework for a Circular Economy, coordinated through the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, which includes representatives from 17 ministries and agencies to ensure implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda.He pointed out that a recent milestone in this direction was the launch of a one-gigawatt renewable energy facility developed by Masdar, designed to provide sustainable clean energy. This project is not only a response to the challenges of intermittent renewable energy supply, but also a tangible demonstration that green growth is becoming a reality.
Strengthening Strategic AutonomyAl-Khaja noted that the UAE's commitment extends beyond national borders. The country's accession to BRICS in 2024 reflects a strategic vision aligned with emerging economies' efforts to reshape global governance. Despite its economic strength, the UAE recognises the importance of building alternative development and financial frameworks, deepening South-South cooperation, and reinforcing strategic autonomy amid shifting global power dynamics.He added that this vision was reflected in the BRICS+ Summit in Kazan, which underscored the importance of building partnerships and consensus in a multipolar world.A key example of such cooperation is the $2.8 billion investment agreement between Masdar and China's Silk Road Fund, aimed at deploying renewable energy solutions across Belt and Road Initiative economies.
Think Tanks and DevelopmentAl-Khaja concluded by stressing the pivotal role of BRICS think tanks in advancing green development. Through constructive dialogue, diversified knowledge partnerships, the localisation of climate technologies, and enhanced regional coordination, these institutions contribute to shaping resilient and sustainable future.
Al-Khaja underscored that green development is not just a framework for environmental sustainability: it is also a test of collective capacity to manage complexity and foster cross-border innovation.

TRENDS participates in Glacier Conservation Conference in Tajikistan
31 May 2025 10:53 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)TRENDS Research & Advisory participated in a high-level international conference on glacier conservation, which was held in Dushanbe, conference was inaugurated by Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan.A delegation from TRENDS represented the centre at the conference, led by senior researcher Abdulaziz Al Shehhi, deputy head of the research Shehhi delivered a speech on behalf of TRENDS CEO Dr. Mohammed Al Ali, in which he underscored that melting glaciers represent one of the most alarming consequences of climate change. He emphasised the urgent need to strengthen international cooperation, and reaffirm commitment to implementing global agreements, such as the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement and the landmark UAE declaration issued at Mohammed Al-Ali emphasised that transitioning to renewable energy represents a strategic response to global warming. He highlighted the need to scale up renewable energy production, and to enhance energy efficiency by 2030, in line with the targets of the COP28 Conference. The UAE as a ModelThe UAE is a pioneering model of adopting renewable energy projects. It plans to use 44% of its energy from renewable sources by 2050, with investments of up to $163 billion in solar technologies and sustainable development initiatives. Dr. Al Ali highlighted some key undertakings, such as Masdar City, the world's first carbon-emission-free city; the three largest operational solar power plants globally, with a fourth under construction; and the world's most prominent single-site solar collector. Research InstitutionsDr. Mohammed Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS, emphasised the pivotal role of research institutions in offering innovative policy recommendations, and in supporting international efforts to address climate change. UAE: VFS Global partners with Rayad Group to offer immigration advisory services in US
VFS ETM, a subsidiary of the VFS Global group, has announced a partnership with UAE-headquartered Rayad Group to provide immigration advisory services across five major US cities — Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. According to a press release issued by VFS Global, the collaboration aims to make immigration services more accessible to US residents through designated VFS Global locations. As part of the initiative, the two organisations will set up a Centre of Excellence focused on high-quality immigration advisory services. The centre will leverage advancements in generative AI and draw on top-tier legal expertise to help clients navigate complex immigration procedures and stay compliant with evolving regulations. "As global immigration frameworks become more intricate and regulatory standards rise, this partnership will provide US residents with access to a network of experienced immigration, tax, and legal professionals,' the release stated. These experts will offer customised solutions for a wide range of immigration needs. Founded in 1994, Rayad Group has an extensive global network of associate attorneys in 45 countries and affiliations with 25 Citizenship by Investment Programmes. It also specialises in pathways to permanent residency, Golden Visas, US EB-5 visa programmes, and Green Card compliance. Rayad Kamal Ayub, Managing Director of Rayad Group, said the alliance comes at a time when immigration considerations for US Green Card holders are evolving. 'The recently announced 'Gold Card' initiative has generated significant interest among ultra-high-net-worth individuals,' he said.
