Rijiju highlights border connectivity, urges public cooperation in Frontier Highway project
Addressing the gathering, Minister Rijiju stated that the government is committed to transforming the state's connectivity landscape, asserting that 'development cannot happen without proper road connectivity'.
'Gone are the days when travelling to the state capital from places like Nafra, Seppa, or Koloriang took an entire day or more. Today, with improved infrastructure, Itanagar is just a few hours away. Ensuring road connectivity for our people was my dream and commitment,' he said.
He also urged the public to support ongoing development efforts and refrain from creating hurdles in project implementation.
'We must welcome such initiatives wholeheartedly,' he added, while appealing to compensation recipients to use the funds responsibly for the benefit of their families.
Rijiju also highlighted ongoing works under the Vibrant Villages Programme, aimed at enhancing infrastructure in remote and border areas.
Local MLA Dongru Siongju expressed his sincere gratitude to the Union Government for bringing the ambitious Frontier Highway project to the region, terming it a historic move towards inclusive development.
The programme was attended by key officials including Bichom district Deputy Commissioner Bopai Puriok and West Kameng counterpart Rinchin Leta, Bichom SP Pawan Yadav, ADC L W Bapu, ZPC Mije Degio, HoDs, PRI leaders, former MLA Rinchin Kharu Rijiju, GBs, senior leaders, and general public.

Sabarmati most polluted river stretch in state
Gandhinagar: Thirteen stretches of rivers in Gujarat have been officially classified as polluted, with the Sabarmati emerging as the most contaminated, according to data tabled by the Union govt in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. The assessment is based on biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) — a key indicator of water pollution. BOD measures the amount of oxygen consumed by microorganisms to break down organic matter in water. A higher BOD implies more organic waste, which reduces oxygen levels and endangers aquatic life. Quoting a 2022 report, the Union govt said in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha that 13 stretches of rivers in Gujarat have been identified as polluted. Of these, six are categorized as Priority I (worst polluted), one each as Priority-II, III and IV, while four stretches have been categorized as Priority-V (least polluted). However, the number of polluted stretches of rivers has decreased from 20 in 2018 to 13 in 2022. He also sought details of the primary sources of pollution in Gujarat's rivers and the specific initiatives undertaken by the government to clean and rejuvenate polluted rivers. In his question in the Lok Sabha, the MP sought details of financial allocation made for river cleaning projects in Gujarat, the actual expenditure incurred during the last five years and what long-term policies have been formulated to check and prevent further river pollution and ensure sustainable water resources keeping in view the rapid urbanization and industrialization in the state. In a written reply, union minister of state for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Choudhary said rivers in the country are polluted mainly due to discharge of untreated or partially treated sewage from cities and towns and industrial effluents in their respective catchments, dumping of solid wastes, agricultural run-off, problems in operation and maintenance of sewage or effluent treatment plants, lack of dilution and other non-point sources of pollution. "Rapid urbanization and industrialization have compounded the challenges. It is the primary responsibility of states and local bodies to ensure required treatment of sewage and industrial effluents, before discharging into recipient waterbodies or land for prevention and control of pollution," the minister said in the written reply. Providing information on the measures to prevent pollution of rivers in Gujarat, the minister said in his reply that pollution abatement schemes for conservation of Sabarmati, Tapi and Mindhola rivers were sanctioned at a total cost of Rs 1,875.29 crore and sewage treatment capacity of 697 million litres per day (MLD) was created.

HC quashes Centre's order denying passport to stateless woman
1 2 Madurai: Quashing an order passed by the Centre denying an Indian passport to a stateless person born to Sri Lankan Tamil refugee parents in India, Madras high court has directed the authorities to reconsider the application seeking a passport. The court was hearing the petition filed by Harinaa, who was born in Karur district in 2002. Her parents, who are Sri Lankan nationals, were residing in a Sri Lankan rehabilitation camp in Karur district. The petitioner completed her education in India, and wanted to travel abroad. The petitioner stated that in 2023, the court directed the Centre to consider her application. Pursuant to the order, she applied for a fresh travel document. However, her request was not acceded to. Challenging it, she filed the petition seeking a direction to the Centre to issue a passport considering her application in terms of Section 20 of The Passports Act, 1967. The Centre submitted that the petitioner is neither a citizen of India nor entitled to a travel document under Section 20 of The Passports Act, 1967. Harinaa's counsel submitted that since the petitioner was born in India and has not registered as a Sri Lankan citizen or as a national of Sri Lanka, there is no question of obtaining a one-way passport. Justice C Saravanan observed that there are overwhelming records available to indicate that the petitioner was born in India. She was also issued a birth certificate in 2022 by the executive officer, Thanthoni town panchayat in Karur district. She has also been issued an Aadhaar card. The judge observed that the order passed by the authorities was based on internal discussions within the department and has not taken into consideration all these aspects. Hence, the judge quashed the order passed by the Union ministry of external affairs and remitted the matter back to the ministry to reconsider the same, after obtaining a fresh report from the police. In case the petitioner's application is rejected again, all materials and information relied upon by the authorities to reject the application shall be furnished to the petitioner, so as to enable her to make out her case. The entire exercise shall be completed in three months, the judge directed and disposed of the petition.
