Why 'Superman's' Rotten Tomatoes Score Dropped 8 Points After Debut
Currently, as of Saturday, July 12, Superman is sitting with an 82 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. If that seems lower than you heard initially, don't worry, you're not under some kind of kryptonite spell; Superman's critical rating has dropped a full eight points since the initial "official" reveal of the movie's RT score. So, how could a movie with a score of 90 suddenly, in just a few days, drop down to 82?The short answer is twofold: More critics have reviewed the movie, and the movie has been out longer. Something casual moviegoers should never forget is that Rotten Tomatoes generally does their big score reveals before the majority of audiences have even seen a movie. This also means that some critics haven't posted their reviews yet, as there's a good amount of serious movies, folks who like to post their reviews around the time the average moviegoer can see the film, too.
So, Superman dipped 8 points because there was a significant number of reviewers who broke with the crowd and gave the film a lukewarm or negative review. (Here at Men's Journal, we felt very mixed about it.) Writing for The Ringer, in a review posted on July 11, Adam Nayman probably summed up the negative Superman reviews best when he wrote: "Gunn is trying to tear something down and build it up at the same time."
Most negative reviews of Superman come from critics who wanted to love the movie, but who felt that the movie was simply too overstuffed and rushed to be considered perfect.
And so, while the audience score is soaring at 93 percent, the critical score is now a more modest 82. Whether or not this movie deserves all the hype is probably a healthy debate, and one that Superman would almost certainly approve. Why 'Superman's' Rotten Tomatoes Score Dropped 8 Points After Debut first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 13, 2025

South Park's season 27 premiere delayed amid "shitshow" Paramount merger
Paramount's pending merger with Skydance is the biggest story in the media business right now, which really means it's a little part of a lot of different stories. Today, Paramount settled its ongoing dispute with Donald Trump over 60 Minutes for $16 million, clearing the way for potential FCC approval of the critical deal. Now, South Park's season 27 premiere has been delayed. And, wouldn't you know it, it's also due to the 'shitshow' merger that's 'fucking up South Park,' in the words of its creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. But hey, at least the board is probably having a pretty good day. There are a whole lot of messy dealings behind Parker and Stone's statement. In 2019, Paramount sold the lucrative streaming rights to South Park, which it co-owns with Parker and Stone's South Park Digital Studios, to Warner Bros. Discovery. Then it decided it wanted them back for Paramount+, kicking off a whole clusterfuck of negotiations. A significant recent update came last week, when Parker and Stone's Park County entertainment company threatened legal action against RedBird Capital executive Jeff Shell, who would become president of Paramount Global if—you guessed it—the merger goes through. (It always comes back to that damn merger.) Parker and Stone are accusing Shell of tampering with their contract negotiations with WBD and Netflix. According to a letter obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Shell asked potential bidders for South Park to modify their offers in a 'manner calculated to benefit Paramount at the expense' of Park County. Shell allegedly urged WBD to give Paramount+ a 12-month exclusivity window on new episodes, and to cut its deal from 10 years to five in the hopes of bringing down its bid. (The show's previous exclusive streaming license with HBO Max expired a week ago, per Deadline.) The letter urges Shell, RedBird, and Skydance to 'immediately cease [their] interference.' Meanwhile, Skydance maintains that it has the 'right to approve material contracts.' The whole thing is a disaster, but it's not the end of South Park. Season 27 will now premiere July 23, just a few weeks later than its originally slated July 9 date, pending future delays of course. In the meantime, you can still stream seasons one through 26 on HBO Max as part of an extension granted during renewal negotiations, per Deadline. 'We are at the studio working on new episodes and we hope the fans get to see them somehow,' Parker and Stone wrote in their statement. You can watch a teaser for the season below: More from A.V. 'Superman' director James Gunn addresses 'Superwoke' backlash for his movie
"Superman" director James Gunn remarked on Friday that he'd want to see what's considered "woke" in his movie after facing backlash for some of his comments on the film. "I've heard people say it was woke, and then I've heard a lot of people say it's not," Gunn told Entertainment Weekly. "I am curious as to what in the movie is considered woke." Gunn recalled the original interview for the "London newspaper" The Sunday Times when he said that "Superman is the story of America," describing it as "an immigrant that came from other places and populated the country." Gunn said that the reporter was the one who first remarked that Superman co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were the sons of immigrants and that the character was written as an immigrant story. "I said, yeah, it's a story about an immigrant, but mostly it's a story to me about kindness, which it is. That's the center of the movie for me," Gunn said. He added, "That's the thing we can all act upon, is kindness. And so what does that lead to? Well, does that lead to the way you vote? Sure. Does that lead to everything? Yeah. Does it lead to how many people are dying from road rage? Yes. All those things are affected if people just start to value kindness. I mean, people did value kindness in the past. That was an American value, was kindness, and it doesn't necessarily seem to be that way to me anymore. So that was always the center of the movie for me, and it wasn't about anything other than that." The character, first introduced in 1938, was born from the imagination of writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster in Cleveland, Ohio. In the comics, Superman is the sole survivor of the planet Krypton, sent to Earth by his parents as their world faced destruction. Gunn faced backlash for his original comments, which were made just days before his "Superman" movie was released on July 11 and at the height of national discussion on the ongoing immigration raids throughout the country. In the same interview with The Sunday Times, he emphasized that his movie was about politics but that it was mostly about kindness and morality. "And obviously, there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them," Gunn remarked.

'Today' Show Host Made Telling Admission Before Divorce Announcement
Dylan Dreyer is known for her role as a host on NBC's "Today," but the meteorologist has been in the news herself after a significant announcement about her personal life. Last week, Dreyer announced that she and her husband Brian Fichera have split after nearly 13 years of being married. "For many years I have shared my family with you all — the highs and lows. The ups and downs. And all of the blessings and beautiful memories in between," she said on Instagram. "I am incredibly grateful for the support and love you've given me through it all. For that reason, I want to share with you that a few months ago, Brian and I made the decision to separate." Dreyer's announcement came as a surprise to some, but comments years ago suggest that the split may have been brewing for longer than anticipated. In a 2022 interview, Dreyer noted that she and her husband communicated mostly through text because of how busy their schedules and jobs were. Fichera is a former NBC cameraman. 'Our schedules mean we don't see each other much, but we text all the time,' Dreyer told 'Sometimes it's even easier to have an important or deep conversation via text because we get all our thoughts out without being interrupted.' At the time, Dreyer noted that she and Fichera felt that they could anticipate the other person's tone or intention through text. 'We don't find it impersonal. In fact, just the opposite,' the host said. 'We know each other well enough to understand each other's tone so a lot gets accomplished through texting!' In her divorce announcement, Dreyer said that she and Fichera intend to focus on co-parenting their three sons "with nothing but love and respect for another." The meteorologist added that she and her husband began as friends, and that they'll continue to be friends despite the end of their marriage. Despite the impending divorce announcement, they appeared together last week at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament. Dreyer played in the event and Fichera served as her caddy, and she posted several photos from the event.
