Ludhiana: Only a regional party can solve Punjab's issues, says Sukhbir
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday appealed to the people of Ludhiana West assembly constituency to strengthen the regional party to pave the way for overall development as well as peace and communal harmony in Punjab.
Campaigning for party candidate Parupkar Singh Ghumman in the Ludhiana West assembly constituency, Sukhbir Badal said 'Only a regional party can fulfil the aspirations of Punjabis and resolve pending issues besides providing people centric governance. Parties from Delhi only seek to exploit Punjab.'
Taking aim at the present Aam Aadmi Party government as well as the previous Congress one, Sukhbir said, 'These governments have acted like the erstwhile East India Company. They have both looted Punjab to fill the coffers of their Delhi leadership.'
He added, 'The law and order situation is such that businessmen are opting to invest in other states now. Extortions and targeted killings have become the norm.'
Asking the people to compare this with SAD rule, Sukhbir Badal said 'Our guiding philosophy is 'Sarbat Da Bhala'. We value and respect each community.'
Sukhbir Badal also spoke on how the SAD had a proven track record of undertaking record development. 'See you around. All development projects be it thermal plants, airports or expressways - they have all come up during SAD governments.'
Compare progress before casting vote: Majithia
Senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia on Thursday appealed to the electorate of Ludhiana West assembly constituency to measure the performance of the AAP-led state government with the erstwhile SAD government while casting their votes for the Ludhiana West byelection.
Majithia said 'Please see all development work around you. All development work in Ludhiana city including the elevated road, Southern Bypass, sewerage works and modern policing infrastructure including CCTV coverage of the entire city has been achieved by the erstwhile SAD government. Neither the Congress or the AAP governments have a single project to their credit. There is no reason to vote for either of these parties who have only exploited you whereas the SAD has always worked for your welfare.'
Asserting that the AAP government could not ask for more time to deliver results, Majithia said 'It is already three and a half years since the government took over the reins of power. If they have failed to deliver anything till now they cannot be expected to do anything in the next one and a half years'.
Stating that Punjab was suffering due to the complete surrender to Delhi by chief minister Bhagwant Mann, the SAD leader said 'Ludhiana has also suffered due to this. Industry is most affected with no new investment coming into the State even as home grown industrialists are shifting to other States due to the culture of extortions and targeted killings.'

Focus on Caste Census demand: Congress to launch month-long OBC outreach campaign in UP today
In a bid to woo the Other Backward Classes (OBC) in Uttar Pradesh, particularly the Most Backward Classes (MBCs) such as the Nishad community, and to press for a caste-based census, the Congress will on Saturday launch a month-long outreach campaign across the state. Titled Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan: Jatigat Jangarna, Haq Hai Hamara, the campaign will kick off on Saturday, with All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Avinash Pande inaugurating the programme in Lucknow. Pande arrived in the state capital on Friday night and will camp in the city till June 19 to oversee the party's ongoing reorganisation efforts in Uttar Pradesh. Congress leaders said the campaign, scheduled from June 14 to July 14, will include extensive awareness drives in both rural and urban areas. Activities will feature the Bhagidari Nyay Padyatra at district headquarters, a 14-day outreach to college and university students, and discussions on key issues. The issues on the agenda are alleged misuse of the 'Not Found Suitable' (NFS) tag in admissions, growing interference of student unions in universities, the deteriorating state of education and employment in the state, and the party's ongoing membership drive. Additionally, the Congress will launch a village-level 'Chaupal' campaign, focusing on the demand for a caste-based census, an economic survey, and the push to raise the reservation cap beyond 50 per cent. The party also plans to spotlight the alleged rise in contractual government appointments and will run targeted campaigns in Nishad-dominated regions, demanding the introduction of a River Rights Law for the community. Meanwhile, Pande will conduct zonal review meetings during his six-day stay in Lucknow. Justice Varma row: Congress seeks SC-appointed panel's report to decide its stand on impeachment proposal
The government has indicated that it plans to bring an impeachment motion against Justice Varma during the monsoon session of Parliament which is slated to begin on 21 July. Congress sources told ThePrint that the party conveyed to the government that access to the committee's report was essential to determine its position on the proposed impeachment of Justice Varma, who is currently posted at the Allahabad High Court but has not been assigned any judicial work. New Delhi: The Congress has asked the Centre for the report of the Supreme Court-appointed committee investigating allegations of corruption against Justice Yashwant Varma. The Union government has informed the party of its decision to initiate impeachment proceedings against the judge, sources said Friday. On 14 March, wads of currency notes were discovered in a room at Justice Varma's official residence in New Delhi, while he was serving as a judge at the Delhi High Court. The incident sent shockwaves through judicial and political circles. Justice Varma was subsequently repatriated to the Allahabad High Court by the Supreme Court Collegium and has rejected the allegations against him in response to probes undertaken by the Delhi High Court chief justice and the SC committee. While the Congress has formally demanded the inquiry report of the SC committee, some of its legal brains have argued that the report of the panel could not be the sole basis to impeach the judge. The committee, set up by former Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna, comprised the chief justices of Punjab and Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice GS Sandhawalia respectively, and Karnataka High court judge Justice Anu Sivaraman. The committee submitted its report on 3 May. On 8 May, days before his retirement, Justice Khanna wrote to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, enclosing a copy of the inquiry report and Justice Varma's response. Congress sources said that the party is consulting legal experts on the need to get the government to follow the Judges (Inquiry) Act of 1968 which kicks in once a motion to remove a judge is admitted in any of the chambers of Parliament. Under the Act, the Speaker or the Chairman, as the case may be, will constitute a three-member committee to investigate the grounds on which the removal (impeachment) has been sought. The committee consists of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) or a Supreme Court judge, the Chief Justice of one of the 25 high courts and a 'distinguished jurist'. In a public statement Wednesday, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha also questioned the unavailability of the three-member SC committee report with MPs. 'Chairman Rajya Sabha, an eminent SC lawyer, is on record saying that the three judge inquiry report has no constitutional or legal sanctity. It's conducted for the benefit of CJI & SC judges. Not a legal material for parliamentarians to move a motion! Is the government short of legal advice?' Tankha asked. Earlier, when Dhankhar sought to make a case for the revival of the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) citing the Justice Varma episode, the Congress had indicated that it was open to the idea of changes in the judicial appointments process. 'The recent incident of recovery of cash from the residence of a judge is indeed alarming. While the Congress Party recognises that an independent judiciary is intrinsic to protection of Constitutional principles and democracy, it is also true that Judiciary must set safeguards and standards for accountability. A mechanism for judicial accountability, without compromising judicial independence, is the need of the hour,' stated a resolution adopted by the All India Congress Committee at its session in Ahmedabad in April.
