Chad Michael Murray's near-death experience

Perth Now7 days ago
Chad Michael Murray was once so close to death, his family called in a priest to perform the last rites.
The 43-year-old actor revealed he spent two months in hospital as a teenager when his intestines became twisted, which led to internal bleeding and Chad lost 50 per cent of his blood leaving him on his 'deathbed'.
Speaking on the Great Company podcast, Chad said: 'I was in hospital for two and a half months. It was a lot. [I was] in and out of consciousness.
'We had surgery. I had internal bleeding, I lost 50 per cent of my blood. I was on my deathbed.
'I just remember seeing my father, the weakest I'd ever seen him, and a priest at the end of my bed. They're talking about last rites and all that stuff, and [the nurse, Sandy] gave me a blood transfusion to save my life. It saved my life.'
Chad didn't reveal his exact diagnosis but explained he had to have a second surgery to 'clean up' his internal organs.
He explained: 'Regardless, you're in there for two months and, you know, my organs shut down because you have blood all coagulated around them, and they had to wait till everything [healed more]. So, anyway, I had to have a second surgery to clean everything up.
'I went from, like, 180 to 118 pounds. I was a skeleton when I got out. I remember looking in the mirror the first time going, 'Who is that?' Like, I cried. I couldn't believe that I was looking back at that guy.'
Despite his terrifying ordeal, Chad credits his hospital stay with helping his break into Hollywood, after one of his nurses, a model named Alana, encouraged him to take up modelling.
He said: 'Alana says to me, 'Oh gosh, you should model'. I was like, 'I don't want to model. I want to be an actor. Like, I love film and television. I want to give this gift to other people.' And she's like, 'Well, you can segue from modelling into acting. Look, when you get out, I'm hooking you up with this modelling company I know.' And she meant it.'
And, Chad credits his illness with bringing him and his father closer together.
He said: 'I started my relationship with God, and my relationship with my father became really close. My dad [was] raising five kids on his own [and] came to the hospital every single day, and he spent countless nights with me when he had four more kids at home.'

Recognise Chad? Reality star's X-rated former life in Perth

If you're a product of Perth's 90s club scene and have been watching Seven's new reality series Stranded On Honeymoon Island, there's a fair chance you've already been mesmerised by charming Chad's torso on a night out. The TV star — who runs an Orthopaedic surgery in Melbourne — has been navigating the show's drama-infested waters as he attempts to forge a romantic relationship with his new wife, Georgia. But thirty years before flexing his pecs on screen, the confident 47-year-old worked as a stripper at Northbridge's James St Nightclub while studying nursing at Curtin University. Georgia and Chad. During a night out with rugby mates, he was urged to get his kit off on stage in a bid to win a $100 bar card. His impressive performance won him free drinks for the evening, and caught the eye of the club's owner, who offered him a regular gig as a 'G-string waiter'. Do you think I should do it?' And they went, 'No, don't Chad, don't be a stripper!' he said. Somewhat surprisingly, Chad's mother was much more open to his new vocation and even helped him craft creative outfits to wear for each show. 'My mum and I would go on an adventure, go to the store and pick out materials and patterns, and then we would sew these costumes together,' he added. 'She was very supportive in that sense, and I did it more so for the showman outlet and in terms of entertainment.' Chad revealed a part of his former self to wife Georgia. Credit: Seven Network Following his studies, the performer relocated to Melbourne to be closer to his mother, and his sister, who was born with special needs when he was 11. However, leaning further into his charm and physique, the eligible bachelor soon landed a spot on the romantic 2004 reality series Playing it Straight. Shifting focus to his career as an arthroplasty expert in the years since, the unlucky-in-love single has found his way back to TV in search of love again. Georgie and Chad get cosier. 'You're spending every day together, not only spending every day, but you're stressed, in the sense that you're literally without any of your creature comforts,' he said. 'So when she's having a bad hair day, we never had a mirror. We didn't know what each other looked like, so all that stuff you're navigating through, I feel like that was a powerful answer to the emotions.' To keep up with Chad and Georgia's island romance, watch Stranded on Honeymoon Island on Tuesday, July 22 on 7 and 7plus.

Haim rocker Alana reveals how pre-gig ritual has changed in her 30s

Haim's Alana now has to stretch before every concert because her joints are starting to ache now she's in her 30s. The American rock band - comprised of sisters Alana Haim, Este Haim and Danielle Haim - have built a reputation as a ferocious live band and Alana, 33, has now revealed that her pre-gig ritual has had to change from when they started out as teenagers because she has to limber up to ensure she isn't in pain after coming off stage. Discussing how Haim have no intention of slowing down in the wake of the release of their fourth album I Quit, she said: "It feels like we have so much more to accomplish, this doesn't feel like anything other than a beginning again. 'All of us still feel like we're 16, and nothing gets old. Actually, the only thing I have to do now is stretch before a show. That's new, I've got to give a little stretch, because, the joints…' Haim played a secret set at the Glastonbury Festival last weekend which earned them rave reviews, and they are heading out on their I Quit Tour this September. The If I Could Change Your Mind hitmakers believe their live shows are unparalleled because they still have the mentality of a support band who want to "win the crowd over". In an interview with the July edition of Music Week, singer-and-guitarist Danielle said: "We started our band, playing in LA, opening up for our friends and for the first five years, we just played any gig we could. "We continued to open up for some of our favourite bands and it kind of feels like we've opened up for everyone, but that's it, every time we go on stage, even when we're headlining, we have opener mentality. We always want to win the crowd over. We always want everyone leaving our show feeling, 'wow, you know, Haim gave it their all.' We take it very seriously. We go up on that stage to give our fans the best show ever.' Guitarist-and-vocalist Alana won't let anyone hug her after a concert because she is always drenched in sweat due to the energy she expends playing. She said: "With the I Quit tour, we want people to leave and just feel extremely energised. "We really do give it our all. I mean, we are a puddle of sweat. If anyone tries to hug me after a show, I'm like, 'Please don't. I smell and this is not okay!' 'We're a live band. We love being in the studio, but from the very beginning, we've always considered ourselves a live band. That's where that's where the magic happens for us.'
